Is the UK suffering from mass hysteria?

The Queen's passing is sad and seismic and the funeral will be a special occasion.

However, people genuinely seem to have gone mad.

Surely most of us will live to see another monarch?

The psychic who predicted that the Queen would die on 8-9-22 also stated that the King would only reign to 2026, poor Charles. Hardly worth getting the Crown Jewels out, is it?

LovelyIssues · 18/09/2022 19:52

I haven't seen any hysteria or madness?

NoMoneyHun · 18/09/2022 23:51

Even the queues in my local tesco today was shocking. I needed a card and a bottle of wine for a colleague.... people were filling trollies and panic buying shite. The shelves were empty and they ran out of milk and bread. The store is closed for ONE day. 🙄
I don't understand why the general public behave this way.
I seen a few people coming out with bottles of water which made me think had I missed something? Was I in fact the crazy one for not purchasing the water like lots of people around me?

Really? What do you think?

NoMoneyHun · 19/09/2022 00:03

People being fuckwits. I don't need the water. I checked our local water suppliers to see if I'd missed some kind of supply problem but no, just people in my area being silly. Again.

sunglassesonthetable · 19/09/2022 00:11

Perhaps they had their own reasons for buying water?? Why are you getting so involved in what other people buy?

NoMoneyHun · 19/09/2022 00:17

It just seemed odd people were literally panic buying bottles of water today, (with other crap) maybe the odd person wouldn't have crossed my mind or crossed my field of vision but seeing queues of trollies, many of them with different crates of water seemed weird? Panic buying is another form of hysteria which is what this thread is about.....

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 19/09/2022 00:22

It's not been hysterical. I'm not a royalist but the clips of people doing a slow conga and chattering their way around London like it's a school trip is a bit off. I suppose that's better than everyone weeping and wailing.

@CurbsideProphet

I'm surprised by all the children who are apparently feeling very sad about the Queen passing away. I keep hearing it on the radio and during the queue interviews. When I was a child I would have had no emotional reaction to a 96 year old stranger passing away. Are the schools and parents actively encouraging this?

My primary teacher friend told me most classes are doing projects about the Queen this week (except the littlies).

My teenage DS and his friends are finding the coverage, queuing and interviews a bit perplexing

Roussette · 19/09/2022 06:48

I have to say.... some of the people the BBC are interviewing this morning are just 😲😲😲😲

itispersonal · 19/09/2022 06:54

The 24/7 news yes. But that's 24/7 news and filling for you!

This is historical a major event, there is respectful sadness and mourning by those who want to! Yes I did queue for 11 hours to pay my respects and be part of history. Britain will change now The Queen has died and Charles is the King. Not only because Charles is king but because the Queen has gone!

itispersonal · 19/09/2022 07:11

@CurbsideProphet

For my own 9 year old I think the Queen has played a more significant part of their childhood than perhaps before, I'm 30 years than her and I don't recall any significant birthday, jubilees during my childhood. For example, during her schooling from nursery to now - she's had the queens 90th birthday and jubilees which have been celebrated at school and now her death.

itispersonal · 19/09/2022 07:15

@CurbsideProphet
Also as my dp has just pointed out - images of the Queen have been on peppa pig, gangsta granny, BFG, Paddington, the olympics. And less than 6 months ago schools and the country were talking and celebrating the jubilee, which many would have taken part in.

Agree and was thinking this the other day. There seems to be a revival of royalist sentiment. We've had so many council approved street parties for Royal events and they definitely do a lot at school. Being a republican it seems makes you persona non grata.
Growing up we felt the royal family were dysfunctional. My Iranian mum was an avid reader of Hello magazine and I felt she was in the minority out of mums who adored the Royal Family just as she missed the Iranian royal family.

No. For those of us who remember the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, that was a much more volatile time which (arguably) could have been described as "mass hysteria".
The current sadness for The Queen is far more calm and measured.

This. There was definitely a lot of hysteria around Diana's death. This is a lot more dignified calm and measured. A more sombre tone.

deedledeedledum · 19/09/2022 08:01

Yes

deedledeedledum · 19/09/2022 08:02

It's also suffering from mass adoration of Kate and Sophie. Kate because she's looking nice in black and Sophie because she's crying a lot. They've suddenly gained saint status. It's weird.

All the primary school kids were given one so there does seem to be some conditioning. My 9 year old wasn't interested at all but perhaps he will be now.

Ilikepinacoladass · 19/09/2022 08:13

It's a big deal that the queen who was queen of this country for 70 years has died! Are you feeling a bit left out of it all by any chance? (I can relate to this!) Or is there another reason it's got under your skin?

AwlAtSea · 19/09/2022 08:25

Cba to read all of the comments but I've read enough to know that many people don't know what hysteria is - just because individuals aren't roaming the streets weeping, wailing and beating their breasts doesn't mean you're wrong.

What strikes me is that people are behaving as though they believed the Queen was immortal, and are shocked by her passing.
And the waste of money, when we are literally facing a winter where people don't know how they are going to cover their most basic bills, or put food on the table...

I've just heard a member of the public being interviewed on GMB referring to the Queen as the most hardworking woman there has ever been - I think my nans might have taken exception to that, given that they raised families with no electricity or running water, barely made ends meet their whole lives, and died much younger than the Queen due to lack of adequate medical care.

tbh the most frothing and hysteria I'm getting is from the

"what queuing to look at a box! appalling! dead women you didn't know! sheep! north korea! she didn't give a shit about you! Mass 'hysteria'! mindless! Performative! It's all FOMO! Moronic! it's just a box with a flag! It's taken over all the channels! Nothing else on! Grief tourists! Haven't they got anything better to do! But who's cleaning up the flowers! she's not in the coffin proof proof! It's child cruelty to take them in the queue! Mindless! Obscene! Everyone abroad is laughing! Insincere! Made up grief. Paying respects - what's that?!"

types on SM.

Day to day my life has pretty much gone on as normal. Bank Holiday aside.

I'm not a monarchist. But the queen of 70 years who lived through the war and epitomises the end of era has died. 🤷‍♀️There was always going to be mourning and a funeral. So be it.

I'm not a monarchist. But I understand respect and history. And squat if I'm going to be telling other people how to think and feel.

Well said!

Pumperthepumper · 19/09/2022 12:56

I think it’s such a brilliant opportunity to look at our future though. A new monarch (not a fan, but whatever) - what a great chance to look at how we can be better. Particularly when the new King has been very vocal about climate change, imagine if we’d taken that chance to say ‘don’t leave stuff, donate the money to this charity instead’. It could have really benefited so many people.

cyclamenqueen · 19/09/2022 13:25

@Pumperthepumper to be fair the royal family and the government website did say that but people took no notice. People were also asked to remove all plastic and non degradeable packaging and they didn’t do that either .

Crazykatie · 19/09/2022 18:10

Fairly normal day I did watch the funeral but didn’t waste my time I made 3 Christmas cakes, so a productive enjoyable day

The format of the state funeral was predictable, the same as George Vl and Queen Victoria so no surprises. I didnt see any Republican loonies, now is not the time to protest show respect
