To feel uncomfortable using this Hotel toilet?

Staying 7 nights with DH in a 4 star hotel in Mallorca, Spain. We may be married but I don't feel comfortable with doing my business in this toilet while he is in the room. There is a gap on every side of the door and it does not close completely.

Is this a standard setup in hotels in Spain or do you think I'm not being unreasonable and it's very odd?

See photo attached.

You're married though
If you can't use the loo with him knowing then I don't know what to say
I'm sorry you feel awkward
It would not be my fave
Just go up from breakfast to use the toilet

Honestly it is routine for bathrooms to offer privacy for a reason. I agree with you totally!

I had a horrific reaction to antibiotics on our honeymoon and was very very grateful for a proper bathroom door and fan and loud taps to run!

If you had bumped into the ‘no en-suite in the master bedroom’ crowd on mumsnet you’d have got absolute understanding of your situation 😊

TheBirdintheCave · 28/09/2022 08:54

My husband and I lived in a one bathroom flat for three years. If we hadn't shared a bathroom we would have been late for work.

My husband is my best friend, he is practically an extension of myself. There's nothing about myself that I feel uncomfortable with him knowing/seeing.

FirewomanSam · 28/09/2022 08:57

Never stay in a CitizenM if you think this is bad! The loo and shower are basically in a frosted glass tube in the middle of the bedroom, no privacy at all. My husband and I aren’t that bothered (and we love their hotels) but we do tend to make sure the TV or some music is on before one of us uses the loo!

I can’t imagine never farting in front of my husband though. Sounds painful! I stayed in a hotel room with a friend a few weeks ago and was so uncomfortable from not being able to pass wind when I needed to. Cannot imagine my entire marriage feeling like that!

honeylulu · 28/09/2022 09:00

Bathroom with gaps around door not great i agree. I'm not prissy but I wouldn't relish the idea of my companion hearing my toilet business. I'd live with it though, especially for weeing. We all have to go and my husband knows I have a bladder!
If I needed a plop I'd give him some warning so he can go for a little walk/sit on balcony/put earphones in. I'd feel quite comfortable saying so though.

In fact H is even more private about his pooing habits, like a very shy cat. On holiday all of us get sent out of the apartment when he needs to go. When the kids realised the purpose of this they delighted upon loudly greeting him when he arrived to join us at the pool or whatever - "hello Dad, did you have a NICE POO?" Hopefully your husband won't do that too you though.

Get a grip OP.

Brefugee · 28/09/2022 09:25

how long have you been married? he does know that you shit and fart like a normal person, right?

rookiemere · 28/09/2022 09:36

This does seem to be a thing in Spain.

I posted last year about looking for holiday hotels and finding that some of the 5 star ones seemed to have open plan or frosted glass bathrooms- one even had a bath smack bang in the middle of the bedroom.

I think it's bizarre. Even if couples apparently should revel in the sounds, sights and smells of their DPs ablutions, DS 16 is bringing a pal and the two of them would probably die of constipation after a week of being too embarrassed to do a poo.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 28/09/2022 09:38

Lots of hotel rooms seem to be like this now, big glass walls into the bathroom, I presume to allow more natural light, but it is a nuisance. On holiday we had to have the bedroom curtains closed if you wanted to wash/shower/bathe because the bathroom had a glass wall with an utterly pointless blind (loo was in its own cupboard). Worse still was my teenage son and daughter sharing a room next door had to keep leaving the room to give the other privacy to get dressed etc.

To be fair hearing your partners insides dropping into a toilet really is a buzzkill and instant ick inducer so I feel your pain OP.

AceofPentacles · 28/09/2022 09:41

I thought this would be one of those hotel rooms where the entire walls and door are made of glass and you can see (and hear) everything!

Think yourself lucky I once stayed at a hotel in Germany which had a large glass window in the bathroom that looked onto the bed 🤣

As I said there would have probably been a button somewhere to turn it opaque.

Re the US toilets and gaps - Is it to discourage people from shooting up in there I wonder!

Hahaha!! This!

That toilet is probably about two feet from the bed as well, so you have a ring-side seat...

OneFootintheRave · 28/09/2022 10:05

Deffo not the the standard set up in spain. What the point of a bloody door if it does not close properly. I'm with you OP. Sure I can COPE with hearing/smelling DH doing his business, doesn't mean I WANT to in an ideal situation Grin

LovinglifeAF · 28/09/2022 12:11

Just because someone wants a bit of privacy in the toilet doesn’t mean they’re uncomfortable with their partner or that their relationship is somehow lesser than those who are merrily shitting away in each other’s presence.

Hbh17 · 28/09/2022 12:14

Oh for goodness sake, this must be the most ridiculous OP I gave ever seen! It's absolutely fine - just enjoy your holiday.

Soon you'll be getting the misery guts on to say how lucky you are for being able to afford a holiday and they'd happily watch their DHs do his ablutions but haven't been away since 1973.

Exactly.

Intimacy is not defined by how many bodily functions one does performatively. A little mystique goes a long way.

Make a Spotify playlist and play it while you are in there to mask the sound.

Snoop Dogg - "Drop it like it's hot"
Salt N Pepa - "Push It"
Surfaris- "Wipe Out"
Johnny Cash - "Ring of Fire"

Love this idea 🤣

That made me laugh out loud!

ALadyofLeisure · 29/09/2022 12:15

I review hotels and often take my mum or boyfriend along as a plus one and hate it when there's not enough privacy. A solid wall-to-ceiling door with a lock and sound-proofing is essential for both parties to be fully comfortable I think! I'm always astonished that some hotels think see-through doors or - even worse, when I was sharing a room with my mum in France, no door at all between the bathroom and the bedroom with the loo just a few feet from the bed. Funnily enough I've just written about Baths in hotel bedrooms which includes my 'worst' bathroom - it was entirely see through! Thankfully I was just looking around rather than staying there - pic attached hopefully
