AIBU to be over this Queen funeral malarkey already?

It is sad our Queen has died.

On a personal level it's sad for her family.

At a public level it's a momentous occasion for us because she was our head of state so we need to know what's happening next.

But do we really need this ten day event? When the PM left he just gave a wee speech. This is going on forever. Loads of things cancelled, BBC on wall to wall Queen setting.

It's a bit unnecessary isn't it?

Better off trying to figure out what we want from Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself, than all this rigmarole.

Or AIBU?

I'm glad I've no live tv. The entire circus is mostly passing me by.

I am sorry my tone was patronising, genuinely. I was aiming for exasperated but missed I think.

I get that you think it is stupid, but I am fed up with reading sneering jibes about people to whom this actually matters. It may well be illogical, when does love become logic in the first place!?

For a lot of people this matters a great deal. There is no place for sneering at their emotional connection, irrespective of your PERSONAL opinion. They have a right to their feelings don't they?

GuyMontag · 14/09/2022 23:40

Well that is entirely why we are going to hell in a handcart imo. "It's just my opinion you can agree or disagree" and all of that crap. Fuck off. If you are incapable of debate don't put your hat in the ring.

I'm not a Royalist, at all.

However, what strikes me is that this is a long ceremony designed a long time ago probably for young and fit people - not for a new King in his 70s.

He's showing the strain - an incredible piece of film tonight from US channels showing another paddy over pens - with Camilla looking incredibly distressed indeed. I'd also be worried by his swollen hands.

Goodness knows what state he'll be in by Monday night.

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 23:45

FlissyPaps this is very definitely not mass hysteria. Very very far from it.

And of course the other stuff didn't happen, because a lot of it hadn't been invented yet.

But people from all walks of life DID walk past his catafalque, as they did for his father and grandfather. This is nothing new. The techno is, but the Public response isn't.

GuyMontag · 14/09/2022 23:45

@LimpBiskit it's not just live TV though. I mean I knew that was going to be a write off. But there are some little things I like - radio 3 record review, the proms etc - that have been completely cancelled in favour of dirgemusac. Broadcasting radio 3 record review is neither unpatriotic nor triggering. And yet we are apparently too deep in mourning to hear it.

And this bullshit I've been getting about train tickets all week is completely unnecessary. I'm not going anywhere near London. I mean all power to those who are but I'm getting pissed about on my entirely unrelated but long anticipated trip.

Of course people have the right to their feelings, but likewise I can feel the whole reaction to it has been ridiculously overblown. The bbc are reporting it like the end of the world is nigh when really, what it comes down to, is an incredibly privileged woman rather unsurprisingly passing away after a long life of luxury.

Not everyone thinks the royals are special, but fuck me if we aren't all being expected to act like we do.

Jalepenojello · 14/09/2022 23:48

I pay zero attention to the royal family and have continued to do so. It hasn’t effected my life in any way what so ever. I choose to not spend time on any of the events so far or the news at this time. For 90% of it can be avoided I’d say YABU.

Guiltycat · 14/09/2022 23:48

And the people who think the mass hysteria (is it really mass though? Most people don’t seem to give a fuck) is annoying have a right to their feelings too don’t they?

There. Both sides have expressed their feelings. Marvellous.

Except, you feel uncomfortable when others are expressing their feelings about this. So are insinuating that they should keep it to themselves because it’s important to you and upsetting, right? While simultaneously ignoring that this behaviour/event is making THEM feel uncomfortable.

Ah the wonderful new age circle of using emotional victimhood to debate. Who will win? No one knows, because it can never, ever end.

Euridicefortuna · 14/09/2022 23:50

She wasn't just our Queen ,she had territories over seas where she was head of state. It's not just us that would like to say good bye .She lived an extraordinary life and has seen alot of change. She deserves a funeral that will do her justice. You don't have to watch/listen if you don't want to.It's easily avoidable, I have seen nothing (don't watch tv) but will watch Monday.

BMW6 · 14/09/2022 23:50

I do agree the TV channels should have sorted out something so it isn't wall to wall wherever you go.

BBC1 and their others at least could have been more reasonable.

Yeah overseas territories that her empire colonised.

I quite enjoy the royal events (I LOVED the platinum jubilee) but I feel a bit wrung out by this one, not sure why. It's everywhere and it's taking up a lot of headspace but I can't seem to look away and everyone is talking about it.

Seriously?
I dont know anybody talking about it other than the odd FFS.

Thats work, friends family. Nobody mentioning. Nobody mourning.

GuyMontag · 15/09/2022 00:01

@BMW6 exactly. Over the weekend there was no way of finding out what was happening, anywhere, unless you had Telegram or such. There was no other news. And like I say some programmes that they cancelled were completely unrelated to news/current events but are quite nice to tune into if you have an interest in music/gardening/culture/whatever. It's just alienating.

Plus I do think we need to have a national conversation about where we go from here, monarchy-wise. All very well keeping things steady while we had a decent head of state but this new guy having tantrums about pens and maybe not being quite on the ball, it's not looking like such a good deal and being bombarded with a ten day shut down isn't helping.

YANBU. I mean, there was always going to be a fuss but honestly I think the country has collectively lost it's mind.

This has been one of the longest funerals ever and for me the novelty of it ended the minute it left Balmoral for the first time. It's the same old thing. I can't wait until it's finally buried. R.I.P Queen finally R.I.P.

MarshaMelrose · 15/09/2022 00:03

Better off trying to figure out what we want from Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself, than all this rigmarole.

He calls himself King Charles III. Clues in the title. His name is Charles. There have only been two Kings called Charles before him. Hence he's the third. And he's not a woman but man. Hence his title is king.

I hope that's helped you get your tiny mind about what seems to be a straightforward title that the rest of the country has seemed to have grasped without difficulty. 🙂

mondaytosunday · 15/09/2022 00:04

So don't engage. You don't have to watch the tv - plenty of channels not showing anything to do with it.
Most people are going to work or school, going to the gym, whatever. You only need to be as involved as you want.
The only real disruption is that more stores than usual we be closed on the day of her funeral. I think you can allow one day to mark the passing if a woman who was working for us for over 75 years. Even then you don't have to watch.

StoneofDestiny · 15/09/2022 00:04

Driving round the country with a woman's corpse is bizarre - queuing up for hours to see a flag draped coffin equally bizarre. (but the latter is people right to do). However, the expense of this will be obscene - and the money better put towards the NHS.

Closing down hospital appointments, doctors surgeries and peoples holiday venues now cancelling flights and flight paths! Unnecessary.

Soon it will be more palaver with a coronation, then because of Charles age, likely another corpse tour in the not too distant future.

No chance of getting money into public services - but suddenly we have £millions to throw at ceremonies like this.

jokingfox · 15/09/2022 00:07

Sorry Queen didn't mean say "it" but seriously come on now. There's a country where the corpses are dug up and dressed and taken for a ride this whole thing just reminded me of that.

MarshaMelrose · 15/09/2022 00:10

but this new guy having tantrums about pens and maybe not being quite on the ball,

This new guy has been heir for a long time, is known to heads of states and dignitaries across the world who all say they hold him in high regard, has set up charities internationally, has improved the life and opportunities of innumerable young people and has used his considerable influence to try and steer decisions from key players for the betterment of both environmental and wildlife issues.

However, I wouldn't expect you to make any effort to find anything about this new guy because you couldn't even figure out his name. 🙄

GuyMontag · 15/09/2022 00:14

Aye, he's known - for being a pal of Savile and for taking cash in plastic bags. Plus wanting to be a tampon.

When Scotland separates (which will happen, have no doubt) will he become Charles I or will he stay Charles III?

So if you know about him, you must have known he was a man so why call him queen? 🤔

Why would he become Charles I?

YANBU

Though I have to admit, I’m slightly addicted to the BBC livestream of the lying in state - absolutely fascinating lesson in crowd psychology.
