To ask you to think twice about eating chicken regularly

Tigofigo · 25/09/2022 09:03

...it's just not sustainable for us to consume as much as we do.

Intensive chicken farming is polluting and destroying our rivers and also potentially causing breathing difficulties and lung issues in those who live near farms spraying chicken / other animal manure as fertilizer.

Really worrying too, at a time when govt are ripping up EU regs on environmental laws that will further destroy our rivers and the animals, plants and people that rely on them (along with the shit already pumped into them...).

great post

That’s the thing. You can feed far more people using less land and resources if we became plant based.

Soon we won’t have a choice anyway. We are killing the planet.

Don't you get vitamin B12 deficiency and have to take supplements

No. I have never eaten meat and I am not deficient. Neither are my family and extended family. But we don't eat Western food.

RainingRubies · 25/09/2022 13:25

gogohmm · 25/09/2022 13:18

@RainingRubies

Remember many of us are cooking for more people, a standard sized supermarket chicken (£4.25 for the cook in the bag one at lidl last week) fed us 1 meal with pickings for the cat. 4 adults plus a veggie one who obviously has a different main.

A larger chicken would not be worth it as they would eat more!

Pork however is my go to, can get 3 meals out of a £10 shoulder

Of course lots of people have larger families. I mentioned the size of ours with that in mind. But the idea that a large chicken can't make one meal simply isn't true, even with 4-5 people, if people are having sensible portions of meat balanced with other foods. I think part of the issue is that many people's idea of a normal portion of meat is scewed. And for leftovers, chicken fried rice or chicken fahitas or chicken soup etc, only a small proportion of the whole meal is chicken meat obviously.

You do realise that a) there are no wolves in the UK and b) not every sheep/deer/goat/whatever that lives where wolves also live are ripped apart by them right? Nature is generally very good a keeping a balance.

But can't say I'm surprised to see this classic strawman argument. It's rolled out all the time. What you are saying is that because some animals would die in gruesome conditions in their natural habit means it's OK for us to breed them, treat them like shit, and slaughter them because some people enjoy the taste of their flesh.

By that logic it you must think it's acceptable to mistreat and kill human children because they also don't fair too well in the "wild"?

I wasnt referring to the UK, it was a theoretical point about wild animals

And yes of course it is ok for humans to eat animals, we are part of the food chain and have been since humans and humanoids evolved

Not sure where mistreatment of children come into it.

Fixyourself · 25/09/2022 13:26

Or we could all just bury our heads in the sand and ignore what’s happening! Seems to have worked for most people so far!
It’s ridiculous that vegans seem extreme but eating this squalid meat is the normal thing to do!

Just a reminder that we are now entering the prime of British lamb season.

British lamb will mostly be grass fed and raised almost entirely outdoors for its entire life.

if you want high quality, sustainable, low mileage protein then choose British lamb.

Shepherds pie for lunch anyone?

Great idea, however (and this doesn’t downplay the welfare aspect) but have you seen the price of lamb? We live in prime sheep country, to feed the three carnivores in our family would be twice at least, the price of chicken where you’d actually get enough to fill you. People buy chicken because it’s cheap protein, lots of people haven’t the luxury of buying expensive meat or organic. Welfare should be paramount, but when it drives up the cost for many it’s not a choice.

lemons44 · 25/09/2022 13:27

YANBU

Nothing natural in meat nowadays anyways. What is natural about the cramming in small cages, debeaking, restricted movement, force feeding, a life in darkness etc. It's not normal.

We've significantly cut our food bill by using beans in chillis, lentils in curries etc. healthier and cheaper.

Lots of people have b12 deficiency. I know several who have to have injections of it. I dont think theyre even vegetarians!
Probably a lot of people should take supplements. Its quite handy now, as lots of people have inadequate diets

I’ve seen studies saying between a third and a half of people take vitamins regularly in the U.K. so I’m not sure what the issue is with vegans taking a supplement. The vitamin market is huge.

A lot of people probably should take vitamins, look on the threads about what people eat and so many must be really lacking in many nutrients. Any diet can be poor.

Children and animals are very different.

Why do you think that?

What is it specifically that makes you think a human life is more valuable to nature than an animal life?

We've put ourselves up on a pedestal because we are self-aware and intelligent. Yet rather than use that intelligence to ensure the planet (the only place that we can physically exist) and all of its inhabitants are protected and cared for we use it to destroy and justify abuse.

The majority of humans are an absolute cancer on the Earth and the sooner we face natural correction the better. It's just a shame that those of us who actually care will be impacted as much as those who don't give a fuck.

QuestionableMouse · 25/09/2022 13:30

I think everyone one on this thread is forgetting that the idea of a carbon footprint was invented by BP.... who of course have a flawless environmental record... 🤔😬🤷🏻‍♀️

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 25/09/2022 13:30

I was vegetarian for 17 years but never for animal welfare reasons. These threads do a good job of alienating people like me from the animal welfare cause.

Yeah, you show those animals!

FusionChefGeoff · 25/09/2022 13:30

ArseMenagerie · 25/09/2022 12:09

There are brilliant vegan/vegetarian chefs/recipes that don’t fall back on lentils tho. Surely that perception is gone? The punishing lentil for every meal vegan option!
There is a path between meat and fake meat AND one that doesn’t have lentils and pulses for every boring meal.

And your protein? Where's that coming from?

Maybe it should be made clearer by the vegans on threads about the vitamin deficiencies it can cause because people may not know this, it seems to get missed in all the educating of meat eaters

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 25/09/2022 13:32

Why do you think that?

Because a human life is more valuable, that's why it's illegal to take a human life but legal to eat animals. Like it or not, animals are lower down on the food chain.

bellac11 · 25/09/2022 13:33

I dont know why lamb is so expensive. Its my favourite meat. I dont eat pork (generally speaking), I dont like chicken that much and out of beef and lamb I love lamb more, but it doesn thalf cost a lot!

RainingRubies · 25/09/2022 13:33

For some people that is about diet, but most people who have B12 injections have them because of pernicious anaemia which is caused by the body being able to process B12 from food, so diet makes no difference to it.

We are top of the food chain, its just the way it is. Humans may well die out, we may not, we're just another animal but we're top of the food chain.

If we werent here it would probably be other carnivores, probably different ones in different regions.

Stopsnowing · 25/09/2022 13:35

Please send along links to protein rich veggie cheap easy to prepare meals that kids will eat

user7845209 · 25/09/2022 13:35

Yes lamb is really expensive and very small portions, we eat it quite a bit as there are only two of us but to feed a family it would cost loads. I don't really like any of the other meat but love lamb

Pinkpeony2 · 25/09/2022 13:39

scrufffy · 25/09/2022 11:49

My person can't have soya. We can't have nuts in the house. Can't have dairy (and the fake cheese makes them vomit). Can't have anything with gluten. Shellfish is off the table and they aren't keen on fish.

I'm sticking with chicken.

Your ‘person’ wtf is that?

Pinkpeony2 · 25/09/2022 13:39

Sounds like you have a slave locked up in the cellar.

lemons44 · 25/09/2022 13:41

@Pinkpeony2 😂😂

tedgran · 25/09/2022 13:43

I do eat chicken, but only buy free range. If we have a takeaway I only have lamb.

MessyBunPersonified · 25/09/2022 13:45

Morals are great if you can afford to have them.

Unfortunately I can't.
