To make my kids eat their crusts

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 07:30

I am soooo over trying to make my kids eat their crusts! Like what is it!? What is so awful about a crust!!?
I am however going to continue to battle making them eat them each time in the hopes they eventually will.
Is this unreadable? My husband thinks it is and it's not worth the battle, that they'll eventually eat their crusts.
But what if they turn into those adults that don't eat their crusts!

I make toasties using crusts. With melted cheese, ham and pinch of basil they taste great. Also make breadcrumbs for macaroni cheese and mix with parmesan.

CandyLeBonBon · 29/09/2022 18:40

I give my dog my crusts.

toogoodforthisworld · 29/09/2022 22:47

I actually read the crust was the most unhealthy part of the bread lol. Xx

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 29/09/2022 22:53

If they don't eat crusts, even when the bread is buttered to the edge then don't give them bread. The waste is awful.

And buy nice crusty bread that you can enjoy in peace

Again… no more bread is wasted by them not eating the crusts. One sandwich = two slices of bread. One crustless sandwich = also two slices of bread.

TimeforZeroes · 30/09/2022 00:00

Last time I nagged my kids to eat their crusts, I looked down to realise that I never eat my crusts. Lesson learned.

Perfectly good food is thrown away, that's waste.

watingroom2 · 30/09/2022 02:45

i saw a video where the crusts were rolled into spirals - dipped in egg, sugar and cinnamon and air fried - apparently delicious

I can't stand waste either.. I used to cut my sons crusts off (he was the only fussy one) and eat them myself..

What a bizarre way of looking at food. Carrots and potato peelings are edible and they commonly get chucked. The liquid from jars of tuna, kidney beans, chickpeas are all edible and they commonly get chucked. Broccoli stalks, kiwi skin, apple cores…

As PP have pointed out, the crusts don’t have to go to waste if OP doesn’t want them to. Cut them off and store them for breadcrumbs. (Not what my solution would be mind you, a child who is never exposed to crusts is never going to change their mind and start eating crusts again.)

Draughtycatflapreturns · 30/09/2022 03:21

My long departed dear mamma always insisted that I eat my crusts or I wouldn’t have curly hair. I did as I was told like a good girl and was blessed with a curly mop top for many a long year. Though it did all fall out when Mr Catflap passed during a sudden swing back flap incident.

Sadly, I now have to wear a synthetic Ivana Trump updo… I still have curly arse hair though so thank heavens for small mercies!

But forcing someone who doesn’t want it to eat it is also waste. I’m all for preventing avoidable food waste - e.g. freezing some of a loaf on purchase to make sure you don’t end up throwing any away when it starts to go stale. But there’s nothing noble in pushing children into eating something they don’t want when it doesn’t actually cut down on food consumption. If you can’t see what a hollow ‘victory’ that is, you have quite a problematic relationship with food.

FreddyHG · 29/09/2022 10:57

They don't get to eat anything else until they finish their crust. Sandwiches eaten first then fruit and no treats/desert's untill the test is finished.

Why are you telling OP what she should feed her children after the sandwich? What the fuck has fruit got to do with the original question?

You sound archaic and judgemental.

GloriousGlory · 30/09/2022 06:20

YABU OP, children are allowed to dislike food and your definition of a fussy eater is not the same as others?

Is there nothing you don't eat?

MeanderingGently · 30/09/2022 06:29

I don't like bread and hate crusts. I was made to eat them as a child, but never learned to like them. I can never understand why parents force children to eat things they don't like.... crusts are hardly essential, unlike vegetables or protein.

As others have said, if you don't like waste, cut the crusts off and use them for something else.

As an adult I seldom have bread but if I do, I still never eat the crusts.

SpidersAreShitheads · 30/09/2022 06:38

You can buy bread that doesn't have crusts on. Sorted.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 30/09/2022 06:48

Littlegoth · 29/09/2022 08:22

I feel this! My 2 year old has recently stopped eating his crusts and I don’t know why! We eat crusts. The other kids at nursery eat crusts. Everyone eats crusts except for him, and it’s a very recent thing.

@Littlegoth with some bread the crusts can be a bit 'bitter' (not quite the right word, but have a throng taste) I didn't like that as a child, but I do now. The majority of people don't notice as they eat bread & crust together, but with smaller kids they tend not to. It's also quite a different texture, more 'chewy'. For nursery/school I'd leave the crusts on as it helps to stop the bread drying out, but at home cut them off - less waste of the crusts (other uses) &!they eat more if the sandwich.

@cbaaaaaa don't make it the hill to die on.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 30/09/2022 06:49

Throng?? Strong

If you’re that sensible a grown-up, you’ll know that the crust of a slice of bread isn’t any better for you than the rest of it.

As I said, I wouldn't force crusts or have a big battle about them. I said that right above the bit you've responded to, so I assume you've just wilfully ignored it! But threads about food always have loads of posters saying it's terrible, abusive etc to get a child to eat things they don't like (you can see several on this thread). I think it's quite important to teach children to eat things they don't jump up and down with joy about, rather than teach them they only have to eat stuff they find delicious. There's a happy medium between waterboarding them with crusts and a free for all, but these threads always seem to go to the extremes 🤷‍♀️

The way to get children to eat a wider variety IME is to back off and ignore what they aren't eating.
Children's teeth are different for a start. There's loads of foods I can remember struggling with as a child because I found them hard to eat and got fed up of chewing them, crusts, uncut apples, beef, spaghetti, broccoli. I loved all of them by the time I was a teenager.

LynetteScavo · 30/09/2022 07:06

Since having DC I've stopped eating my crusts (I always did as a child, but I was one of those kids who ate anything). My children (especially DS2) have shown me crusts are a really crappy part of a sandwich. Just cut the crusts off, job done. If your DH likes crusts so much he can eat them.

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 07:36

Wow I actually didn't think I was being unreasonable but maybe I am!
I don't like fussy eaters and I don't like waste. But I guess I should maybe cut them some slack..

Yes, maybe it would be a good idea, they dont like crusts so leave them, you dont like fussy eaters and waste so you give them a hard time.
Sometimes you just have to accept that there is stuff you dont like, grow up and deal with it.

Rilo · 30/09/2022 07:14

Make breadcrumbs! Cut the crusts off (before butter/filling), whizz them in a blender/processor and shove them in a bag in the freezer. Then you’ve got a delicious crusty topping to put directly onto a pasta bake or something. Your kids will scoff that and not know it’s their old crusts.

WifeMotherWorker · 30/09/2022 07:18

YABU - I’m not a fussy eater at all and will literally eat anything. Except crusts!!

decafsoyaflatwhite · 30/09/2022 07:26

I agree with you about the food waste (nobody gets through that many breadcrumbs!) but if they won’t eat them then they won’t eat them, so I’d start buying rolls/wraps/pittas instead. Although it is a shame, because the crusts are the best bit…

Hopefully they will change their minds back again before they become non crust eating adults 😉

RegeJeanPageMeOnMyCellphone · 30/09/2022 07:27

Comes on MN to ask if being unreasonable. Majority of posters say some variation of yes. Argues it’s not unreasonable at all and calls non crust eaters ‘the worst people’. OK.

Just stop buying bread and switch to pittas, wraps, flatbreads or anything else that’s not going to give you fussy eater or food waste anxiety.

Posters have given you lots of ideas to use up the removed crusts but this seems like the parenting hill you’re prepared to die on with a 2 and 4 year old. Good luck OP 😂

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 17:05

I'm going to make sure they eat their crusts because as I'd feared, adult not eating my crusts people are the worst people. Almost as bad as mushroom people.

The worst people are controlling ones, who judge people for not liking a particular food and people who ask AIBU, get told yes and then decide they're not!
