To think the later queuers are just going because of FOMO

I think those queuing this late into it are just there because they are part of the hysteria and just want to go for the sake of it. Sheep basically and it’s nothing to do with the queen.

Also the word hysteria just shits on women and was historically used to “explain” why women are emotional, or to silence their opinions by blaming their womb. So yeah… Less “hysteria” would be good 👀

Plus I think some need to look at a dictionary every now & again

I have found myself thinking this week, that when these threads pop up it can only be because the poster did really badly in history at school. Or had no interest in it? Surely, anyone with a good working knowledge of British history can understand why some people would want to be a part of it, to witness it in person, stories to pass down to their grandchildren and so on. Did the ops of these posts never have grandparents telling them stories about the war, about meeting royalty or the likes?

50 years from now some will he sat with their grandchildren on their knee recounting stories of how they attended the vigil of the countries longest reigning monarch, the people they met and the atmosphere… and some will say “lol was shit we stayed home and watched married at first sight it was brill”

At the risk of actually being reflective on an AIBU thread… you’ve got me there! I never did connect with History at school, I don’t have a big family so no handing down of stories etc and I just can’t connect with all this public grief. We’re all different I guess but… food for thought, so thank you.

VillanellesCoat · 18/09/2022 23:05

Not you, @PaddleBoardingMomma

That is a very good post. But it won't resonate with the posters who are desperate to mock and berate people for queueing to see the Queen/her coffin, because they get so much joy from being so mean and derogatory. Quite sad really isn't it? We should be pitying them really. Poor sad souls. Sad

I fear you are entirely correct. Some people will never have a grasp on occasions of historical importance, no respect for a situation and those involved. It’s perfectly fine to say you wouldn’t personally go, but mocking those who do by calling them “halfwits” simply let’s everyone know you either had a poor education or a pretty sad upbringing.

Jewel7 · 18/09/2022 23:06

Or they thought they may not have to queue as long! I haven’t considered their reasons but I’m sure each individual has a different one!

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 18/09/2022 23:06

I don't care........but its been dubbed the queue E2 in my house....which I think is rather hilarious 😆

But how interesting is that story REALLY… that they stood in a line for hours on end to walk past a box with a flag covering it that may or may not have had the queen in? Comparing that story to any of war that our grandparents might have told as if they are comparable suggests it’s you, not me, that didn’t listen in history.

@figmaofmyimagination I don't know really, guess it's just kind of stuck while I've been at home with 5mo DD! Firstly we were watching to see if there were many parents/babies to decide whether we could brave it (decided not to) and it's just been on ever since 🤷‍♀️ obviously I haven't been completely glued to the TV since 5pm on Wednesday 😂

Well, it definitely beats Teletubbies! 😁

Apparently, it’s really fun doing the queue. It’s become like going up bloody Snowden or something. An achievable endurance test.

yes this is the latest picture of the queue

I never said anything bad about people who are going and wouldn’t call anyone names I simply asked if I’m right in thinking it’s FOMO and hysteria and not really much to do with the queen.

Many others jump on these rude and unpleasant threads though, and berate people and mock them, and call them uneducated, and low class, and halfwits and all sorts for going and joining 'the queue.' I don't think you started this thread with good intentions to be honest.

Justkidding55 · 18/09/2022 23:12

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps im not anti royal. Or at least not them as individuals. I Love the queen and William and Kate and even saw them all go past for the diamond jubilee. I haven’t actually insulted anyone?

I actually think it’s the other way around. I did my PHD in history (focusing on Medieval royalty) and will pretty much read/watch/listen to anything historical that comes into sight. But to laud the monarchy shows a distinct lack of historical understanding about the damage the institution has done. Also, to compare this to the impact of World War II displays an even further depth of ignorance.

How interesting is the story?

it opens doors, does it not? You’re telling someone 50-60 years from now about being in London to see the queen lie in state, they ask why you went, you tell them about a monarch who served for SEVENTY years, how she was made queen at such a young age, the workings of the monarchy, you talk about how she actively served in the war, saw in 15 prime ministers, how Mountbatten was assassinated in Ireland, all about princess Diana and so on and so forth. It’s STORYTELLING, it’s a common shared history.

I am BAFFLED that some just have no frame of reference for how children are educated and taught about their own history. If they don’t learn about the monarchy, politics, economics then how will they be well rounded adults with a wide breadth of knowledge and be able to articulate their own feelings on the matters?

They would end up on Mumsnet in 2082 telling everyone else they’re idiots, I suppose. Just like granny used to do ♥️

AdoraBell · 18/09/2022 23:14

Anyone queuing for hours to do this is a halfwit

Thank you for your assessment of my intelligence Motorcycleemptyness

I’m curious, are you a genius because you didn’t want pay respects?

Leave them alone. Very sad that you feel the need to post this - stop being so judgemental, I wouldn’t want to queue either for reasons of my own, but if others want to do it, then let them. You really do need to find something else to focus your frothing at the mouth displeasure at.

I'm interested in all of that. I'm interested in how in years to come this may be a huge turning point for the monarchy given Charles claims to want to slim it down etc and there have been such polarised opinions on how the last two weks have played out. I also see no connection between being interested in those things and queueing for 20 hours through the night to see a box which you can do on TV if you want to. And I suspect most of those who did queue did it for the experience of being part of an event, any event, rather than what it actually represented.

Stating that people who have no interest in queueing up aren't interested in history or the significance of the moment is just as much an assumption as mine that most people are there from FOMO.

It is not lauding the monarchy to want to be a first hand witness to an historical event. I’m surprised someone who is supposedly a PhD in a similar vein would say something so vapid.

In fact, were it not for the scribes and people who attended court that were able to witness the events and document them for future generations, you’d have had no information, evidence or literature to have studied, would you? 🧐 If the people who documented through stories, words and paintings hadn't of done so during the medieval period, how do you suppose you would have been able to look back and learn about it? Teleporter, perhaps?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/09/2022 23:18

Surely almost everyone who is going is, to some extent, doing it because they want to be a part of it and to say they’ve been there. I don’t believe anybody would actually queue for 12+ hours if ‘the queue’ hadn’t been made into an attraction and if there wasn’t all the pomp and ceremony around it. People are going to see something they have never seen before and may not see again in terms of the abbey and the soldiers etc, I don’t think there’d be this much turnout if it was a 12 hour walk alone down a drab concrete path to see a coffin in an unadorned room.

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2022 23:18

It has crossed my mind that many of the “queuers “ may have lost family over the last 2.5 yrs, when funerals were restricted and private, and are using the experience to mourn in a more public fashion.
When my DM died ( in her mi 50s) there were over 200 people at her funeral. The church and crematorium were packed. The funeral was held in her home town, 100 miles from where she lived and worked. Since many couldn’t attend the funeral there was a memorial service a month later which was attended by 150+.
I would imagine that many people have lost family and friends during lockdown and have been unable to celebrate their lives so the Queens funeral will represent many losses.

LovinglifeAF · 18/09/2022 23:19

I don’t think it just applies to later queuers but who cares really it their lives and their time they are wasting

Justkidding55 · 18/09/2022 23:20

@PaddleBoardingMomma I never said or implied anyone is an idiot for doing it. You are the only one who has called anyone unintelligent? You make good points it’s just a shame you lack insight into your own hypocrisy. Fancy telling someone off for supposedly implying others are idiots when you actually told them they didn’t listen in class and only watch love island.
