To think coverless duvets seem like a good idea?

Just go in the washing machine when dirty. Use with a sheet and a bedspread. The thought of no longer wrestling with duvet covers and not having them hanging over the banisters and shower door drying is quite enticing. Anyone got one and would you recommend?

I bought one for my son. They’re great so I’m going to get one too. I do have to make sure I wash it first thing in order for it to be dry by bed time but that’s not been a problem so far. They’re very light weight but warm and my son seems happy with it.

They're good but the downside is that they don't fit in the washing machine and need to be washed and dried in the launderette. Ive got a 9kg drum and a double duvet won't fit. This is a weekly thing ( teenage boy. Go figure).

Which brand do you have?

We got night owl ones and can fit a 10.5 tog super king in our 7kg washing machine, it's tight but it fits and cleans well in there

Katy123g · 26/09/2022 14:43

I accidently ordered one from Aldi online for my DS. Thought I was buying a duvet cover and pillow case because I didn't read the description properly!

When it came I may have been tempted to keep it but it was so so thin. There is no way it would keep anyone warm enough.

Not sure if you can get thicker ones but then I assume it would be tricky fitting it in a normal washing machine.

Sent it back!

bellac11 · 26/09/2022 14:44

Reading the link, they seem to have man made fillings

I wouldnt want to be washing that every week. I love my fresh linen each week on the bed and like to have different covers rotating too.

cookiecreammmpie · 26/09/2022 14:44

Im not sure of the brand but it's a Harry Potter one.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/09/2022 14:45

Surely a coverless duvet is... a duvet? Grin

My DGM still calls them "continental quilts". Grin

I would actually love the sort of duvet covers they have in Bulgaria. They have a circle on the top, so you just have to slide the corners in. A friend has them, and they look so much less faff!

sevenbyseven · 26/09/2022 14:46

They sound great for ease, but surely very uneconomical for washing? To wash these for a household would surely be multiple loads?

Bytrgrewd · 26/09/2022 14:47

Would they be good for a bedwetter whose duvet needs to be washed fairly often?

Not to mention all the landfill from all the dumped duvets.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 26/09/2022 14:55

So the only real advantages are that they fit into a domestic washing machine and you don't have the faff of putting a duvet cover on? Wouldn't it be easier to just have a sheet and then a duvet on top of that with no cover? (Or another coloured sheet on top if what it looks like matters to you.) Personally I like a nice feather duvet max 4.5 tog so I guess this isn't aimed at me.

This is the reason we got our first one, for DD. We then caught the bug and now every bed in the house has one Blush

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/09/2022 14:57

I bought one from M and S and it's brilliant

Essentially yes. I hate layers on the bed, I find they just get tangled and I can't be doing with them, so a coverless duvet that I bung in the wash every week is perfect. It's also good for DD's bed in particular as she has the occasional nappy leak or spills something so we can just stick the whole thing in washing machine and it's washed and dried within two hours.

ReadyForPumpkins · 26/09/2022 15:06

I remember them from the 70s with sheets and blankets. However, I do'nt get why you can't just wash your normal micorfiber duvets. I fit them in washing machine and they dry in 90min too. The only difference I can see is mine is white and these are coloured?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/09/2022 15:07

Why not pyjamas made like puffer jackets and dispense with the duvet completely?

With the added advantage that DP can't hog the duvet.

Hmm, thinking about it, they could be a bit restrictive for some activities. 🤔

Not if you cut a hole... or two

Forgot to say mine was from Fine Bedding Co.

We have them for camping, and they are great (although they melt if you take them round the fire and a spark flies, as DD discovered unfortunately).

However, I don't know if we have an unusually small washing machine, but they don't fit properly into ours with the result they don't move about enough to wash properly. I think ours are king size so maybe double would be ok, but I am reluctantly planning a trip to the laundrette, which is more of a pain than changing the cover.

I agree with this - great for camping because it fits into a bag but I wouldn’t want to be washing it every week because I wouldn’t fit anything else into the machine with it and it takes some effort to pack it into the machine (standard size Zanussi machine). It does dry quickly though on the line. I’ve never washed it in the winter so I’m not sure how long it would take inside.

bellac11 · 26/09/2022 15:11

I dont understand where these drying times come from. Our duvet sets (King size) take longer than some of the quotes here

Or are people talking about tumble drying. We dont have a tumble dryer and I wont get one due to cost and environmental concerns.

EveningOverRooftops · 26/09/2022 15:17

I made DC some yrs ago by quilting a duvet cover over a 4.5 tog duvet because of their additional needs.

one wash load of all DCs bedding and it dries on the heated airer in a day.

I made 3 for DC so we don’t have to stress about getting it dry and in the winter I rotate. The One in contact with skin gets washed. The one on top become bottom layer and a clean on on top. Still only washing one a week.

its certainly made making the beds 100% easier and DC can do it themselves.

Definitely not a company shill, just a lowly slattern who always takes the easy option!

Same!

They honestly dry in a couple of hours on the line. Mine is microfiber and doesn't hold water like a duvet would. It comes out of slightly damp.

Wait what. Tell us more about the magical Bulgarian circle duvet covers.
