Is the UK suffering from mass hysteria?

The Queen's passing is sad and seismic and the funeral will be a special occasion.

However, people genuinely seem to have gone mad.

It’s not like North Korea because, if it was, you’d be standing in that queue as well. The fact that you have the choice not to means that it’s as far from North Korea as it could possibly be.

William & Kate wedding policing alone £9 million
Harry and Meghan wedding policing alone £3.8 million

This tour de corpse is lasting 12 days - 12 days of policing needed as a minimum. We are paying for it (to be followed by a coronation)

It's not like when Diana died. That was hysteria. People were angry as well as mourning and there was a mob feeling. The queen was pressured into addressing the nation. When the royals met the crowds people clutched at the princes which was just so inappropriate. They vocally protested that the flag wasn't at half mast. I remember people were hysterical in their grief and wailed as the coffin went past. People have been respectful and solemn. Yes there have been tears but I wouldn't call it hysteria.

after the intial unhappiness with radio 2 i am really enjoying the music now.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/09/2022 21:32

this time hopefully there wont be elton john, singing

The woman in the paper complaining her 7 year old has been waiting in that queue for 15 hours deserves looking into as much as the bloke who went for the coffin. What sort of parent puts their child through that?

The mother said that they were trying to get back in so that her daughter could have another opportunity to pay her respects properly. That poor child.

I’m in Sweden at the moment and they’re all amazed by what’s going on in the UK. It’s totally OTT. The Queen was iconic and a great unifier, but it’s all going far too far. Why on earth are doctor’s surgeries and supermarkets closing? Why are people bowing at a coffin? Frankly ridiculous. Thanks, OP, for letting me get that off my chest.

Always with the Sweden is so much better than the UK thing. Sweden has a monarchy Confused

Incognitomum11 · 17/09/2022 22:05

Yep it’s nuts and absolutely hysteria. A 96 year old woman died and people are oh so sad, it would be laughable if it didn’t cost so very much.

Desmorelda · 17/09/2022 22:07

@MarshaBradyo
Don’t worry cost of living will be back in full media doom mode on Tuesday if you missed it.
Why is it doom mode ?
It's affecting millions of people. You are insinuating that it's made up or exaggerated.
Just because you and your friends, colleagues, neighbours have money to burn, the restaurants are buzzing blah blah blah in your affluent little bubble, it doesn't mean it's a figment of the media's imagination ..

did you watch the video ? it’s a commentary which is condescending towards another culture but fits remarkably, and hurts when the shoe is on the other foot

PearlclutchersInc · 17/09/2022 22:14

No more hysterical than at Diana's........oh hang on...... 🙄

Yep don’t worry it will be wall to wall again soon. I appreciate the break. You don’t. Everyone’s different.

NattyNatashia · 17/09/2022 22:27

The queen didn't pass she died, sorry.
No I don't think people have gone mad, the media on the other hand have lost all sense of proportion. Most people I know have little interest in the wall to wall coverage.
I have no interest in the any of the royals, the concept of hereditary monarchy is an anathema, that said I'm not sure what a better option looks like. It's an historical event I guess and I understand some wanting to feel part of it.
I've nothing against the queen as such, she did well in the role she found herself, she deserves a funeral for family and anyone interested but I'll be working.

Rhaenys · 17/09/2022 23:00

It feels not as mad as when Diana died.

powershowerforanhour · 17/09/2022 23:25

"This is leaving literal food and notes for a person who can’t see it. During a time where actual alive people are going hungry due to a shambolic government"

Santy is going to have it tight round Pumper's house this Christmas.

I imagine the pigeons will make use of the sandwiches. I don't think white bread and marmalade are good for them but they will have to make do.

Well that's because so many people feel impending (or current) doom due to a massive cost of living crisis.

Blinky21 · 17/09/2022 23:56

The media has gone mad and companies who are virtue signaling, if you don't watch TV or listen to the radio you wouldn't know anything had happened. I've heard one person mention it when I've been out and about and I certainly haven't seen anyone look remotely upset! If half a million people queue to see the coffin then that's 0.8 per cent of the population but, from the coverage, you'd think the whole country had joined in

StoneofDestiny · 18/09/2022 00:13

No, just going through the motions that Brits usually do when a monarch dies

em - it's 70 years since the last one died and since then we have homes with several TV's each, multiple TV channels, drone footage and live coverage of every cough, sneeze, faint and tear of everybody and anybody near the coffin. Hardly any need to leave your house in 2022 to have a view of things!

Its bonkers.

notprettybeautiful · 18/09/2022 00:16

I hate the whole concept of monarchy. This situation is ridiculous! We should be having a vote on whether it's time to dissolve the monarchy, the aristocracy, the whole shit show. However, if a person were to use their democratic rights to campaign for this, they would be arrested. Conversely, the rabid monarchists are allowed to assault people who have different views than them... Words fail me.

Bleachmycloths · 18/09/2022 01:18

Hysteria, psychosis and madness? Hardly. The media hype may give this impression as they search for dramatic reactions.
Remember August 1997? People were literally screaming outside Buckingham Palace. But that death had immense shock value.
The media rarely focus on those who simply shrug and say ‘Yes, very sad, but…’

whythou111 · 18/09/2022 01:30

seems a bit over the top to me, it does seem to be mainly an English thing rather than a UK thing. That’s just my perception though, maybe all 4 nations are going all out.

T1Dmama · 18/09/2022 02:00

People are saddened which is fair enough.
Many feel it’s worth queueing for days to see her laying in state… it’s a one off occasion and I can understand people wanting to witness history. . . For me personally I wouldn’t queue more than a couple of hours for anything!! But each to their own.. I would probably stand somewhere to see the coffin pass and pay respects if I lived nearby, I don’t so may watch it on TV..

BooseysMom · 18/09/2022 02:05

Yes, queuing all night to look at a coffin is mad.
Being distraught about the death of a 96 year old woman you didn't personally know is crazy
Leaving marmalade sandwiches and Paddington Bears outside the palace when some children don't get enough to eat is mad.
Cancelling operations and medical appointments when they waiting list is already too long is mad.
Closing foodbanks for the day when some people are desperate is wrong
Supermarkets reducing the sound on their checkouts as a symbol of respect is bonkers
Center Parcs stance is just unbelievable

I feel the Queen was all about duty and doing the right thing. I wonder if she would approve of all the above.
Quiet contemplation and respect for a life well led is understandable but what we have witnessed in the last week seems to be senseless

Agreed
