I didn't get the whole 'Princess of hearts' thing. Diana was good at self publicity and the country went mad. Well not all of it, but a fair few people went insane.

I thought it was sad that two children were left without a mother, but that would be the same if it was a single mother on a council estate.

The Queen I can sort of get. 70 years is a long time, this is part of history.

It already is.

Diana was really disliked in the period leading up to her death. I'm convinced it was guilt-laden virtue signalling and massive hypocrisy. The morning she died I was on a cross channel ferry. I went and bought the paper - from the day before - it was really attacking her. That evening when we docked I got the same paper but from that day. 'farewell put English rose' on the cover. Total turnaround. I wish I had kept both as nobody believes me. And my mum, like half the country, insists she never said all the anti Diana stuff she did. Personally I didn't like Diana, before or after. Still a tragedy irrespective of that though.

I don’t think Diana was disliked by the public in general before her death. She def got a hammering by the press and particularly leading up to her death there was a lot bad of press about her and dodi but I don’t recall the tide having turned on people actually starting to dislike her out of the general public. It’s certainly not the same as Harry and megan

No. The monarchy is on its way out.

I might have thought this was possible up to 10 days ago. Now I can see how much more popular QE2 was than the idea of a republic. A tiny proportion of people are talking about a republic.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/09/2022 05:49

Yes and quite rightly so.

Doesn't matter what you feel tbh

It isn't drivel. Diana's death was unexpected, and millions of people worldwide were truly devastated at the time.
The Queen's funeral will be a more important world event, but won't arouse the same emotions as Diana's did. As the queen was 96, her death was expected to happen at some fairly near point.

It was devastating because of the circumstances and also there was a lot of mass hysteria. There was outpouring of grief, which was for the individuals themselves and the boys. I was in my 20s and part of the outpouring. Diana was not universally liked let alone loved by all even in death.

It is correct to say the same emotions won’t be aroused. Many people are feeling rudderless right now. The grief is more real. Our head of state, the most well known person in the world and incredibly popular figure has died. HMQ gained far more respect than Diana.

2.5 billion of a global population of 5.84 billion watched Diana’s funeral. 4.1 billion of a global population of 7.97 billion are expected to watch the Queen’s. If this stat is correct, viewing figures are a bit higher as a percentage. Both are incredibly powerful events.

Sausagenbacon · 19/09/2022 06:09

I have the edition of Private Eye that came out after Diana's death, full of examples of the hypocrisy of the press.
Given that, IMO, she was pretty unpopular up to her death, the mass hysteria afterwards was incredible.
I am still astonished that so many people feel strongly about the Queen's death, but at least it's recognition for a job well done.

TheEggChair · 19/09/2022 06:16

Are you always this dim or a badly disguised trashy tabloid 'writer'?

Tuilpmouse · 19/09/2022 06:42

The Queen's funeral will be a full state funeral so on objective terms, it will
be more extensive and elaborate.

The circumstances of the deaths were of course very different, and that impacted people's reaction.

Diana's death was untimely and tragic, leaving two young sons with her life being marred by a lack of contentment.... so people's reactions were more visceral and raw.

The Queen's death was very different... deeply sad, but not tragic. She was 96, and had a full life of unblemished dedication as Head of State. People are mourning an era, as well as a person. The grief is profound more than acute.

So yes, I think you're right to say Diana's death "touched more hearts" in the sense many were more emotionally impacted
due to the sheer unexpected tragedy of her death and its circumstances, but that doesn't mean Queen's funeral won't or shouldn't be bigger.

I was camping in France, the newspapers were delivered every 3 days. She was hated. The letters pages were full of what a selfish cow she was, how she was treating the boys like an afterthought to her partying and how manipulative she was...

Then she dies and everyone forgot in the space of a few hours. Diana's death and the grieving that followed shows how fickle the public are, She achieved celebrity not legend status.

Maireas · 19/09/2022 07:25

I agree with pp - I remember the reporting of Diana that summer, holidaying with her boyfriend on yachts, not seeing her sons for many weeks etc. A negligent mother. Very negative. Boy that changed.

luckylavender · 19/09/2022 07:27

Well this is the first State funeral since Churchill so yes it is bigger

Mybumlooksbig · 19/09/2022 07:30

I was wondering the same, glad someone has asked.

I think the Queens will be bigger IMO.

I was far more upset when Diana died though

I remember this too. The week before she died, one of the tabloids had ‘Shut Up Diana’ as a headline and a member of the new government had branded her a loose cannon.

After her death, the same paper had a rather twee sketch of her in heaven and the caption referred to her as queen of all our hearts.

I was only 17 at the time and thought it was all rather ridiculous. I guess it was due to the sudden and shocking way she died, but it was so silly the way she went from villain to saint in such a short time!

Damnloginpopup · 19/09/2022 07:48

Finally! Some people who remember the feelings towards Diana just before she died!

@pleasegodontgoagain you traveling on Brittany ferries via St Malo? I was one of the photographers on there that stood by the ramp photographing cars coming on. It was a strange morning - normally people smiled, waved etc but that day I was getting stoney faces and even abuse. It was only after I finished and went up for a coffee before starting to print them that I was told the news by the purser. "Your princess is dead". Very surreal. I woke my colleague who obviously didn't believe me.

Georgeskitchen · 19/09/2022 08:07

I was shocked when Diana was killed. She was the same age as me. The hysteria was ridiculous and I believe this was the point that all the emotional incontinence in this country started, replacing the British "stiff upper lip"
I was disgusted by the crowds in London calling Her Majesty heartless for not coming down from Balmoral to " comfort them" FFS!!!
She was protecting two distraught young boys who's world had just collapsed .
I loathe the practice of laying flowers at the scene of accidents, it's wastef, bad for the environment and distracting for motorists.
I wish the RF had said no flowers outside Buck House please please please give to charity, although I get why people want to leave a tribute

SparkyBlue · 19/09/2022 08:20

I just heard there on the news a few minutes ago that the funeral is going to be the most watched event ever in the entire world.

I remember that. The press had turned on her and so had many peoples opinions. Now you even get teenagers on TikTok posting how Diana is their queen, despite not even being alive when she was. It's ridiculous.

  1. It was 25 years ago
2 . It's not a competition

Oh yes. I was just telling my young nephew about this. I was away on a break at the time and I,too, remember the newspaper headlines in shops the day before Diana died.
Pictures of her on a boat with Dodi, enjoying herself and the papers were far from kind! They were pretty awful.
This was in the days before the internet and all we had was newspapers.
The next day, boom! She was then the queen of hearts.

Katyaadlerscoat · 19/09/2022 08:30

Weird question, but since you ask... Bigger in every respect. Including far more members of the public in London for it.

Happyhapoydog · 19/09/2022 08:31

Yes, it’s a state funeral.

viques · 19/09/2022 08:33

I read somewhere that a million people lined the streets for Queen Victorias funeral. Taking into account that communication/transport at the turn of the last century was nothing compared to how it is today I think that she wins the golden funeral cup. Though I don’t think making funerals competitive is going to catch on as an Olympic sport because it really is pretty distasteful. ( viques ignores the fact that she took the bait with this one)

Yes! Thank you, god it's like everyone's forgotten reality! She was a total pain, always courting media attention, not well liked at all by anyone I knew... then she died and suddenly people were wailing about how wonderful she was. It was bizarre!
