To find bananas repulsive?!

Bananabread157 · 28/09/2022 15:33

Just to be clear, I love the taste of bananas and absolutely love anything banana flavoured or banana based.

but an actual banana? No way. Love the taste. Cannot STAND the texture- it physically repulses me and I can’t even explain why!

anyone else?

Utterly vile, slimy things.

They are fighting their own pandemic though and on the verge of extinction. The Panama fungus is wiping them out so they could well disappear forever. Bananas are infertile so all banana plants are clones of a single plant, and genetically identical. Therefore, you can't try and breed a resistant strain.

Ooh banana bread... I am getting food craving inspiration from this thread 😆

InPraiseOfBacchus · 28/09/2022 16:30

I'm a fan of the fresh banana fruit, but I'm almost on the same page as the haters... I HATE the sound of people eating them and I try not to do it in front of other people as I find it very noticeable and anti-social!!

I also dislike how banana pees smell very strongly very quickly. I always notice if someone's put one in my kitchen bin. As a kid, I hated having them in my packed lunch because it made everything in my bag smell like garbage for days.

Now this is definitely me being overly sensitive, but I hate seeing people eat them whole too - sliced up with other things in a fruit salad, smoothie or sandwich is fine, but when eating them whole people tend to take huge, messy, unmanageable bites, which gives me the ick about someone!

ParentallyUnprepared · 28/09/2022 16:34

I'm exactly the same.

My husband made a banana bread yesterday and I can't get enough.

But an actual banana is gross

Leftbutcameback · 28/09/2022 16:37

Not keen on banana texture either, but not as bad as oranges where the texture makes me want to throw up. Squishy with stringy bits. Like some sort of raw meat 😖

Leftbutcameback · 28/09/2022 16:37

Apparently the Queen used to eat bananas with a knife and fork. Just thought I'd add that!

Circleoflife2057 · 28/09/2022 16:38

I'm the opposite. Love a banana, but hate banana flavoured things!

Thesearmsofmine · 28/09/2022 16:41

YANBU banana and baked beans are in the same disgusting level for me 🤢

kingtamponthefurred · 28/09/2022 16:47

I love bananas so long as they are fresh and yellow, but cannot bear them once they get to the brown-spotted stage.

Babdoc · 28/09/2022 16:53

Weird! I love bananas. Sliced into a bowl of Weetabix, or served with thick Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey, or sliced as a side to a home made curry, or made into walnut and banana loaf, chopped into a fruit salad, made into date and banana chutney… they are delicious.

AriettyHomily · 28/09/2022 16:56

I will never willingly eat a banana. Vile things.

sarahc336 · 28/09/2022 16:58

They also stink 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Surelyitscoffeetime · 28/09/2022 17:01

Hideous things. I had hypnotherapy to cure my phobia of them. If a child came to me and asked me to open one, I would physically wretch at the thought.

This is an interesting fact I didn’t know…

Used to love bananas, but my tastes changed after having covid 3 years ago and bananas just don’t taste as good anymore …

Love banana bread though, unfortunately I’m a terrible baker and can’t seem to find it available to buy in the shop…

If anyone here has an idiot proof banana bread recipe, please share?

I use basically this recipe, but with dried cherries and raisins rather than sultanas and walnuts.

INGREDIENTS
Yields: 8-10 slices

100 grams sultanas
75 millilitres dark rum (or Bourbon)
175 grams plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
½ teaspoon salt
125 grams unsalted butter (melted)
150 grams caster sugar
2 large eggs
4 small very ripe bananas mashed (approx. 400g total weight with skins on)
60 grams chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

METHOD
Put the sultanas and rum or bourbon in a smallish saucepan and bring to the boil.
Remove from the heat, cover and leave for an hour if you can, or until the sultanas have absorbed most of the liquid, then drain.
Preheat the oven to 170ºC/150°C Fan/gas mark 3/325ºF and get started on the rest. Put the flour, baking powder, bicarb and salt in a medium-sized bowl and, using your hands or a wooden spoon, combine well.
In a large bowl, mix the melted butter and sugar and beat until blended. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then the peeled and mashed bananas. Then, with your wooden spoon, stir in the walnuts, drained sultanas and vanilla extract. Add the flour mixture, a third at a time, stirring well after each bit. Scrape into a loaf tin (23 x 13 x 7cm / 9 x 5 x 3 inches) and bake in the middle of the oven for 1-1¼ hours. When it's ready, an inserted toothpick or fine skewer should come out cleanish. Leave in the tin on a rack to cool, and eat thickly or thinly sliced, as you prefer.

Slimy food.

waterlego · 28/09/2022 17:13

YANBU, they’re rank. I occasionally eat one because they are a very quick and easy way to get a few calories on board if I’m on my way to work and haven’t made enough time to eat 😬 I have to block off my nose while I eat it though because the smell is horrible and yes, the texture is awful too.

I’ve just made some banana bread (which choc chips) which is obviously a different kettle of fish bananas.

waterlego · 28/09/2022 17:15

@Chloefairydust, I always use the Mary Berry one. Hasn’t failed me yet (and I’m not a good baker)

Hate the smell, taste and texture of bananas, plus not only do they make my mouth itch when eat them, they also wreck havoc with my digestion and cause awful bloating, so haven’t eaten them since I was little.

Decades later, I discovered that bananas are high in FODMAPS. I like to think my aversion to them was instinctual!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 28/09/2022 17:25

Bananas are the devil’s colon, the stringy bits when you peel them are repulsive. I eat them everyday purely to get one of my 5 a day, grim things.

DopamineDresser · 28/09/2022 17:30

DickDarstedly · 28/09/2022 15:43

I am with you. I can't stand the sound of people eating them either, there's a kind of pulpy, mushy sound like an animal eating. When I was a child I remember being repulsed by people in my family eating them. I thought they sounded like monkeys.

I don't mind the taste but I eat them out of duty as they are a true whole food and give the best energy boost that you'd only usually get out of bread, cakes etc.

100% with you on this - the squashy, squelchy, mushy noise - I always have to leave the room, can't deal with it (see also: apple eating)

To be edible for me, bananas have to be exactly the right level of ripeness (no 'crunch' to them but not too soft) and have zero bruises/spots / marks / squishy bits.

And I have real difficulties with the 'stringy' bits, whatever they're called - shudder

But I persist because they're so good for you ....

Why eat them everyday if you hate them so much?? 🤣

And thanks for the recipes, I like the look of the Mary berry one, never thought of adding chocolate to a banana bread… Everything is better with chocolate though surely 😋

fourquenelles · 28/09/2022 17:31

Bananas are the Devil's colon. Fact.

RolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl1 · 28/09/2022 17:35

I don’t understand how folks can hate them yet still eat them?! You’d have to pay me an insane amount of money to even attempt it and even then I think I’d be sick trying.

I’ve been known to instruct small children on how to peel them from far away, preferably behind glass, because I will not touch them let alone unfurl their disgusting rubbery outer layer for anyone! My own DC went banana-less until they were old enough to peel their own.
