No

HowVeryBizarre · 23/09/2022 13:16

It would be illegal where I live, it is a hotter country than the UK though so there are often radio ads in Summer reminding people never to leave children unattended in cars.

OriginalUsername3 · 23/09/2022 13:18

Only in a private car park or if I could see the car. If I had to park on the street and couldn't see the car then no.

Twokidsanddone · 23/09/2022 13:25

Not if I couldn't see the car at all times. When I drop DS1 off or pick him up, DS2 comes in with me. If he's sleeping or not. I can't see the car from the nursery. Wouldn't be able to hear him either. Not worried about kidnapping so much, but I used to work somewhere where we were forever putting calls out for car owners because of car park accidents. Cars getting hit when parked is a lot more common than you'd think. Sometimes just a scratch, sometimes more. A friends car was written off in a car park

bumbledeedum · 23/09/2022 13:26

If I wouldn't leave my door open I wouldn't leave my baby in there. So small private car park where I can see the car, yes, public road out of sight, no. I'm pretty lax about a lot of things but I wouldn't do this, I'd be worried about baby waking up and being upset or being delayed and unable to get back to the car quickly.

C152 · 23/09/2022 13:27

No, never.

Topgub · 23/09/2022 13:28

@YellowTreeHouse

Theres a reason its not illegal to leave children unattended.

Because every situation is different abd requires a different risk assessment.

Leaving a baby in a car for a few minute does not show lack of sound judgement and does absolutely not warrant social service involvement.

Any more than any other risk assessment a parent makes.

People have lost all common sense in their need to rush to superior judgement.

inheritanceshiteagain · 23/09/2022 13:34

No. Have left them outside the house in the drive asleep, but I can see them from the window. Never if out of sight

DuesToTheDirt · 23/09/2022 13:42

Typical MN paranoia on this thread.

  • Car might catch fire? I've never seen such a thing in 50+ years on this earth.
  • Baby might choke, in 3 minutes? Dunno, but what if you're driving where there is nowhere to stop? Or asleep yourself? Do you all stay awake to watch your sleeping baby? Do you take your sleeping baby into the loo with you just in case? What if you go into the garden to hang up washing?
  • Baby might get snatched? I suppose they might. Chance of someone with this intent seeing the baby there, getting into the car, getting away with the baby - miniscule

engalaaand · 23/09/2022 12:09

I don't think it's likely my baby will choke to death in 3 minutes in his car seat.

When it happened while I was driving and he choked, he had to wait much longer than 3 minutes before I could pull over safely.

He's asleep upstairs right now, so you're telling everyone I need to be constantly worried he's going to choke to death? NO that's ridiculous and it's a way to give a new mother extreme anxiety. Babies can be left for a few minutes to sleep in peace, in a bed, or in a car seat- without you worrying they'll choke to death.

In the case of a cot, they can be left, god forbid, for their nap time or at night time too. Without you constantly worried they'll choke to death. In their car seat, they should not sleep in it for an extended period of time ( especially not newborns, where 30 minutes is the maximum ). However, it's unlikely that my baby will choke to death in 3 minutes in the car seat. My point is, he may be in the car seat for more than 3 minutes at other times where I can't get to him.

3 minutes X 5 = 15 minutes a week. That's just drop off, do you do that for pick up as well? That's 30 minutes a week. How many weeks a year are you doing the school run? You do the maths

30hourschildcare · 23/09/2022 14:21

Also it's easier for them to turn their head when they are in their cot if they are sick. Not so easy in a car seat, and they are upright Confused

Stupid argument.

Your post is remarkably glib and patronising.
I might leave one of

my children for half an hour at home when the are older or if I pop to the corner who bit
a baby in a car? No. It might not be illegal but in my mind that presupposes the average sentient being would not leave a baby in a locked car whilst they took their child to nursery leaving said vehicle out of sight for a period of what is estimated I believe to be three minutes.
In that context it is entirely legitimate to expect SS might at least offer some support or advice as it displays basic incompetence

Topgub · 23/09/2022 15:24

@Whiskeypowers

Older?

How old?

I do leave my older children at home for longer periods and they go out to play unsupervised

Ss would be welcome to come do an assessment

HappyAsASandboy · 23/09/2022 16:05

Yes, I would and I have. I leave them sleeping or awake and happy in their car seats (strapped in when too little to be trusted to stay in their seats) and pop into school/nursery to drop off, into petrol station to pay, into corner shop to buy bread (as long as no queue etc. Basically if it will be under 5 mins, I think they're safe in a locked car in a busy place.

What I wouldn't do is leave them anywhere where other people wouldn't find them if for any reason I didn't come back. I wouldn't leave them in the car on my drive and cross over to the postbox, because if I got run over, no one would know they were in the car alone, for example.

My test is always what would happen if for any reason I didn't come back, rather than worrying about the very small chance they'll be abducted from a locked car, or something will hit my stationary car with enough force to hurt them etc etc.

30hourschildcare · 23/09/2022 17:33

@CallMeLinda I'm not a baby Confused

The chance of the baby getting snatched isn't miniscule if it's left in a parked car at the same time every day, on the same road. Someone might notice this pattern and take a chance.

londonrach · 23/09/2022 17:38

No not unless I have visual on car all the time! If visual maybe

Topgub · 23/09/2022 17:39

@Mama234567

Yes it is.

The chance of any child being abducted by a stranger is miniscule

Willing to bet they’re not babies or incapable of understanding basic health and safety / what to do in an emergency etc

of course you’d like to tell me it’s all subjective
no not with a tiny baby 🤣

35965a · 23/09/2022 19:28

I would never leave a baby in a car. Bumps with parked cars happen.

AYearOfCushions · 23/09/2022 19:33

I wouldn't.

It would be rare that these things would happen but I'm a what if person.

Car gets hit.

Something happens to you in that short time and no one realises baby is in the car.

Someone is watching and knows your routine and how long baby is unattended.
