to think teachers shouldn't swear

ok ds is no angel and a normal nearly 16 year old. but i was a bit shocked that the teacher screeched at him and used the f word.
I wasn't there so can not judge the situation. but just thought that a teacher would have enough vocabulary to not have to resort to swearing.(not slagging teachers of here as i have only admiration for the ones on here)

F word is a big no no

I will confess to the odd, far milder swear word with my sixth formers.

but not Fuck, not ever

harleyd · 24/01/2008 16:58

lol shoes, i just swore at your ds too

but, no yanbu

Maidamess · 24/01/2008 16:58

No teacher should swear! They should show restraint! I would be appalled if my child was spoken to like that.

bigbumhole · 24/01/2008 17:00

I think its totally appalling, no matter how heated the situation got. No way is the F word acceptable in any form coming from a teacher.

I would make a serious complaint against the member of staff concerned.

(I come from a family of teachers BTW)

MrsArchieTheInventor · 24/01/2008 17:01

I suppose if the teacher swears then he can't bollock your son for swearing back!

On a serious note, teachers should have more restraint and a wider grasp of retorts and more suitable words when dealing with pupils. I'd say swearing in front of pupils is classed as 'not a good thing to do' in the teacher training handbook.

2shoes · 24/01/2008 17:05

thats what I thought. that they would have loads of "good" word they could use.
I am not going to complain as fingers crossed ds is going to remember to ask to be moved out of her class. the annoying thing was he was staying late(off his own back) to catch up on course work)

I like to try to defend teachers usually, but am drawing a blank here. No excuse, at all , ever, for the F word.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/01/2008 17:16

No, it is never acceptable for any school staff to use the f word. No excuse.

Reallytired · 24/01/2008 18:49

Teachers are human and make mistakes especially when tired.

Teachers shouldn't swear, and sixteen year old boys should not behave like little sh!ts.

End of

2shoes · 24/01/2008 19:04

how do you know he was being a little shit
My question was about teachers swearing not whether my son was a shit.

Would you swear at your senior management? If not, why not show the same restraint when dealing with a 16yo?

betterhalf · 24/01/2008 19:08

I don't think the teacher should have done that. It shows a lack of self control. He should be professional enough to cope even if the kids are being vile.

dramaqueen · 24/01/2008 19:14

I don't think senior managers in a business are faced with some things 16 year olds can come out with, though. I have never said the f word at a student but have been goaded to nearly say it.

MAMAZON · 24/01/2008 19:14

i don;t think that the odd lesser swear words are much to be worried about. in fact i remember it was the teachers that would let the odd "bloody" or "shit" into the convo were the ones we actually really liked.

it made us feel as though we were being treated as an adult.
but no i do not feel it appropriate to scream anything in a childs face and certainly not the F word

juuule · 24/01/2008 19:18

Made you feel like you were being treated as an adult to have teachers drop swear words into the conversation

juuule · 24/01/2008 19:20

Aaah Dramaqueen, but goaded or not you were professional enough not to rise to the bait whether it was a 16yo or senior manager doing the goading.

OLDroot · 24/01/2008 19:22

of teachers can swear - especially with/to over 16 year olds - and espeicially in my subject

melpomene · 24/01/2008 19:24

I think a better analogy would be if you were working in a shop and a customer was being unreasonable; however ridiculous they are being, you shouldn't swear at them.

juuule · 24/01/2008 19:26

Much better analogy

OLDroot · 24/01/2008 19:27

not really the same imo.

teaching post 16 is very different - more relaxed,

betterhalf · 24/01/2008 19:28

I think there's a difference between general swear words and the f word. It's not right for that word to be used.

Blandmum · 24/01/2008 19:28

what do you teach, oldroot?

deaconblue · 24/01/2008 19:30

I think that's terrible. Would never swear AT any pupil. I have occasionally used mild swear words in discussion with older students but to direct an aggressive word like that at a student is unforgivable no matter how non angelic the student is imo

Bouncingturtle · 24/01/2008 19:30

I remember one of my teachers said "Shit!" and we were all

Using the F word is utterly inexcusable though.
YANBU!

notnowbernard · 24/01/2008 19:31

A (very) humourous story:

My friend is a primary school teacher. She was form teacher for Reception this particular year. Their reading project was 'We're going on a bear hunt'. Can you guess where this is going?

Cue my friend announcing to her class that they were, in fact, "Going on a bear...." (You can fill in the blanks!)
