To make my kids eat their crusts

I am soooo over trying to make my kids eat their crusts! Like what is it!? What is so awful about a crust!!?
I am however going to continue to battle making them eat them each time in the hopes they eventually will.
Is this unreadable? My husband thinks it is and it's not worth the battle, that they'll eventually eat their crusts.
But what if they turn into those adults that don't eat their crusts!

I found cutting of the crust actually reducedthe amount of waste. I cut of less then half a cm, and they then eat the whole crustless sandwich, whereas if I give it with crust on, they leave all the bread in the vage vicinity of the crust.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 29/09/2022 08:44

I really don't get parents who force their children to eat stuff they don't like. Would you sit there and force down food you don't like?

@AlongCameBetsy that's what bothers me most, constantly putting crusts into the bin!

What I used to do is cut them off and make them into breadcrumbs. No waste, no arguments.

Maybe no one explained to you but children grow up. Their teeth fall out and stronger/larger teeth replace them. Their moths become bigger. They then eat crusts.

ILoveDriving · 29/09/2022 08:45

If you force them to eat the crusts they will definitely become adults who don't eat the crusts!! (which is fine, but seems to be a big deal to you!)

If you just let it be, as they get older they'll start to eat them!

I forgot my kids used to leave the crusts until reading this thread!!! But yes, they did! My 10 year old is currently eating toast (he's poorly today so having breakfast in bed!!) and as far as I'm aware, he's eating the whole slice, crusts and all. Both my boys eat the crusts now

There are lots of things little kids don't like. Don't make a fuss, and in time their tastes change and they make the choice themselves to try new things

Parents who had it done to them internalise it as 'right' or 'for your own good' and then do it to their children in turn.

My youngest, who isn't that young, only eats crusts if we've had bacon. He eats the middles as normal, then goes and dunks the crusts in the bacon fat.
Don't sweat the small stuff.

There you go, serve them with a dip like they do with a Domino's. Or use wraps instead (although my DP still leaves the bit of folded wrap with no filling grrr).

PaperPalace · 29/09/2022 08:48

I don't force my kids to eat. However I must admit it would annoy me if they started leaving their crusts!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 09:47

My dad made me eat my crusts as they make your hair curl. He insists that's why he has curly hair. I ate them, my hair is poker straight 🤣

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 09:48

sandgrown · 29/09/2022 07:41

They will never have curly hair ha ha !

Is that you dad?!!!

Cheeselog · 29/09/2022 09:48

I’m genuinely surprised by the number of posters on this thread who don’t eat crusts as adults Confused

OriginalUsername3 · 29/09/2022 09:52

I saw a video where someone made pinwheels from the crusts if you don't like waste.

You will create food problems by battling them on food. You're creating the problem.

What?! That is the best bit!

OriginalUsername3 · 29/09/2022 09:55

Also. Do you actually put butter/spread on the crusts?
I never eat the crust when DH makes toast because he only puts the stuff in the middle so the crusts are just dry and horrible. I always put spread/filling right over the edges

ParentallyUnprepared · 29/09/2022 09:56

Try eating something you don't like everyday. See how it feels.

Why force your kids to go through that?

TacCat49 · 29/09/2022 09:56

You could cut the crusts off, then toast them up in the oven and serve as croutons when you next have soup.

paintitallover · 29/09/2022 09:56

I wouldn't, but I do eat my own so they caught on.

Songlyrics · 29/09/2022 09:58

This was how my son ate sandwiches when he was 3. He'd take one or two bites and declare himself finished because he didn't like the crusts. It was ridiculous but we ignored it and let him do what he wanted. By 4 years old he would eat the entire sandwich, all of his own accord.

I wouldn't go into battle with a child over something like this as it will likely make the problem worse.

To make my kids eat their crusts
maddy68 · 29/09/2022 09:59

Why? The texture is so different and the filling isn't in the crust.
This is one battle you don't need to fight

Pinkishpurple · 29/09/2022 10:00

I'm in my 40s and usually don't eat crusts unless it's really fresh bread. Why are you making lunchtime unpleasant for them!

FlowersareEverything · 29/09/2022 10:01

You haven’t eaten a proper crust until you’ve eaten a Scottish plain loaf, preferably Mother’s Pride (thick cut). The outsiders are a highly sought after delicacy, particularly if you’re making toasted cheese. Pan loaf crusts pale into insignificance in comparison!

thelastgreatdynasty · 29/09/2022 10:03

Definitely think you need to drop this one. My children eat their crusts, but I don't. They're so dry.

SofiaSoFar · 29/09/2022 10:04

Crusts are the best bit of bread.

Our local bakeries used to do an amazing plain loaf, nicer than mother's pride. Sadly it seems to be well and truly in the past. Let's hope mother's pride never stop making them.

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/09/2022 10:17

Meh, I don't eat crusts, and I don't use the ends of bread either, I just like the bready bit in the middle!

TheGoogleMum · 29/09/2022 10:19

It's annoying but probably not worth the battle
