For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

So my clothes Airer picking itself Up 2 foot from the floor and throwing itself across my living room in front of me and my terrified seven-year-old daughter isn’t enough evidence according to you? Sorry I didn’t get my phone out and film it - was too busy screaming crying and running out my flat with a traumatised 6 year old who still has nightmares about it

Ok I’ll give you a pass, but given phones/cameras are ubiquitous, you’d think someone, somewhere in the world would have captured some supernatural goings on on camera by now.

Treaclemine · 24/09/2022 17:02

Ouija board or the glass with cards, yes it is moved by unconscious (probably) movements by one or other of the participants, and everyone else adds to the movement. From experience. But from that experience, I also know that some or other of the participants want it to be scarey, and unleash dark stuff from their minds, and it probably is not a good idea to do it. They will prevent anyone trying to counteract the dark. But it's all internal, and best left there.

In fairness, I was poo-poohing all the 'woo' stuff earlier on in the thread.

But my OH and I have just done an 'experiment' and made a makeshift ouija board using the back of a Shreddies box and a bottle top.

I was really surprised. Beelzebob appeared and said we were messing with powers we didn't understand. All the mugs in started flying out of the cupboard and smashing on the floor. Then, a pigeon flew in and shat on my head.

If only I'd thought to reach for my phone!! But I couldn't reach it because my bowels had completely given way. OP, if you're still reading, it's probably best left.

ThreeRingCircus · 24/09/2022 17:12

I wouldn't - albeit it was a board game, the mind plays tricks on you

I agree. I'm a sceptic but I wouldn't do one as it would have the potential to play on my mind afterwards.

Thoughts and prayers for your bowels. I hope they make a full recover 🤣

I would but I’ve never had any luck with them. Even at St Briavals with an expert got nothing convincing.

You wouldn't be using fucking laughing emojis if you had just encountered the fury of Beelzebob.

Was he at least good looking? Also, did he disappear in a ball of fire or just shuffle awkwardly out the front door on his hooves?

Chloefairydust · 24/09/2022 17:49

I wouldn’t mess with one, it’s opening up a portal and you don’t know what could be invited to come through, or even follow you home.

You could try a spirit box or one of those machines that pick up unusual electromagnetic energy. These are tools used to sense and communicate with spirits that are already in the castle, I think that would be interesting. But don’t open up any new portals… (trust me I watch a lot of paranormal stuff on TV so I must be an expert by now 😂)

JustJustWhy · 24/09/2022 17:55

DWMoosmum · 24/09/2022 16:06

Just don't do it. You only have to watch the Exorcist, which is based on a true story (albeit a boy in real life) to see what damage they can do.

😂😂😂

...ditto Poltergeist and the Amityville Horror (just as two off the top of my head). They are of course absolutely true, 100%. So careful about pushing a glass on a piece of wood because before you know it you'll be masturbating with a crucifix and disappearing "into the light" via your wardrobe.

This is true. Last time I opened up my portals fucking Rod Stewart followed me home. Very untidy house guest is rod Stewart.

Banana2079 · 24/09/2022 09:27

Don’t
just please don’t
lots of people don’t believe in spirits, I am a sane person who currently works in the courts .. being sane is a requirement

i had get the priest to my house last year
the things that were happening in my house were the kind of things you only see in a ghost movie
on one occasion my clothes airer threw itself through the air on its own
sinister growls , woke up to furniture ripped overnight , teeth marks on me and DD
The headquarters of the spiritualist church is directly opposite my front door not sure if that was the cause .. but if you manifest something nasty it will follow you home

Of course you will have documented all of this and kept photographic evidence....

About as concerned as I am about all the rest of it....

Maybe someone could unleash Beelzebob in there. Or maybe they already did.

I'm more curious as to why she didn't photograph any of it afterwards. I mean nobody expects her to film it while it's actually happening but bite marks don't just vanish instantly. You'd think you'd take pictures afterwards of something so inexplicable and bizarre as bite marks all over you and your daughters bodies and torn up furniture, but alas nothing....

Possibly. He was definitely called Beezebob, btw. It was hard to hear over the smashing crockery, and the tornado, but I asked him to spell it, and that's what he said.

Beelzebub's his brother. Apparently you have to buy the official Hasbro set if you want to get him.

Mercenaries. You used to be able to get him if you collected enough cereal box tokens.

I would be if I believed it. You can’t tell me someone very sensible woke up with bite marks (and bite marks on their daughter?) and called a priest. I’d be photographing it, going to the police so they could search my house and get me medically checked to find out what had bitten me not calling father ted.

jetadore · 24/09/2022 18:51

@thedancingbear I’m not surprised that happened to you, as my dear great grandmother used to say (via the ouija board), when you poo-pooh too long the woo stuff, eventually the woo-stuff poo-poos onto you.

GuyMontag · 24/09/2022 19:08

roaringmouse · 24/09/2022 19:19

I've 'played' the Ouija board quite a few times and had some interesting, scary and funny experiences.

One time, the police turned up and peered at my friends and I through the back window as we were playing. When we opened the back door, they said they'd had a call from the landline registered to our address (this was a long time before mobile phones were a thing) but our phone wasn't able to make outgoing calls, only incoming.

Another time, things being spelt out on the board were so funny, we were all in stitches, and it was such a different humour to any of the people that were playing. It was like we had a comedian with us.

I can't explain either of these things, and there were others. I'm not sure what I believe. I decided not to play again, at some point in my twenties, because I did find it unsettling. I do sometimes want to though.
