To think the later queuers are just going because of FOMO

I think those queuing this late into it are just there because they are part of the hysteria and just want to go for the sake of it. Sheep basically and it’s nothing to do with the queen.

I think a lot of people will genuinely want to pay thier respects and a lot of others will just be sheep. Either way I was shocked at footage of parents queuing up with young children, borderline child abuse to make a child endure that in my opinion.

When Churchill died, 320,000 people are estimated to have queued for several miles over the three days he was lying in state to view the coffin. That was years before I was born but I still know it was a significant occasion. This is the lying-in-state of a monarch who has served for the entirety of most people's lifetimes. It's hardly surprising many have wanted to take part in the occasion.

I was watching the tribute to the Queen earlier and there were enormous crowds in the streets at her wedding and coronation. Royal events have always attracted vast numbers of visitors and this is in many ways the most momentous occasion of all. There have been many royal weddings and jubilee celebrations in living memory but tomorrow will be the first funeral of a monarch for most.

And yes many people will be there because they care. But I'd say a vast amount will be there for clout. Social media can fuck off some times

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 18/09/2022 23:58

I have absolutely no desire to meet the Pope. None whatsoever. If he happened to be in a place that I happened to be then I would probably go along just to say I'd seen him. It's not something that happens every day. Doesn't mean I laud the Catholic Church. Far from it.

This is likely to happen again in many of our lifetimes but it won't be for a monarch who has reigned for 70 years and throughout most of our lives. I doubt King Charles III's Queue will be anywhere near as long. As I didn't go to this queue I may well go to his. Just to be a witness to history.

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps

maybe rude at times yes but pompous or pretentious no. Paddle boarding mama thinks long words or banging on about her education make her sound smart.

If you’re seeing me use words you don’t understand or are too long for you, take a minute to Google them and learn something, maybe?

Honestly don’t know what to tell you at this point. There’s nothing pompous about having a semi-decent grasp of language, but I’m terribly sorry it’s upset you 🤷🏼‍♀️

(Find it just a tad amusing there are people who resort to “you use big words” as an insult, wtf has happened to Mumsnet 🤣)

…You summed up in one post what I managed to hack at for about an hour, thank you! 😂

But my point was that these sorts if occasions have always attracted vast numbers, since long before the arrival of social media.

I am not even fussed about the longevity really. Both my grandmothers lived well into their nineties. Why wouldn’t an extremely privileged and wealthy woman with the best doctors on hand, the best food and nutrition, warmth, and people to sort out every bit of tedious drudgery in your life and remove all that stress, live for a very long time? It would be surprising if she hadn’t.

I really don't understand why some people are creating thread after thread saying exactly the sane thing?!

The reaction to the Queens death really isn't hysterical (with a few exceptions). Sure, you've never seen anything like it - because it hasn't happened since 1952!

All I've seen, by a massive majority, is ordinary people from all walks of life queueing to simply pay their respects. That's all. No hysteria, no wailing (like Diana's), just quiet dignity. No "flag shagging" as I've seen used as a derogatory term.

Why on earth is it bothering so many on here?
What is your problem? They're not hurting you are they?

Why the jeering and sneering? Aren't you even a little bit ashamed of yourselves? Are you like this with others you disagree with?

Take a very long look at yourselves.

BMW6 · 19/09/2022 00:26

*same NOT sane FFS Mumsnet when is there going to be an edit function 🙄

Well, the nail has been well and truly hit on the head.

Mocking and sneering at those you disagree with used to be called bullying. Wonder how many of those who posted have #BeKind on their insta profiles and share endless “awareness” posts on Facebook.

SpinCityBlues · 19/09/2022 00:46

Interestingly, whatever's going on inside Westminster Hall is very far from 'hysteria'. It's eerily calm, with a quiet crowd just moving through. It's been almost mesmerising but each individual is unique.

Or is eerie calmness the new hysteria?

apintortwo · 19/09/2022 01:06

Or maybe they couldn't make it before? Why the nastiness?

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 19/09/2022 01:13

Oh do go away. Maybe they didn't have a day off or some childcare until now, or weren't sure about the queue length horror stories and saw it might be doable today. There are as many people in the queue as reasons for being there.

kateandme · 19/09/2022 01:15

Plus the queue closed hours ago.those in it now have been in it for a while. The end was cut off hours ago.all new attempts told to go home.
people really can’t stand others can they.
I don’t no what it is.the hysteria seems to be coming from everyone who oppose this.funny really.
is it bitterness, fear are you the actual ones with fomo because you can’t join in,don’t understand therefore lash out.
the horrid shitty nastiness has all come from the people not involved in these events. Like left out toddlers.

Itiswinteralready · 19/09/2022 01:39

what do people do when they need the toilet? do they just ask the people beside them to save their space? have there been portable toilets put in along the queue? what if they xant find their space when they get back?(queue seems to constantly be moving)

MuggleMe · 19/09/2022 10:18

Without taking time off, the earliest I could have gone was the weekend, like most people I expect. Perhaps for some there is an element of fomo, but what do they day, you tend to regret what you don't to not what you do do. It's an historic occasion.

beccahamlet · 20/09/2022 07:31

@Itiswinteralready
Yes, people saved your place in the queue if you needed to nip to the loo. The Queue was constantly moving, but you could catch up to your place easily. People swapped phone numbers so that they could get back in the right place. It was utterly delightful.

JustDanceAddict · 20/09/2022 07:58

I didn’t go but I watched a lot of the coverage and most of yesterday. Also am not a royalist but I love history and found it all very interesting. Sad the queen has passed, but not on a personal level.
