Do you think Putin will use nuclear weapons?

I'm getting very nervous about the ramping up of the war and Putin's calling up of 300,000 reservists. It feels like this is a major escalation. I know that any use of nuclear weapons would mean instant retaliation but it no longer feels like a MAD scenario as it almost feels now like he wants a scorched earth and has nothing to lose and doesn't care that it would destroy everything.

Well Ukrainians have been saying all along we are in WW3 but we don't know it yet. Maybe that's true then let's get cracking if that's the case. But I don't know what that means or whether we in Europe and the west are ready for it or have the appetite for sacrifice way beyond what we are used to. Covid will be a walk in the park by comparison.

Parkingmoan1 · 21/09/2022 23:39

Why hasn't somebody from his circle bumped him off yet? Surely there must be some inner descent. The guy is barking mad.

blueshoes · 21/09/2022 23:42

We are not in WW3. We may be if Russia gets to keep Ukraine (not that they can any more, ha) because Russia will not stop at Ukraine. Which is why the Baltic states support Ukraine so fervently and Sweden and Finland have now asked to join NATO. Russia is right at their doorstep and it is them next.

Ukraine just needs more weapons to push Russia out. Ukraine is going to stop WW3 once Russia is a spent force. They are fighting the war for us so we must support them. It is their blood that is being spilt for Europe.

Meili04 · 21/09/2022 23:43

No he's trying to save face how embarrassing the mighty Russian military force couldn't defeat puny Ukraine in a short war. Everyone now thinks Russia's a joke combat wise anyway. He's acting like Kim Jong Un and North Korea. I don't believe he will use them, we might hear about Putin falling out of a window soon.

Much as I detest the guy, I don't want Putin dead. He is over but what is waiting in the wings could be even worse. This problem is not going to go away with Putin. The problem is Russia.

Getofftheladder · 21/09/2022 23:45

No, he knows he can’t afford war against the rest of the world. His army is struggling as it is.

vera99 · 21/09/2022 23:45

When you are the boss of bosses mafia style then it is very difficult to bump someone off. Saddam Hussein, Hitler, and Stalin survived for many years despite causing the deaths of millions. If you move you had better have a chance of success or you are dead meat and the cronies that surround him probably realise that they go down with the ship - Macbeth-like.

All causes shall give way: I am in blood
Stepp'd in so far that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er:

I knew the queens funeral would rattle him. The thought of every country, all these leaders gathering and praising this woman when who will be remembered positively in history and that deep down he knows he won’t be because of what he has done. I thought he might reflect on that and give pause for thought but he’s done the opposite.

What I really can’t get my head around is how much they hate Britain and Europe. Calling us the west. I just don’t understand it because they are the west too. I know they don’t see themselves as that but if I am categorising them they are going in the Europe, USA, Britain box as opposed to the China, Asia or Africa box. It’s bizarre.

Parkingmoan1 · 21/09/2022 23:46

Ah you're a better woman than me, blue. I definitely do want the fucker dead.

I can't help but think back to the news some years ago when senior ISIS members were taken out in a targeted drone strike. POOF, gone. Just like that. Minimal fallout.

They made it look so easy.

We aren’t in WW3. Two countries are at war, it’s tragic and horrendous but it happens elsewhere around the world and no one says WW3.

pollyglot · 21/09/2022 23:49

DH thinks not. He says Russian engineering is crap, and vastly underfunded for decades. I'm not convinced. He's got his back to the wall, and he's a vain, delusional madman. Glad we moved to a remote part of the most remote country in the world, though.

thehill.com/policy/international/598459-zelensky-world-war-iii-may-have-already-started/

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview that World War III “may have already started” as the embattled leader pleads with the U.S. and the West to take more drastic measures to aid Ukraine’s defense against Russia.

The Ukrainian president responded to a question from NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt about whether he’s worried about concerns from the Biden administration that certain actions could trigger conflict between nuclear-armed powers that could lead to World War III.

“Nobody knows whether it may have already started and what is the possibility of this war, in case Ukraine will fall,” Zelensky said in translated remarks.

sagalooshoe · 21/09/2022 23:51

Probably. Stupid old twat.

Sixtyfourteen · 21/09/2022 23:59

Sick of all this gung-ho rubbish. Nuclear war would be the end of everything for all of us. And for many it would be a slow and unimaginably terrible death. The end for innocent wildlife too. There needs to be negotiation to look at face-saving options for Russia.

There's a great TikTok account called "countdaedalus" - he's a very rational (albeit a little bit grumpy!) guy and calmly and logically describes the Ukraine war and any potential outcomes. What many people don't realise is that there are satellites constantly watching Putin's rockets. If the hatch was so much to open, the retaliation would be be global. It's also not just up to it Putin - there is a process in launching nuclear weapons and a number of generals need to be on board for it to happen.

Also he really isn't stupid - he has a lot to lose with nuclear war and so does China (his closest ally). For example China has number of cities protected by a HUGE dam - a simple missile attack there could put millions of Chinese people underwater.

Please try not to to worry and don't read the news! You just need a quick daily glance to be well informed - don't obsess over it. Putin is doing really badly in the Ukraine war and is just trying to save face and look tough.

Putin is very unlikely to use his Strategic Rocket Forces against the Ukraine.

The risk is that he uses a short-range tactical nuclear weapon, which could be deployed using artillery, short-range rockets, or cruise missiles. These wouldn't be detected by satellite until they detonated. It's would place UN/NATO in a very difficult position in determining a response that didn't lead to rapid escalation.

I don't use Tiktok, but there are a lot of informed commentators on Twitter that have been discussing developments in Ukraine since this started.

Whammyyammy · 22/09/2022 00:11

I doubt he has as many nukes as he says, and the ones he has probably don't work.

The Russian army, navy and Air force are a laughing stock, if he dared to fire one nuke Russia would be flattered by Western missiles that work...and Pukin knows this.

Russia is losing, the 300k consriots will soon die

Ha, I said the exact same this morning. About the Ukraine situ, not Gousto. 2 days ago this would barely have got a mention on the news.

Sixtyfourteen · 22/09/2022 00:17

More gung-ho crap. As if anyone wants to kill the whole Russian population. And as if that could even be achieved without the resulting fall-out destroying the rest of the world too.

Mollyshoe · 22/09/2022 00:19

No. His words today indicate he was bluffing last time he said and I think he’s bluffing now.

Nobody wants to kill the whole Russian population. I think you might be getting ahead of yourself there.

Mollyshoe · 22/09/2022 00:21

There were lots of Ukraine stories during the mourning period they were just bunked right down the news agenda because of the queen.

ukraine staged an astounding fight back capturing much ground back. It was huge news everywhere else.

that’s why putin’s throwing a tantrum. He’s losing

bluetongue · 22/09/2022 00:25

Whenever I get worried about Putin using nukes I think of the term ‘Willy waving’ and instantly feel better. Not that the whole situation isn’t serious, of course it is but I like a bit of dark humour so the thought of Putin waving his Willy around puts a (slightly horrified) smile on my face.

Agree. I was getting Ukraine news. That is because I wasn't primarily following UK-based news. The Queen's funeral just pushed everything else out, but Ukraine is there if you scroll there. There is no conspiracy or slow news day. And Ukraine is making a lot of strides on the battlefield, lots especially in the East. Ukraine has a news blockout on what is happening in the South. It is happening. Sad to say for Putin.

You mean like what Russia did to flatten Ukrainian cities one by one? Not sure what you mean.
