Curtseying and bowing...

Time to stop it, surely?

I could kind of understand it while the Queen was alive, as she was of a different era and used to it, probably considering it part and parcel of being the monarch.

But now? Have we not moved on? It just seems inappropriate and demeaning.

I would never curtesy to anyone.

I find this photo nauseating!

Have you been told to do it personally?
No? Then I wouldn't let it bother you.
Each to their own.

Well said

If you do choose to curtsy, it doesn't need to be ridiculously deep. It's just a quick bob. Same for the bow, it's just a small neck bow, like a slightly larger nod. You saw lots of people doing it when they were at the Queen's lying in state.

Or shake hands if you prefer. That's absolutely fine.

It annoys me that the men do a head nod and the women do a full curtsey. If women curtsey then men should bow from the waist.

Thanks but I am aware. I wouldn't curtsey or nod. I would only shake hands if necessary (ie the same situation that I'd shake hands with anyone else)!

YANBU. If people were bowing or curtsying to me I’d be absolutely mortified. Same as people using their lord & lady titles 🤮

mamabear715 · 11/12/2022 13:11

I'd love a Lady title, @DinosaurDuvet :-)
Except - oh, wait.. I'd have to be dressed properly at all times & not in jeans & converse..

No one can be forced to do it; I wouldn't. If I ever crossed paths with the King I'd just say 'Hello Charles' and shake hands. He warrants the same courtesy or respect than any person on the street, but nothing more IMO.

AuntieMarys · 11/12/2022 13:59

It's utterly ridiculous to bow and scrape to the royals.

I’d love it. And I’d absolutely love being Lady Toes, being Dame Blossom would be even better.

SomeBeings · 11/12/2022 16:27

Imagine what type of person you must be to 'allow' other people to be so subservient to you that they are prepared to bow or curtesy ( obviously not including cultures where people bow to each other). You would have to be really self important.

If I was a royal I would ask that people stop the tradition. It's old fashioned and weird.

SomeBeings · 11/12/2022 16:27

Titles such as lady and lord etc are just as ridiculous

@tulips27 I was at an event at one of the Royal residences recently. The instruction to the guests was that they can bow or curtsey - there was definitely nothing specified that men should bow and ladies curtsey and I didn't get the impression that either were compulsory.
