To ask you to think twice about eating chicken regularly

...it's just not sustainable for us to consume as much as we do.

Intensive chicken farming is polluting and destroying our rivers and also potentially causing breathing difficulties and lung issues in those who live near farms spraying chicken / other animal manure as fertilizer.

Really worrying too, at a time when govt are ripping up EU regs on environmental laws that will further destroy our rivers and the animals, plants and people that rely on them (along with the shit already pumped into them...).

'All eggs sold in the UK must be stamped with the method of production: 0=organic, 1= free-range, 2=barn, 3=caged and this must also be stated on the eggs box.'

TheScorpionandtheFrog · 27/09/2022 11:04

Rescue battery hens are usually almost bald as they are sold when they go through moult, as that's when their egg productions drops so much they become uneconomical. Its completely normal for hens to moult at that age, and is not a welfare issue.
Bald patches and injuries are an issue with battery hens.

from what I can gather, hens in organic farms suffer less but with the rare exception, these animals suffer a lot.

Oh my god, just learn to cook it nicely. It’s not hard.

I actually quite like beans and lentils, hot or cold, but some (many) people can’t eat pulses as it upsets their stomach too much, so it’s not really an option for them.

That really isn’t an excuse for most people

meat can be hard to digest for some and has links with bowel cancer

for those with digestion issues - tofu? Soya beans? Making even a few changes 1-2 a week is huge if everyone does it

Well, I don’t know about most people - in my immediate family alone there are two people who can’t eat beans.

I dont need an excuse, chicken is tasty, cheap and we all eat it no fuss, easy to prep, i like the texture - crispy chicken skin is on par with bacon in terms of just how damn good it is
I hate cooking and have no desire to learn a whole new bunch of stuff with a high risk it wont be eaten or liked by me, dh or dd

That's shortsighted I think.

I can't eat Quorn type products. Gives me the raging shits and awful stomach cramps. Quorn can also cause allergic reactions in some people. I can't stand the texture of tofu - it makes me gag.

I get my beef from a fantastic local farm. I eat it maybe twice a month. Chicken I buy from the supermarket and eat again a few times a month. I rarely eat pork and never lamb.

And honestly, someone like my sister who isn't on a lot of money isn't going to mess about buying random stuff and hoping the kids will eat it. They're going to buy the chicken, because they know it isn't going to be wasted.

Newgirls · 27/09/2022 13:39

And yet other countries seem to eat tofu, lentils etc

children in other countries eat tofu and lentils

brits are used to eating cheap meat. It’s a choice.

No, you're OK, I'll carry on eating what I know agrees with me

user6497219 · 27/09/2022 14:06

If it was just a case of not eating meat, maybe more would do it, but it's the pain of having to seek out vegan versions of everything and not being able to eat a lot of other things because an ingredient has come from an animal.

Sure - animals are there for our benefit. They don’t have feelings. Delicious.

You DONT need vegan alternatives for every single meal!!

do none of you ever just have beans on toast or soup and a roll or a bowl of Pasta and veg for your dinner?! Why do you need meat (and there fore meat substitute) in every single meal?!

I was thinking more when you go out for coffee and cake or buy sauces and stuff like that or chocolate.

user6497219 · 27/09/2022 18:24

Hmm, so nice cream tea and scones with jam and cream, what would be the vegan alternative when out, I wonder...

That would be super easy to veganise and you wouldn’t even be able to tell.

Most places I know do a vegan afternoon tea alternative. Have done so for a long time.

user6497219 · 27/09/2022 18:30

I had an expensive vegan ice cream once in error from an ice cream cabinet in a shop it was very dry and not creamy and I had to throw it out

user6497219 · 27/09/2022 18:31

Exactly. People just need to do that a bit more often. So many cuisines are veggie/vegan anyway. Lots only Indian, Thai food. Just make a few switches.

lots of sorbets are vegan. Scones with cream. Well if you can’t live without clotted cream maybe skip the ham sandwich that day?! Make some small changes and it all adds up.

user6497219 · 27/09/2022 19:20

i eat meat very rarely as I don't really like it, it is all the other things that you have to forgo for the rest of your life that is the problem, sorbet is hardly a tasty substitute for some proper ice cream, I won't be skipping ham sandwiches as I never eat ham, I prefer cream cheese. I don't think I could live without clotted cream or nice milk chocolate and proper cake.
