Thoughts ?

Diana definitely touched more hearts than the queen.

Diana definitely touched more hearts than the queen.

That's just bizarre. Rubbish. She was patron of a good number of charities, there are photos of her with AIDS patients and sick children and yes once she died people did think she could be Queen of their hearts, as she had requested.

But Elizabeth was queen for 70 years. She travelled the world and touched so, so many people. It's a different order of magnitude. Diana's impact was just a shadow of what Elizabeth has done.

It already is.

Diana was really disliked in the period leading up to her death. I'm convinced it was guilt-laden virtue signalling and massive hypocrisy. The morning she died I was on a cross channel ferry. I went and bought the paper - from the day before - it was really attacking her. That evening when we docked I got the same paper but from that day. 'farewell put English rose' on the cover. Total turnaround. I wish I had kept both as nobody believes me. And my mum, like half the country, insists she never said all the anti Diana stuff she did. Personally I didn't like Diana, before or after. Still a tragedy irrespective of that though.

This.
I believe you, I remember it very well how Diana was being slated left right and centre by the press in the months leading to her death and these same hypocrites went and laid flowers outside Kensington Palace ! I agree about the 'guilt trip'.

JenniferBarkley · 19/09/2022 08:52

Now now. It doesn't matter whose is bigger.

The most important thing is that the size of their funerals is compared.

Hmm
FlamingoQueen · 19/09/2022 08:52

The Queen is having a State funeral. The last State funeral was Winston Churchill’s so yes, it will be bigger than Diana’s.

Oh dear god . The queen was THE QUEEN. Of course her funeral will be bigger than Diana's.

PuttingDownRoots · 19/09/2022 08:57

Admittedly i was only 11... but I could tell you thing about Diana's funeral.

This one children will remember. Day off school, stuff done in school. Jubilee celebrations not long ago. Hundreds of thousands queuing through the night to see the coffin.

powershowerforanhour · 19/09/2022 08:59

"Dr Christian Barnard touched more hearts than both combined."

😄Although Diana did get to tog up in scrubs, go into an aseptic operating theatre and have a gawk at a heart surgery so she actually got closer to touching a heart than HMTQ.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 19/09/2022 09:07

Personally, I think Diana's funeral was ridiculously over the top for a woman who was no longer royal. Regardless of my feelings towards her (ambivalent, incidentally) the whole thing was far greater than it should have been had it not been for the public's hysteria.

VestaTilley · 19/09/2022 09:14

Yes of course it will be! She was the Sovereign.

Diana’s was a ceremonial funeral, The Queen’s is the first State funeral since Sir Winston Churchill’s in the 1960s - it’ll be massive.

toomuchlaundry · 19/09/2022 09:26

For those saying Diana courted media attention I remember thinking after her death she was featured in the tabloids nearly every day for at least a year after she died, so her being in the papers wasn’t always down to her

BloodyHellKen · 19/09/2022 09:36

The whole Diana thing with some people is just bizarre. More so because it's so long since she died.
Diana wasn't much older that me so I very clearly remember the wedding, births, divorce, death etc. I thought the obsession was weird at the time but it's downright crazy now and don't get me started on the whole Princess of Hearts schmaltz 🤮
Diana did many good things in her life re: charitable support and raising public awareness to landmines and AIDS but she was not the Queen. She didn't give 70 years of public service so why should her funeral compare?

PoseyFlump · 19/09/2022 09:36

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/09/2022 04:28

Three days before Diana died, my grandfather passed from cancer at 64.

He almost died the first time he was in active service during WWII. As soon as he was allowed he re-enlisted into the Navy and then almost died again. We didnt know this until after he passed, he never spoke of it.

My Grandmother started symptoms of her life limiting illness in her early 30's. He worked 12 hour shifts on the railways and then came home and cooked and cleaned and cared for their five kids and her, who by the time he had to leave work couldnt walk or toilet herself. Caring for her was his priority and thats why he left early and they had to watch every penny.

He passed 18 months after she did, from the cancer he knew he had but didnt want to leave her to get it treated as he just wanted to see her safely out of the world and join her shortly afterwards.

Who deserved the streets lined for them more?

What an amazing man. The world is full of unsung heroes.

I'm not a royalist and have little respect for the current lot but I think the Queen was different because of the abdication that sealed her fate and the way she handled it.

BMW6 · 19/09/2022 09:43

Well obviously the Queen was known and admired by millions more than Diana - for a start she travelled far more extensively and actually met thousands more over a far longer lifespan.

Total no-brainer.

But why are you so keen on Diana winning this invented competition 🤔

Bigger in general

Ah yes I know what you mean, TV screens are so much larger now so everything looks bigger.

'Touched more hearts' oh god please stop with this drivel!

stop opening threads just to complain the discussion is about what's in the title.

you don't have to be in MN on the day of the Queens funeral you know. Big wide world out there for people lacking in basic respect.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/09/2022 09:43

I dunno. OP doesn't say how old she was when Diana died. If she's taller now will everything look smaller?

Inkanta · 19/09/2022 09:46

Well Diane was only a 36 year old young woman - it was quite a shock and upsetting. I remember.

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2022 09:46

State funerals are rare so yes it will be bigger

Toddlerteaplease · 19/09/2022 09:47

Yes. As it should be. It's time to forget Diana now. The Queen did far more than Diana ever could have done.

mumarewenearlythereyet · 19/09/2022 09:47

@MrsTerryPratchett totally missing the point of this thread .... but I did Google those and that's really interesting! Love stuff like that!

I've heard that is indeed the decision criteria for a state funeral

Well Diana didn't get a state funeral!

I believe you because I remember it as well!!!
They were taking the piss out of her fir wearing eye make up in the operating theatre I think.
Then she died...boom! She was an overnight saint!
😂

Didn’t they adapt the original plan that was in place for the Queen Mothers funeral? It was all done in the space of about a week, amazing organisation.
