To think coverless duvets seem like a good idea?

Just go in the washing machine when dirty. Use with a sheet and a bedspread. The thought of no longer wrestling with duvet covers and not having them hanging over the banisters and shower door drying is quite enticing. Anyone got one and would you recommend?

I like the posh hotel way of using a massive sheet to envelope the duvet, although wrangling it onto the line would be a challenge.
I use a sheet under the duvet cover so the actual cover only needs changing once a month, the pillowcases and sheets get changed weekly.

We have a couple for DCs boarding as they're easy to transport and a lot less faff that dragging duvet covers and such about. They both go in the washing machine together and then tumble for an hour and hang over the bannisters. They dry in no time.

I think they're night owl ones. They're v soft.

ilovesooty · 26/09/2022 15:45

I've had Amazon basic ones for nearly a year. Now I know I can get on with the concept I've just ordered a couple of Night Owl ones.

thepurplewhisperer · 26/09/2022 15:47

My daughter has sensory processing issues and uses a coverless duvet from M&S. It's made from lightweight material and designed to wash in the machine very easily. It dries super quickly too. We've not looked back.

Ribbena · 26/09/2022 15:51

I bought one earlier this year and love it. So far I’ve dried it outside, no problem - but will have to resort to another drying method now that it’s colder.

I love that I don’t have to wrestle with duvet covers any more, and I intend to replace all the dc’s duvets with coverless ones. Will cut down on my ironing and will free up cupboard space.

babyboyHarrison · 26/09/2022 15:52

I thought it would be good, bought a 10.5tog double for my sons bed. Looked lovely dark blue spacey with planets and stars etc, fist time thorough the wash it came out with odd faded patches. Think it was too big for the washing machine. It did dry quickly and it feels lovely but looks rubbish now so only get if you have a big capacity washing machine.

mycatisannoying · 26/09/2022 16:28

I really like the thought of it, OP, as I hate changing duvet covers with a passion.
However I'm in Scotland, and unconvinced they'd be warm enough.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 26/09/2022 16:36

Sounds like heaven! I toss and turn all night, and invariably the duvet cover and end up not matching the duvet if that makes sense. I'll haul it back over me in the night and end up with just duvet cover and all the duvet down the bottom!

chickensaresafehere · 26/09/2022 16:50

I've got the night owl cotton waffle one & think its great. Paid a bit more for the cotton one as I don't like the synthetic material on the cheaper ones.
I fold mine in thirds & roll it up then feed it into the machine (we have a standard size washer) then put it on a longer wash with an extra rinse at the end. It dries in a couple of hours on the line on a fine day or a bit longer on the clothes maid inside.
I just love it & wouldn't swap back.

mast0650 · 26/09/2022 16:54

Just put a sheet under your normal duvet (with cover) and don't wash it as much

That's what we do.

PixellatedPixie · 26/09/2022 17:05

I have a Night Owl one for my daughter and I love it as she used to twist and bundle the duvet inside the duvet cover but now it’s all one piece. M&S used to have nice ones too. The thin King size one fits in my front loader washing machine.

Wait what. Tell us more about the magical Bulgarian circle duvet covers.

Imagine your duvet cover, but sewn up at the bottom rather than buttons/poppers. Then it has a big circle cut in the middle of the top side.

So rather than having to feed your duvet all the way in from one end, you lay the cover on the bed, put the duvet on top and just push the corners in and give it a quick shake/smooth.

DF has them in lots of colours and will put two on opposite ways up so you have (say) a navy cover with a yellow circle in the middle, or a patterned circle and plain cover or vice versa. I think she tends to change the outer one and leave the inner one on for a couple of washes. I suppose you could just have the white of the duvet showing, but it might not look as nice.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 26/09/2022 18:21

I'd be dubious about washing and drying times - say you spill coffee on it on a Sunday morning. It wouldn't be as easy as changing the sheet. And you'd need more than one as well instead of summer and winter covers, and the fleecy teddy covers are unreal in chilly weather

strawberriesarenot · 26/09/2022 18:26

I wish someone would invent duvet covers that open on 2 sides so you could lie it flat, put on duvet, and button up all around. Saving all that wrestling.

Entwifery · 26/09/2022 18:34

This is what everyone does in America and it works just fine. I personally hate faffing with duvet covers and how there is always baggy fabric in the corners.

coffeepleeease · 26/09/2022 18:35

Love mine! Best thing I've bought in a long time!

DuckBilledFattypus · 26/09/2022 18:37

DC have them. They're nice and light, but took hours to dry. I've put a duvet cover over them now. Which defeats the object.

MyStarBoy · 26/09/2022 18:41

I think it’s a great idea.
One less job to do.

Cleopatra67 · 26/09/2022 18:42

My issue is they’re a bit ugly looking - I like my duvet covers.

MarinoRoyale · 26/09/2022 18:42

I bought one by mistake but really love it, so much easier for me to manage than stiffing a duvet into a cover.

HashtagShitShop · 26/09/2022 18:44

I like the idea of them. However the duvet cover would be much easier to dry than an actual duvet, especially winter thickness. It'd take up much more room and take much longer especially in this weather and if you couldn't hang it up outside. You'd need at least two if no tumble dryer (if they can go in there/if they fit/if you can afford to even run it).

9thlife · 26/09/2022 18:47

Omg I didn’t know these existed.
im buying several

Why would you need two?

Even in winter mine dries in half a day, a few hours in moderate weather and less than an hour in the summer

WonderingWanda · 26/09/2022 19:01

My king-size winter duvet won't fit in my machine so I'd be at the launderette every week which is for more faff than changing a duvet cover. Think I'll still with what I've got. Also I hate sheets with things over them with a passion.

UnbeatenMum · 26/09/2022 19:04

I have a wool duvet which I love and won't be changing but my eldest DD has one of these and it's great for her. Dries in a few hours and means I'm not changing 2 doubles on a regular basis. DD2 uses a weighted blanket otherwise I would have got her one too.
