To make my kids eat their crusts

I am soooo over trying to make my kids eat their crusts! Like what is it!? What is so awful about a crust!!?
I am however going to continue to battle making them eat them each time in the hopes they eventually will.
Is this unreadable? My husband thinks it is and it's not worth the battle, that they'll eventually eat their crusts.
But what if they turn into those adults that don't eat their crusts!

Yes I do think eating your crusts fills you up more.

I'm going to make sure they eat their crusts because as I'd feared, adult not eating my crusts people are the worst people. Almost as bad as mushroom people.

I'm really pleased I don't know you

Then you're a bit dim

SugarNspices · 29/09/2022 17:13

Crusts are dry round the edges quite often so I see their point

Goldfishjones · 29/09/2022 17:16

Bread rolls are your friends here.

200degrees · 29/09/2022 17:20

I mean I think the onus is on you to make crusts appealing to them.

as a kid I hated crusts, but as an adult I love bread and finish all my crusts

kids have a basic palette, they don’t like crusts because they’re harder and lack flavour. All you need to do is make sure you put the butter up to the edge of the sandwich or put some cheese on the crust for them to find it more palatable. Or get a side sauce they can dip into.

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 17:22

@candycaneframe why? For thinking that if you eat more food it will fill you up more?

Because crusts are a tiny % of the overall slice of bread. It will make absolutely 0 difference to them being full unless they leave a lot of the main sandwich too, in which case it will be easier to cut them off beforehand

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/09/2022 17:26

I don't always eat my crusts, I have some issues swallowing, and crusts seem to be dryer (though I do like the crust slice of bread, but only if toasted and loads of butter...)..

Cut off crusts before you make something, bag and freeze - turn into breadcrumbs to use as filler in things or to coat things, or use as is to fill up the center of a bread and butter pudding.

There you go, zero waste, zero battle.

DorritLittle · 29/09/2022 17:32

Blimey, so much angst here about crusts! I agree with you OP. I don't force my kids to eat them but I do often suggest they might consider it one day.

monkeyupsidedown · 29/09/2022 17:38

@Cheeselog

Yes, there’s absolutely no difference between finishing your own meal and finishing a meal which has been half chewed by someone else 🙄

If the kids don't eat the crusts, she can cut them off before serving the rest of the sandwich to tge kids of course. I don't mean eat whats left, I mean the kids being srtved crustless bread and mum eating the crusts, since it's the same thing according to her.

I can't believe that I need to spell that out tbh.

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 17:03

@monkeyupsidedown 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why is my comment hilarious? Why don't you just cut off the crusts and eat them yourself? Or do you see them ad inferiour food too, just like your kids?

monkeyupsidedown · 29/09/2022 17:41

For reference, I do eat my daughters crusts, so I don't see why you wouldn't.

Funkyblues101 · 29/09/2022 17:41

It's a huge waste of bread. I assume if they were hungry they would eat the crusts. Your money. Up to you.

liveforsummer · 29/09/2022 17:47

Leave it - battles over food are never wise anyway but definitely not over something as unimportant as a crust if bread. Hardly loaded with nutritional value!

liveforsummer · 29/09/2022 17:48

AlongCameBetsy · 29/09/2022 07:36

The amount of wasted bread started really bothering me - they were refusing to eat the bread that was near the crust as well. Now I feed them wraps and rolls to avoid the battle.

Cutting them off wound help this one too

Darbs76 · 29/09/2022 17:48

No, never forced my kids to eat, not starting now. What benefit does anyone get from eating the end of the bread? None

AuldReekie1905 · 29/09/2022 17:48

I don't understand people like you. Would you force an adult to eat something they didn't want to? No. Why do we force children? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Sallyh87 · 29/09/2022 17:51

I don’t eat crusts, dislike them and a waste of my precious calories (though hopefully that’s not the reason your kids don’t eat them!).

My mom was big against food waste, she would make me crust less sandwiches and then give me the crusts with jam on as a pudding. Not sure how committed you are to avoiding crust waste though. This seems a lot of effort to me 😁

Thatboymum · 29/09/2022 17:52

Would you appreciate it if an adult forced you to eat something you had clearly expressed you didn’t like ? I suspect not and children should be given the exact same respect . I actually think it’s abusive to force feed kids and creates issues around food in general

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/09/2022 17:57

As a crust eater of many years the crusts aren't quite the treat they once were, specifically the ends/heels of a sliced loaf. Despite DS growing out of the no-crust sandwich, the ends have been more problematic. There's only so much cheese on toast that a parent can eat and breadcrumbs to make out of it.

Not a big problem in the face of it all - but all those Dead Bread Ends amount to quite a large amount of Wheat gone to waste.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 29/09/2022 18:17

My DD never eats her pizza crusts.
So I eat them. Winner winner chicken dinner

Sux2buthen · 29/09/2022 18:24

FreddyHG · 29/09/2022 10:57

They don't get to eat anything else until they finish their crust. Sandwiches eaten first then fruit and no treats/desert's untill the test is finished.

Ooh stuff that

If you’re that sensible a grown-up, you’ll know that the crust of a slice of bread isn’t any better for you than the rest of it.

As I said, I wouldn't force crusts or have a big battle about them. I said that right above the bit you've responded to, so I assume you've just wilfully ignored it! But threads about food always have loads of posters saying it's terrible, abusive etc to get a child to eat things they don't like (you can see several on this thread). I think it's quite important to teach children to eat things they don't jump up and down with joy about, rather than teach them they only have to eat stuff they find delicious. There's a happy medium between waterboarding them with crusts and a free for all, but these threads always seem to go to the extremes 🤷‍♀️
