Liz Truss - why didn't we realise?

Turn the clock back a month, and we knew she was stupid, and that more than likely she was the wrong choice for a sensible, responsible prime minister - but did people join the dots and realise that she was such an ideologue / so in thrall to ideologues?

AIBU to say that the media didn't spell out exactly what a Truss premiership meant?

She and Kwazi have written a book on exactly what's happening now for god's sake! Why wasn't the possibility they would act on it examined in more detail?

I'm not a member of the Tory party - did they realise what they were voting for?

In fact 2% of Tories polled said they were voting Truss because she was white! And that's just the ones who admitted it. They were so motivated by this they volunteered the information. The pollster didn't think to ask.

It doesn't make it more expensive to borrow unless the bank of England is trying to prop up the pound. It does make it more expensive to repay foreign currency loans.

Did you miss that Truss was a Remainer like her heroine Thatcher?
We had a Leave PM. He ditched auaterity, embraced levelling up and investment in public services and significantly liberalised non EU immigration. He was driven out by bitter self righteous Remainers over a piece of cake. It was obvious he would be replaced by someone to his right but they couldn't acknowledge that as they were pretending he was far right. This is where such exaggeration gets you.

She was a pragmatic Remainer, but she’s bffs with KK and Minford so go figure.

We had an amoral clown for PM and fucked up to the extent that he had to go. Tory MPs rightly favoured Sunak but the members chose Truss. So here we are…

He was driven out by his own party because of the Arse Pincher scandal. Do you have the breakdown of Remain/Leave MPs who quit on him @Koitaleel?

BetterFuture1985 · 05/10/2022 14:15

Liz Truss has very shaky Remainer credentials. Apparently she had to be persuaded to support Remain and her preference was largely based on staying on the winning side rather than having any conviction either way. Remain were expected to win right up until the last week of campaigning.

Boris had to go. It wasn’t over a piece of cake at all. It was much deeper than that.

it shouldn’t have been Boris or Truss. I’m gobsmacked that even the Tory party can’t find anyone better. Or won’t vote for anyone better.

but then they have a history of removing the whip from anyone remotely decent

Koitaleel · 05/10/2022 15:58

I didn't mean MPs but the commentariat and Twitterati who created the furore that made the Tories panic. They routinely called him far right. Now we have a real far right PM. Boris was a shameless liar with no principles but that's far better than someone with the wrong principles. And it was obvious he would be replaced by someone to his right as, Brexit aside, they were all to the right of him. Whether it was arse pinching or a piece of cake was it really worth it to get the arrogant heartless incompetent monster we have. Sorry but no one who posted "Johnson out" (not saying you did) has any status here.
I'm not a Tory and never have been and I didn't vote for Boris. Nor did I support hard Brexit (I wanted the Norway option in deference to the close vote) But I could see he was the most liberal One Nation Tory on offer. "Always keep a hold of Nurse, for fear of meeting something worse"

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/10/2022 16:36

It wasn't the commentaries and twitterati furore that made him go. Despite all his lying and lawbreaking, he went because his MPs were pissed off at being made to look ridiculous. He sent them out to lie to the press about him knowing about Chris Pincher's sexual assaults on MPs and staff.

FFS, this only happened in June.🤯🤯🤯

BJ still has to appear in front of parliamentary committee to justify explain his various behaviours in office. Comments, twitter, gossip regardless. If he doesn't weasel out of it they'll pull his pants down in public.

Zilla1 · 06/10/2022 15:45

It seems entirely unfair to suggest the party has been on a jape to replace each PM with a less competent one. As it looks like the government flirted with mass pension fund insolvency, perhaps it might be interesting how Liz's successor could exceed her achievements if she doesn't last the two years. Wonder when party members might realise how much of their wealth recently evaporated from their pensions and investments though it looks like MPs are there already. How many were unfortunately unable to attend their own party conference?
