To ask if you've had the heating on yet?

I had mine on for an hour yesterday to "test it out", as we'd just moved in the summer, not used it yet and had the boiler serviced. Even that made me feel a bit guilty, but it felt good as yesterday was a chilly one! I've never really felt that guilty about having the heating on, at least not before this year's price shit show.

I know hardcore MN will be holding out until November...

YABU No, I've not switched my heating on
YANBU Yep, I've embraced the toasty money pit!

Yes, we had it on for an hour in the afternoon to take the chill off. We're in central Scotland. The thermometer was saying it was about 15.5, and that hour of heating was enough to make the house feel more comfortable for the rest of the day. I'm not sure if we'll need it today, it feels a little warmer and brighter outside, house is sitting at 16.5 and the sun should warm it as the day goes on.

Thesearmsofmine · 29/09/2022 10:41

No but I would have liked to have it in as it’s been very chilly this week. Looking forward to a miserable winter with very sparing use of the heating as we just can’t afford the huge increase.

AgentJohnson · 29/09/2022 10:43

My living room is 19 degrees and the bedrooms are 20.5 degrees with the heating. However, the day before yesterday was quite chilly but I know if I turn the heating on, I won’t turn it off. So I’m holding out for 15 October.

There'll be no heating in my house all winter this year, so I'm enjoying the slight chill because this is the good bit.

Is that because of the rise in costs? It's dreadful that's what it's coming to. I had it on minimally last year, and found my oodie was a great investment - definitely saved me more in electricity than it cost. It'll probably be similar for me this year - the £400 is making me less concerned about having the heating on when I really need it.

warofthemonstertrucks · 29/09/2022 10:47

For an hour or so last night and once the other morning. Huddled under blankets the Rest of the time

PuggyMum · 29/09/2022 10:48

Not yet. Although it kicked in when the temp dropped so we changed the settings.

I would normally have it on now. But despite being cold it's sunny so I'm layering up and have my feet on a hot water bottle!

I've got the bedroom windows open today for an airing!

Wnikat · 29/09/2022 10:50

No but I am wrapped in the heated throw that Mumsnet told me to get in August. Thanks guys!

SlovenlyUnwedMother · 29/09/2022 11:00

Not yet but I would if I wasn't so worried about the cost. We're on the North East coast and it's been wet and cold all week. It's been 14.5 in the house in the morning but we've managed with extra layers so far and it looks like it's warming up a bit now anyway. I'm hoping we can at least get through October before we really need to turn it on.

CaptainCarp · 29/09/2022 11:18

Yes last few mornings, as I've got a 3 month old & can't have it too cold.
Thermostat was reading 16 degrees upstairs & its at least 1 degree if not 2 colder downstairs.
Baby has picked up a cold from DP & I don't want them getting worse.

If it was just me I'd have held off but its only been on a max of 2hrs days each morning & then house has been warm all day.
Managed to get DPs uniform dry on the line yesterday thankfully. All good saying washing will dry eventually but when DPs workwear takes at least 24hrs with the heating on baby & I would have no clean clothes all winter! 😂
(work uniform has to be washed after every wear due to his job)

littlepeas · 29/09/2022 11:24

Not yet but think it's imminent. We had our log burner on a couple of nights ago. Just checked the Hive app and our house is apparently 16.5 degrees at the moment - I am in a jumper but am comfortable enough. I do think I prefer it cooler though - I really hated the hot weather over the summer.

ditalini · 29/09/2022 11:30

No. Storage heaters here so realistically it's all or nothing. We're in a fairly well insulated modernish flat with neighbours above/below/both sides so can hang on longer than if we were in a different property.

I aim for November but won't make my family a martyr to an arbitrary date - any time after now feels like money saved.

Mistletoewench · 29/09/2022 11:35

Yes we’ve had it on for an hour here or there. My Guinea pig was looking very cold and huddled up, so felt sorry for him. Husband looked huddle up as well, but didn’t feel sorry for him in the least, he’s always fiddling with the thermostat anyway, so he can freeze..

CoralBells · 29/09/2022 11:37

I have it on for an hour in the morning so dd is warm when she gets up, although at a lower temp than in the past. Might change that to 30 mins. It also comes on when she gets home. Again 1 degree lower. We've got hoody blankets and blankets

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 29/09/2022 11:38

Just in our sons room. We're in Scotland and it has been very cold

clowerina · 29/09/2022 11:41

heated throw yes, oodies yes, heating no. just fitting some of those cellular blinds to try to reduce heat loss! meant to be really good.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/09/2022 11:41

Yes. The heating was on and off for an hour and a half in total yesterday.

sanityisamyth · 29/09/2022 11:42

Nope. Electric heaters only, which quadrupled my electric bill 2 years ago so haven't used them since.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 29/09/2022 11:45

Yes, every evening for the last couple of weeks. Without it I can’t get washing dry and I’m recovering from covid and it’s affecting my chest if I’m too cold. I’m not being wasteful but nor am I suffering. I’d rather cut back in other areas than be cold.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 29/09/2022 11:45

YABVVVU to post ANOTHER bloody thread asking if people have put the heating on yet! Hmm

Allthingsbrightandbeautifulx · 29/09/2022 11:49

Yes, had mine on for the last 3 days. Timer is set to come on at 6:30am for an hour - half an hour before DD wakes up so she’s not cold getting ready for school. Also at 3pm for an hour ready for after school. Will try to stick to this for as long as possible Nov - early Dec. Then Dec/Jan get prepared for the big freeze 🥶
Heres hoping for a mild winter 🙏🏼

Montana1612 · 29/09/2022 11:52

Not yet but we have the electric blanket on when we get into bed for a couple of hours. We’ve been wearing jumpers, dressing gowns and slippers in the evenings. Once it gets down to 15 degrees in the living room it will be going on for 2-3 hours per day

user1471462428 · 29/09/2022 12:06

No we are going to see whether we can reduce our gas consumption to November, December and January. Currently trying to shower at work to save money.

Sadless · 29/09/2022 12:07

Not yet usually would have had it on by now especially last few mornings been really cold. Holding on as long as possible but will have to go on sooner or later. Received the letter from energy company yesterday saying my bill a year should increase by about £344 a year or £6 a week on average usage. Which doesn't sound that bad. But I used £161 on electricity in August on smart meter so need to get that reduced some how it's ridiculous.

Grumpybutfunny · 29/09/2022 12:14

Heating has been on but we had our first fire last night and it warmed the whole house. Think we will be using it more

Ringmaster27 · 29/09/2022 12:19

I’m holding off as long as I can.
Ive recently got the kids fleece bedding which is on their beds now, we’ve all been changing into onesies/fleecy pjs when we get home from work and school, and getting blankets out if we need them.
I nearly caved this morning though - was a very cold one!!!
