AIBU?

Glasgow or Liverpool to host Eurovision

PineappleSlushies · 27/09/2022 18:15

I've just read on the daily mail that these two cities are the final two in the running to host Eurovision. The comments on it are really quite horrible, and I am hoping to have a nice thread where we can talk about the benefits of both of these cities in hosting the Eurovision (I am from one of the Cities mentioned - not saying what one I listed them in alphabetical order on the heading 😁). they are both great contenders as far as I'm concerned.

is it possible to have a positive conversation about this? Can we beat the Daily mail readers and find something good to say?

I will happily go to either of these lovely cities to watch Eurovision/soak up the atmosphere.

Both fabulous cities who will go out of their way to put on a great show to honour Ukraine. Excellent shortlist

These are my second and third favourite UK cities and the ones I hoped would be in contention. Either will be great.

I know! I am actually really happy at the final two and I love Eurovision so I am pretty excited about this. I know both cities have their problems but they have lots of great positive things as well (I live in one and have visited the other a few times).

I was sure Manchester would make the shortlist, but both of these cities would be great.

@mumthatlikeswinelol what city doesn't have a drug problem?

I know little about Glasgow so can't comment. I know Liverpool well and it's a beautiful city with a lot going for it. The only thing is I'd be concerned about their capacity to host such a big event....have they got the venue for it?

I’m hoping for Glasgow - mainly because I have close family there so have somewhere to stay (would love to see it live if I can!)

Yes both have venues big enough, they had to show that when they put the bid in.

I don't know... but I know each city that bid had a criterion they had to fill. I might be using that word wrong!

Host cities must demonstrate they have a 10,000-seater venue, be close to an international airport and have enough hotel rooms for 2,000 delegates. There is interest across the UK, Eurovision says.

I don’t know Glasgow at all but I love Liverpool and it would be easy for me to get to, so I hope it’s there! Lots of hotels right next to the arena. I would say it’s easier for people in the UK to get to than Glasgow too.

Liverpool is definitely easier to get to and it does have a greater musical history than Glasgow, (Although Glasgow does have it's own greats but hey... who can compete with the Beatles?) I think it would be a great choice for the Eurovision. I would be happy with either choice but especially excited if it's in my city!

And I was surprised Manchester wasn't on the list either!

Surely it depends whereabouts in the U.K. you are trying to get there from?
Belfast - flights to both. Scotland - Glasgow. Wales - Liverpool.
I think travel for international visitors is probably more important, both cities have international airports I would assume.

I live near one of the other cities that have been knocked out and would've loved it to be local but I've always said Glasgow should host it.
If we want the rest of Europe to feel comfortable when they're here then Scotland is definitely the better choice.

Well yes, but Liverpool is more accessible to more people. People coming from London or the South of England would find Liverpool easier to travel to and London has a much bigger population than the whole of Scotland. Liverpool is more accessible for Wales as well. I think you're right about Northern Ireland.

I'm in Glasgow btw, so I am not arguing for Liverpool because I live there. I think Glasgow has good transport links from most of the UK though. But it will be a factor.

Was about to post the same.

I'd love to see it held at Glasgow and am excited about all the "postcards" they can show in between of some of the lesser well known parts of the UK.
