To ask if you've had the heating on yet?

I had mine on for an hour yesterday to "test it out", as we'd just moved in the summer, not used it yet and had the boiler serviced. Even that made me feel a bit guilty, but it felt good as yesterday was a chilly one! I've never really felt that guilty about having the heating on, at least not before this year's price shit show.

I know hardcore MN will be holding out until November...

YABU No, I've not switched my heating on
YANBU Yep, I've embraced the toasty money pit!

Sadly yes. We have ca

Icedlatteplease · 29/09/2022 09:28

Sadly yes. We have carers who feel the cold hugely.

And the cats were shivering

FluSue · 29/09/2022 09:28

Not yet, but I was sorely tempted this morning when I got up to bathroom towels that were still damp from the night before because it had been so cold overnight! I can't believe the change in the weather in the space of a few weeks- it seems more pronounced than ever this year. I've been trying to hang on until October; although I've been using electric blankets on the bed and electric throws on the sofa for a good fortnight or so. We're in the SE, but in a fairly rural, exposed location.

XmasElf10 · 29/09/2022 09:29

It's come on at 5am for an hour once or twice this week (it's on a thermostat). It's not on during the day (I wfh) or in the evening yet. I have burned a couple of logs on the fire already though!

GOODCAT · 29/09/2022 09:30

No, not yet. In the south and old house but not cold enough yet. We have now put warmer duvets on bed and I have a blanket on my legs sometimes in the evening.

The cat is getting chilly though so doing a heat pad for her when we are out during the day.

thisisscary · 29/09/2022 09:52

It's cold up here so I've put it on timer today. Max temp is 19 though and it will just be for a few hours a day. When it's just me in the house I'll have it turned off. It was 15 degrees in the house yesterday and raining outside so DC came home from school soaked through. DC has health needs and apparently at under 16 degrees you are more at risk of infections etc. so I can't risk it. I am worried about paying for it, but I'd rather have debt than another hospital visit.

emmathedilemma · 29/09/2022 09:54

Another fellow Scotland dweller with the heating on! I put it on for a couple of hours earlier in the week but yesterday morning I switched it to be on the timer for 2hrs morning and evening. It's looking a bit milder next week so might be able to take it off but there's no way I can sit around in 15 degrees!

Talia99 · 29/09/2022 10:00

Not yet - 19 inside. I run a dehumidifier in the en suite when showering which also warms the bathroom though.

MikeWozniaksMoustache · 29/09/2022 10:01

What plans do people have about getting washing dried if heating not on
Washing still dries just slower. Airflow is the most important thing for drying clothes, so as long as they’re not too bunched up they will dry: a dehumidifier really helps and doesn’t cost much to run.

kikisparks · 29/09/2022 10:03

Yeah 3 times for an hour just to get the bedroom to 18 for the baby. We put up with 13-15 indoors during the day and just wrap warmly. If it wasn’t for DD we’d probably not have used it yet.

kikisparks · 29/09/2022 10:08

Our energy bill for a small terraced house is estimated at £450 per month on the new tariff after we put our metre readings in, crazy. So we’ll need to be really careful but can’t have baby being too cold at night.

girlfriend44 · 29/09/2022 10:19

Had the fire on for an hour or so early evening to warm the room then it went off.

FGSWhatNow · 29/09/2022 10:24

To me, it's sort of an irrelevant question, as evidenced by the huge variety of answers. You get people saying "absolutely not", then they clarify that they live in a well-insulated new build down south somewhere, where the internal temperature never drops below 20° even when the heating's off. Then another will come on and say "of course it's on!", before revealing that they're in a draughty, victorian house that barely reaches 20° even with the radiators set to max. Not to mention the differences in people - someone wfh, sitting at a desk all day will feel the cold more than someone who's on the go all day. You just can't compare!

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/09/2022 10:24

Yes, the last couple of evenings, because the temp in the house went below 18c. Honestly, some of you are absolutely bonkers. Only put it on low, but it clicked on a few times in the evening. We have stats on all the radiators, so not all are on though, and the difference an hour of so of heating makes to the core of the house is tangible. It's still 18.6 now, so nice and constant, even though heating not been on since 9.30 last night.

ZimZamZoom · 29/09/2022 10:24

We are in the South East in a well-insulated New Build. We had the heating on two evenings this week but only for about 15 minutes, more to check the boiler and all the rads are in working order.
The thermostats are saying its around 19 on the ground floor, 20 on the first floor and 20.5 on the top floor atm.
We haven't done a full winter here yet (moved in in Feb).

DailyMailHater · 29/09/2022 10:28

We hadn’t consciously turned it on, but when I woke up this morning it was on, it had come on automatically as the temp had dropped below what we had set the thermostat to last winter - so last night must have been a cold one.

TheOrigRights · 29/09/2022 10:28

It's not on in the house yet (East Anglia, mid terrace), but I've whacked on the electric heater in my garden office. I'm going to have to look into better ways to keep it warm. I used to justify it by knowing I was saving diesel on commuting, and while this is still the case, I know I can better insulate the office.

Booklover3 · 29/09/2022 10:29

No I am waiting to see how long we can hold
out. My kids and husband don’t seem to feel the cold. Just me shivering.

MoaningMaude · 29/09/2022 10:30

No, because we have storage heaters and so they only go on when it's two jumpers cold and will be for the foreseeable future, we do have an open fire to bridge the gap but it's still not cold enough for that yet either.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/09/2022 10:30

Yes it’s been on a little bit. Not much. Unfortunately we’re having a cold one this year.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 29/09/2022 10:31

It went on for 40 minutes this morning as I've been so cold in the mornings getting ready for work. The gas fire was on for an hour last night, but not the full heating!

NumptiesIncorporated · 29/09/2022 10:34

No. I'm in Scotland and the weather has definitely turned autumnal, but it's nothing that an oodie can't deal with.

Jules131 · 29/09/2022 10:36

I ended up biting the bullet and put it on for an hour yesterday morning too. It was so chilly (what’s going on? It’s September!) and my 5 month old has a bit of a cold / cough so I decided we could justify it! I’m just hoping this is not a sign of a very cold winter to come… We could definitely do with a mild winter!

pointythings · 29/09/2022 10:37

Yes, I have my thermostat set to 17.5 (but not at night) and it comes on in the morning a few times. By lunchtime it stops for the day.

I'm £300 in credit and that's without the winter payments coming in.

NotQuiteUsual · 29/09/2022 10:39

It's the same temperature as outside in our house, but were got the blankets out and are making more hot chocolate for the kids. I'll.probabpy cave today. We're on a fixed tariff till the end of October so staying cold seems mad. But I'm trying to get the kids used to it. We won't be able to afford heating in November so there's no point getting them used to a warm house when they'll be freezing all winter.
