Car parked on my drive!

Name change because this is very outing! Just popped out for ten minutes, come home and there’s a car parked on my drive! I live in a busy walking area, but there’s tons of street parking available, so no idea why they’ve used my drive rather than using that. Good news is, I’ve parked them in 😁 bad news is, none of my neighbours (two houses) can get their cars on the drive now and I’m guessing it’s one of their friends 😞

I’ve attached a diagram (of course!) but I’m crap at drawing so it’s not great. I’m house 1, and the X is the random car parked on my drive. Neighbours are 2 and 3 and have their own drives/parking spaces (both empty). My car is the * so it’s blocking everyone at the moment!

Well that's 5 minutes of my life I'm not getting back. I'm so glad I didn't see this thread when it was started Grin

Out of curiosity- can you call police for such thing? It's genuine question, no one parks on my drive, I just nEeD tO KnOw :D

I’m not sure. If they’re blocking your access/egress to your property, then you can.

but I think if they’re actually parked on your property, not on a public road, the police can’t do anything and you have to go to civil court to get it removed.

I called the police when I was blocked in my parking space. They said they’ll do things if you’re blocked in ( they found phone number for car owner and phoned him) When drive was blocked by car on road and removal van couldn’t get near the house they’d only tell me the owner lived between number x and number y. I had to walk round asking if anyone owned said car.

Probably not neighbours friends if the neighbours aren't in. Likely a cheeky walker. You know the law op, start drinking. 😂

Presume this is so that she won't be able to move her car because of drink-driving? If so, brilliant! 😂

Lunificent · 20/09/2022 17:01

You need a contingency in place for the next time you need to pick up the children during a parking thread.

RobertsRadio · 20/09/2022 17:07

Oh Op, you must try harder on your next fake parking thread. 0/10.

DWMoosmum · 20/09/2022 17:11

Sadly, anyone can park on your drive and there nothing you can do about it legally. It comes down to a civil matter rather than legal, so you could get into trouble by having it removed etc.

I'd also block it in as then they will need to knock on your door to ask you to move. Maybe you could be 'temporarily unavailable!', but then I guess you don't know of any extenuating circumstances.

Sorry everyone! Got home and the car was gone 😠

What a let down!

Cillery · 20/09/2022 17:20

Just a comment that the Honda Jazz is a very good car! Except when it’s parked on your drive by a moron!

PrtScn · 20/09/2022 17:26

I had a car half parked across my drive once. I recognised it from another street because it had been left for weeks. When it hadn't moved overnight, I figured it was going to be there for the long haul so I checked if it had VED, MOT etc. It had neither, so I got my least favourite lipstick out and wrote "Tax me" on the bonnet and took the dog for a walk before work. As I was returning home I just caught it getting reversed down the road in the next street. I often wonder how long it took them to get the lipstick off.

PuzzledObserver · 20/09/2022 17:41

Well, now that they’ve got away with it once, OP, there’s a good chance they will use you again. So what you need is a series of escalating notes to be deployed on their windscreen. Take photos of their car on your property and keep a record of date and time.

Start with a polite “You have parked on private property. Please do not park here again,” then progressing to “This is private property. You have previously been warned about parking here. Any repetition will result in legal action.”

If they take no notice, then you can get notices which are very hard to remove from windscreens.

The top level is to sign up with a parking enforcement company, put signs up, and then send photos of the offending vehicle to the company - who will then pursue them for the £85 they implicitly agreed to pay when they parked on your drive with its clearly-displayed notice saying that parking costs £85.

It’s a while since I looked into this, but there appeared to be two types of scheme. One where you pay for the signage and get a cut of the fees, another where you get the signage free and the company keep the fee. But you don’t want to rent your drive out for parking, do you? You just want to be able to use it yourself.

Kazibar · 20/09/2022 18:14

Id leave a little note on both the blocking car and your neighbours cars, the latter could say something like “Hi Andy, I came home tonight to find a car that I don’t recognise parked in my driveway.

if they are visiting you, i of course accept that they need to park somewhere but I need to park my own car there for the school/work run tomorrow. I tried knocking on your door to have quick chat but you appeared to be out.

I don’t want to make too big a thing out of this. Hope you and XXX are doing well”

or say “fuck it” and open that bottle!

fetchacloth · 20/09/2022 18:27

YANBU and tough luck if it's one of your neighbours' friends🙄

Sorry everyone! Got home and the car was gone 😠

Should have got someone to give you a lift on the school run lol.

Tiani4 · 20/09/2022 18:55

I think you were right to leave and do what you needed to and not to start drinking at 12 midday when you have DCa to pick up and look after! Even if MNers would love you to!!

What a CF parking on your drive - that's so intrusive and "clearly not on" (said in a very indignant British voice!!)

Hopefully they won't repeat it, but is there anyway you can fit a gate to your driveway? If the CF starts to make a habit of it?

IGetAParkingThread · 20/09/2022 18:56

@RobertsRadio if it was fake I’d have made it much more exciting 🤷🏼‍♀️ Unfortunately I’ve spent half my day not working and looking out the window for no reason. If it happens again I’ve arranged to borrow a family members sit on lawnmower. Can leave that out for hours and it won’t block the neighbours cars from getting past 😁 it also has the bonus that I can’t drive it so it could be there for days before they can come and collect it

OP posts:
Tiani4 · 20/09/2022 19:02

My fear is that if CF starts to park on my drive or across it that they will keep doing it!

When we had roadworks for what became a 18 day road closure for emergence repairs to water pipes a few doors down from my house , lots of CFs parked across my driveway!!! Not even my neighbours who couldn't get to their drives (as I let them park on my driveway ..)

It was really upsetting and my son caught a couple MEN and said "you can't leave your car blocking my disabled mum in, unless you want it towed away" (they did move as he's a rather authoritative 20 year old who stood there with his phone out ready to report to police) (police will only move cars if they block access to highway for cars on the drive)

Tiani4 · 20/09/2022 19:08

7 cars parked across my driveway entrance over that period but plenty of parking places 10m up the road for next 100m!! ShockHmmAngry

But I'd be incensed if anyone parked in my driveway without permission especially a random car!!

And I'm happy for neighbours to ask me and to park on occasion by arrangement when they have lots of visitors

If it was a random car my secret weapon is a toddler with sun cream on their arms who would invariably rub up against it (whilst playing out front on my driveway - so not handprints and finger prints ). And also my cats sit on warm cars leaving little muddy paw prints! (my neighbours don't mind cat paw prints 🐾 !) lolZ Try getting that sun cream smudges off your car paintwork, if you pee me off!!

Tiani4 · 20/09/2022 19:10

(Sun cream smudging is reserved for repeat offenders , after I discovered how hard it is to get off car paintwork) (and that's easy to show they parked it illegally without permission and no intention to cause damage, also how do they prove it?)

LesLavandes · 20/09/2022 19:15

Of course it was gone when you went out. Boring

itsnotmeitsu · 20/09/2022 21:47

We have 24 hr access over a shared drive (semi-detached property). Our neighbour makes sure we're not blocked in. There's not much road parking where we are. We needed to go to an appointment and couldn't get off the drive because there was a car parked on our driveway in a way that meant we couldn't get past it. Knocked on neighbours' doors and others; nobody able to help because they didn't know who the car belonged to. After 45 minutes a young girl came wandering up to get in the car. She said 'There were no spaces left to park'.
