To ask if you've had the heating on yet?

I had mine on for an hour yesterday to "test it out", as we'd just moved in the summer, not used it yet and had the boiler serviced. Even that made me feel a bit guilty, but it felt good as yesterday was a chilly one! I've never really felt that guilty about having the heating on, at least not before this year's price shit show.

I know hardcore MN will be holding out until November...

YABU No, I've not switched my heating on
YANBU Yep, I've embraced the toasty money pit!

No, but I was tempted last night so I just got a blanket on the sofa.

FairlyIncognito · 29/09/2022 08:50

I just put ours on as have a baby and even our teen who has a heated throw said she slept better.

ScarlettSunset · 29/09/2022 08:53

No. Not yet, but I don't think I'm going to be holding out much longer. Have been using blankets on the sofa this week but still starting to feel it now.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 29/09/2022 08:54

Nope SE and still have all the windows open as gets hot while doing chores. Washed all throws and heated blankets ready but not need yet.

Verytirednow · 29/09/2022 08:55

Yes . Heating on for an hour about 7pm .
What plans do people have about getting washing dried if heating not on ?
is tumble dryer cheaper?

Deadringer · 29/09/2022 08:57

Not in the morning yet but we had it on for a couple of hours last night, it was bloody cold. I am happy enough to layer up and sit under a blanket on the sofa but dh feels the cold and wants it on.

Oblomov22 · 29/09/2022 08:57

Not yet. It doesn't feel that cold to me. Dh set the timers again this morning though, so should kick in tomorrow if it's cold enough.

megletthesecond · 29/09/2022 08:57

Yes, in Hampshire. It's set to 20° so clicks on and off.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 29/09/2022 08:59

Was trying to tough it out till October but went for it yesterday - it was 15 degrees and the kids were complaining. We're in London but Victorian house

XCTX · 29/09/2022 09:01

I have the past couple of days. I have an older house which is tracking at 14.5 degrees atm, have set it to come on at 6 in the morning and go off at 8 just to take the chill off. My dog is a mini dax and still very much a puppy so I'm scared he's overly cold as well

VestaTilley · 29/09/2022 07:58

No, holding off as long as we can. Our energy bill was £176 this month and that’s with out having heating on since April.

I did put a thermal vest on DS under his pyjamas though. We’ll take measures such as putting up curtains over the front door etc before putting the heating on, though we’re fortunate as we’re in a modern mid terrace.

That surely can't be right!

Spanielsarepainless · 29/09/2022 09:04

We tested ours yesterday morning for an hour and again today. It works beautifully!

I haven't had the heating on yet but I have had the heated airer on to dry clothes. Although I managed to dry sheets outside yesterday as there was some sun.

SquirrelSoShiny · 29/09/2022 09:06

Yep cold here too. Been on an hour in the morning last 2 days.

larkstar · 29/09/2022 09:06

Thermostat is set to 18C but we are wearing thermals and have some blankets out. I'm going to keep knocking it down when I feel fine and up again when I feel too cold - my house is well insulated so heats up quickly. What I have done it turned the radiator water temperature control down on the boiler to 3 - might try it lower - you can see the "radiator" icon next to the dial - this is the temperature of the water the boiler heats the water to before it pumps it to your radiators.
I also have the eco button on (green light) - this stops the boiler from needlessly keeping a small reservoir of water in the boiler hot and ready to pump to the taps - it means I waste a bit more water waiting for the hot water to come through - I actually put it in a jug and use it in the kettle or on the garden - I don't like letting clean water run down the drain.

It's a Worcester Bosche Greenstar 28i Junior installed in 2005 for any boiler nerds that want to know. The Drayton controller was a cheap replacement for the original that failed about 5 years ago.

Softleftpowerstance · 29/09/2022 09:08

I don’t understand how someone can have a £176 fuel bill if they’re not turning on the heating.

iratepirate · 29/09/2022 09:08

Not yet because our boiler is currently broken. Awaiting a part which is on back-order.
A bit frustrating, but I guess it’s getting us used to living without it. Layers and blankets here.

Hoosemover · 29/09/2022 09:09

Yes, setting heating to 18 overnight. I have a south facing living room so it warm during day

Belladonnamama · 29/09/2022 09:09

I put it on for one hour last Friday night. I'm trying to hold of. Last two nights I've had the blanket on me with a hot water bottle and cosy pyjamas.

TrashyPanda · 29/09/2022 09:10

scotland, and haven’t put the heating on yet.
been a wee bit chilly, but not actually cold.
still putting washing outside to dry. When it’s too cold/raining, will use heated airer, which heats the room too.

Cheeselog · 29/09/2022 09:14

Nope. No need. Thermostat says it hasn’t even dropped below 20 yet.

I don’t understand how someone can have a £176 fuel bill if they’re not turning on the heating.

That may be a direct debit which takes in account using heating and more electricity in the winter so levelled over the year. Ours is about £180 but we don't use hardly any gas in the summer.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 29/09/2022 09:15

I put it on. Much lower though that previous years (where it was 21, now it's set at 18.5 in the morning and 19.5 in the evening). We could probably endure it for a bit longer, but we can afford it and I can't be doing with feeling cold and miserable every morning.

We don’t have a tumble dryer. We’ve had washing out on the line this week but you don’t need the heating on for it to dry on an airer. It will dry at any temperature, it’s just quicker when warmer. The cheapest way is probably a dehumidifier.

5foot5 · 29/09/2022 09:22

Not yet, wanting to hold out until at least October. We are in North West and it hasn't been that cold yet, although a bit chilly last night.

Been retired for almost a year and before that WFH since the start of the pandemic. We had the heating on much more when WFH than we do when just at home. WFH I was sat at the table all day and soon got chilly. When just "at home" I am often out and about, in the garden or moving around doing stuff so don't feel the cold as much.
