AIBU to be over this Queen funeral malarkey already?

It is sad our Queen has died.

On a personal level it's sad for her family.

At a public level it's a momentous occasion for us because she was our head of state so we need to know what's happening next.

But do we really need this ten day event? When the PM left he just gave a wee speech. This is going on forever. Loads of things cancelled, BBC on wall to wall Queen setting.

It's a bit unnecessary isn't it?

Better off trying to figure out what we want from Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself, than all this rigmarole.

Or AIBU?

I don't think the country would be happy with, or it would be appropriate to just have, the Queen's body brought down to rest at the local undertakers and then just have her funeral. She was a huge part of British life for a long time. Ditto news reports reporting her death and then back to normal stuff a couple of days later. Realistically that's never going to happen.

Agreed. It's never ending and you can't escape it when you turn on the TV. It must be horrible and traumatic for her family. It's like the longest funeral ever.

FlissyPaps · 14/09/2022 23:13

YANBU.

The whole thing has turned into a circus. It’s grief tourism at its finest.

THISISMYOUTDOORVOICE · 14/09/2022 23:13

I confess I was quite transfixed with this afternoons proceedings. The ceremony of it was spectacular.
I’ve avoided the BBC though, DS referred to it as ‘Mourn Hub’ earlier and it did make me snort.

BattenburgDonkey · 14/09/2022 23:15

The PM leaving after a few years isn’t comparable, he isn’t the queen and he isn’t dead. Not sure what you mean by Bonnie Queen Charlie… Charles III isn’t exactly complex, he’s the 3rd king called Charles so it’s pretty obvious what he’s calling himself.

Il be glad when it’s all done but it’s not like we are going to have to experience this event regularly is it. Itl be over before you no it.

Grandeur · 14/09/2022 23:17

I agree 10 days feels a bit long, but it'll be over soon.

HeddaGarbled · 14/09/2022 23:18

Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself

I thought you had a valid point until that comment and now I know you have an AGENDA, I’ve decided to disagree with you just because you’ve pissed me off.

fUNNYfACE36 · 14/09/2022 23:19

I am sick of the mass hysteria. The virtue signallingand the bullying of people who don't want o do the same

Fudgemaker · 14/09/2022 23:20

YABU... this is a momentous historic event affecting literally the world. There's plenty of other TV channels or in fact the option of turning your TV off, it would be easy to avoid the 'malarkey' if you wanted to make the effort!

MissPoldark · 14/09/2022 23:20

😂at the BBC as “mourn hub”

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 23:22

I think the OP has confused Bonnie Prince Charlie with - something else.

I can appreciate lots finding the length of a State Funeral onerous. I'm really glad I'm not one who is obliged to attend everything.

MissPoldark · 14/09/2022 23:22

Sorry OP you also really lost me at whatever the fuck he's calling himself
totally unnecessary

Thedogscollar · 14/09/2022 23:23

Your Bonnie Queen Charlie comment just shows how ignorant you are.

On that note you'll have guessed I think YABVU.

Agree.
Its a once in a lifetime event.
Its history, the kids are interested, it’s a national event.
Honestly if you are so bored just watch a box set …

CapMarvel · 14/09/2022 23:24

YANBU. I mean, there was always going to be a fuss but honestly I think the country has collectively lost it's mind.

GreenManalishi · 14/09/2022 23:25

@Fudgemaker interested to know how a change of monarch is affecting "literally the world"? On a practical daily level, what's the impact, if we discount the mourning bit, a bonus bank holiday and some different looking money at some point in the future?

Guiltycat · 14/09/2022 23:25

I agree it’s pretty unbearable op. I’m in the gritting my teeth stage. Luckily my family/friends aren’t particularly forelock tuggy so as long as I avoid social media it’s fine.

I briefly visited Facebook but logged out quite quickly. The usual crowd (You know, anyone that ever does a ‘challenge’ involving filming/photographing themselves or changes their profile picture for EVERY event) are like grief vultures picking over a carcass. But then they would be like that with any event they could use to make it all about them.

Sallyandsam · 14/09/2022 23:27

There has been more pageantry and events because the Queen died in Scotland. Hence
the service in St Giles and Scottish lying in state. Now it’s England’s turn. I can’t begrudge the Queen 10 days of mourning after 70 years of service.

I do however feel incredibly sorry for the King, dealing with the death of his mother and a punishing schedule of physically demanding events. He’s 72 ffs and looked exhausted and broken today as he soldiered on.

You speak as if this event is something new. It is not. Read your History. Educate yourself THEN make a judgement with your reasoning.

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 23:28

Suggest you start with the death of Edward VII if you need a pointer re State Funerals.

Appreciate the patronising tone, thanks for that.

Call it history, call it protocol or whatever, it's still stupid.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/09/2022 23:30

It’s quite long, but I guess people want to be able to visit the lying in state and it takes a while to get the global VIPs organised.

It’s not like you have to really engage though. I’m not.

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 23:27

I very much doubt the mass hysteria, live streams of the coffin lying in state, mobile phones and cameras plastered in the RF’s faces whilst they’re publicly grieving and bloody wristbands being allocated to grief tourists mourners wanting to walk round the coffin all happened in the days after George VI’s death.

A lot of it is very much new. Today is completely different world since the last state funeral.

Don’t dare patronise someone and tell them to read up on history before having an opinion.

GuyMontag · 14/09/2022 23:33

@Fudgemaker alas the country apparently being in mourning is affecting me personally. I've got an event I've paid a lot of ££s for that I'm very keen to go to this weekend.

I've had at least six emails from the train company I bought tickets from to get me there and back - yes I'm going, no I'm not, yes I'm going but only on the 81st of June next year please see our terms and conditions for further information, it's a pain in the fucking hoop. I have no interest in any of this whatsoever and am just trying to do what I planned but everywhere I look it's black banners, Paddington, flying corgis and look-at-me coffin selfies.

I quite enjoy the royal events (I LOVED the platinum jubilee) but I feel a bit wrung out by this one, not sure why. It's everywhere and it's taking up a lot of headspace but I can't seem to look away and everyone is talking about it.
