To make my kids eat their crusts

I am soooo over trying to make my kids eat their crusts! Like what is it!? What is so awful about a crust!!?
I am however going to continue to battle making them eat them each time in the hopes they eventually will.
Is this unreadable? My husband thinks it is and it's not worth the battle, that they'll eventually eat their crusts.
But what if they turn into those adults that don't eat their crusts!

I don't force my kids to eat the crusts, but I expect them to finish what they've been given before asking for more. Unfinished sandwich on your plate and you want an apple? Nope, not until you've finished your sandwich. Eaten 90% of your dinner and still hungry - fill your boots!

VeridicalVagabond · 29/09/2022 13:52

I'm 32 and have never eaten a crust in my life. They're dry and gross. They get whizzed up and used to make breaded chicken bites.

I also have a PHD so don't think it's held me back in life much.

Why exactly do you care if they eat them or not?

purplecorkheart · 29/09/2022 13:52

As a person who adores the crust of bread I suggest making the sandwiches as normal and then cut off the crusts and eat as a snack or sandwich makers bonus,.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 29/09/2022 13:56

They're just extra carbs with very little of use in them. I'd be annoyed if they were picking the salad leaves out, but not this. Leave it.

My (lovely but not well educated) mum used to make me eat them as a kid because she was CONVINCED that they contained "all the roughage and goodness" of the bread. This was cheap white supermarket bread too, not the stuff with seeds on the outside. Maybe she thought that the non-existent "goodness" floated the the edges and made them brown?

SalviaOfficinalis · 29/09/2022 14:00

Ah, I haven’t heard the word roughage for so long! Makes me feel nostalgic.

BadNomad · 29/09/2022 14:00

Eh? It's not "paying to feed the birds", it's "not throwing food in the bin". Whether your kid eats the crusts or not, that those slices are gone. The money is spent.

Suzi888 · 29/09/2022 14:01

Waste of food not to! YANBU

bringincrazyback · 29/09/2022 14:04

I'm 54 and I don't eat my crusts.
Is this really a hill to die on in parenting terms OP?

monkeyupsidedown · 29/09/2022 14:07

Why don't you just eat their crusts? Apparantly you have no problem eating crusts, they do and you both need to eat. Just cut off their crusts and eat them yourself.

If you don't want to then you're a hypocrite.

cbaaaaaa · 29/09/2022 13:46

Well, I guess I've found all the non crust eating adults 😆🤣
Sorry for triggering everyone's crust eating trauma.

I think it's a waste and it's annoying because as soon as they "finish" their sandwich (they are 4 and 2, the 4 year old is the one who doesn't eat them and it's only recently he's started not eating them) they say they are still hungry, so haven't filled up on the actual meal.

I wouldn't force my kids to eat something they didn't like, I agree that is unhealthy and leads to an unhealthy attitude towards food.
However if it's something inoffensive like crusts (or the other day, pasta that he'd eaten many times before) then no, I'm not going to just accept it.

Also, throwing it out for the birds is just laying to feed birds, still a waste of money.

A couple of crusts won't be the difference between a child being full or not after a meal

You're ridiculous

Yes, there’s absolutely no difference between finishing your own meal and finishing a meal which has been half chewed by someone else 🙄

Cheeselog · 29/09/2022 14:13

By the way, please don’t feed bread to birds regularly! It’s like junk food for them.

MintyChipton · 29/09/2022 14:14

Surely the bit of crust left isn't going to fill them up much more, unless they're leaving loads of sandwich attached to it in which case you'd be better off cutting it off yourself so you can do it evenly or as I said using bread cakes or similar.

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 29/09/2022 14:32

I buy sliced white bread with no crusts.

To make it even worse, I live in France and fail to see the attraction of the much feted MN crusty baguette which goes stale by the time you have walked from the baker's to the car 😳

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 29/09/2022 14:34

An average slice of bread is around 100 calories. The crust of that is going to be 10, 15 calories at the most. Do you really think a maximum of 30 extra calories - food they won’t even enjoy - is going to stop them being hungry later?

Also, throwing it out for the birds is just paying to feed birds, still a waste of money.

But how? You haven’t spent any extra money! It takes two slices of bread to make a sandwich regardless of what happens with the crusts. There’s literally zero difference in cost.

uggmum · 29/09/2022 14:42

I have never eaten the crusts.
I don't eat the crusts of anything. (Bread, pizza, pies etc)

I have never enforced crust eating in my home.

I would always avoid food battles. If my DC didn't like crusts then I would cut them off. Why sweat the small stuff.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 29/09/2022 08:44

I really don't get parents who force their children to eat stuff they don't like. Would you sit there and force down food you don't like?

I wouldn't force the crusts, but I've never really understood this argument because as a sensible grown up I often eat things I don't like very much. I'd rather not eat vegetables and wholemeal bread, but I do because it's beneficial to me. It's a good life skill to learn not everything can be exactly as you like it all the time, surely?

TootsAtOwls · 29/09/2022 15:31

I don't eat crusts because they have a horrible burnt flavour. Which is probably why kids don't fancy them either

If you’re that sensible a grown-up, you’ll know that the crust of a slice of bread isn’t any better for you than the rest of it.

Arnaquer · 29/09/2022 15:45

God no! I don't eat my crusts either. So dry and chewy, yuck.

Ugzbugz · 29/09/2022 15:46

Cut the crusts off for breadcrumbs before giving to them or save for the ducks.

I've never understood the obsession with eating horrible dry old crusts. Never force feed kids, yes encourage but who cares about crusts.

DemelzaandRoss · 29/09/2022 16:10

I never ever eat crusts. My DH eats the ones I leave in the fridge.
Have never enforced ‘all food must be eaten’.
Life’s too short to obsess over this.

worriedatthistime · 29/09/2022 16:28

Never made mine , sometimes they do now sometimes not and I am the same

worriedatthistime · 29/09/2022 16:29

Switch to wraps , thins , rolls and no crusts
Or cut them off first and use breadcrumbs if waste bothers you
