AIBU to be over this Queen funeral malarkey already?

It is sad our Queen has died.

On a personal level it's sad for her family.

At a public level it's a momentous occasion for us because she was our head of state so we need to know what's happening next.

But do we really need this ten day event? When the PM left he just gave a wee speech. This is going on forever. Loads of things cancelled, BBC on wall to wall Queen setting.

It's a bit unnecessary isn't it?

Better off trying to figure out what we want from Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself, than all this rigmarole.

Or AIBU?

The thing is the funeral traditions were designed for a time before 24/7 rolling media and social media. I mean which bits do you cut the vigil? the trips to the 4 countries? the parade? the lying in state?

I'm no royalist but honestly the fault here is the media not the RF. in an effort to get more viewers and fill time they need to dissect and analyse everything.

I hope as part of the modernisation of the RF, Charles considers his own passing in context of the never ending media coverage and adapts.

LetMeSpeak · 15/09/2022 00:42

before I wouldn’t agree. However now thinking about it in maybe less than 2 decades we will be having the same for Charles and I most likely will live to see the same for William. I really don’t think I can do all this again. The Queen somewhat deserves it but I don’t think Charles will deserve all this when he dies.

GuyMontag · 15/09/2022 00:43

No, they can't sneak anything through but there are changes afoot wrt household expenditure that the government really need to be keeping an eye on but are not because they are apparently prostrate with grief.

And that is a problem for most people.

I dont share opinions about this anymore.....since being abused by a millie tant style obese - cant walk so cant join the queue - , right wing, lesbian i know....she held a prayer circle, held hands , candles and cried all night....i didnt show enough sympathy so she got shitty with me....!!

MarshaMelrose · 15/09/2022 00:38

You've made my point perfectly. The govt isn't doing anything. Therefore it can't be sneaking anything through, can it? The poster I responded to will be relieved to hear you confirm what I said.

The poster you responded to is neither relieved or believes that they aren't planning all sorts of sell offs, payment increases for us plebs and whatever else they can get away with before they are chucked out at the next election - whenever they decide to have it. So much of importance needs to happen and this 10 day lull just means they can officially shirk for even longer.

GuyMontag · 15/09/2022 00:45

@Thedogscollar I know you are but what am I?

Happy now?

You utter utter crashing bore.

Aye, he's known - for being a pal of Savile and for taking cash in plastic bags. Plus wanting to be a tampon

Reductivist:

Everyone was a pal of Savile …….. until they weren’t.

He did not ‘take hold’ of cash in plastic bags in the way you imply. There’s definitely some problems here but your phrase is simplistic and overly personal.

The tampon stuff was a private telephone conversation which was hacked by criminals and broadcast by scummy individuals. He was more sinned against than sinning here, IMO.

So, your issue isn’t really the Queen’s mourning period - this is just a generalised anti-Royal rant latched onto whatever you think will get the most votes.

Well if nothing else it's reassuring to see that the police actually do exist; I can't remember the last time I saw a uniformed police officer in my town

ReeseWitherfork · 15/09/2022 00:48

The Royal Family have decided to scream and shout about their existence from the rooftops over the last week, with giant metaphorical Las Vegas lights drawing as much attention as humanly possible to themselves. It’s a tall order to expect all of that attention to be positive. Many people will never have formed too much of an opinion about the existence of a Royal Family before, because they have probably never stopped to give it much thought. Thinking about them isn’t easily escaped right now, so lots of people will indeed have time to form those opinions.

Yeah overseas territories that her empire colonised.

I don't believe anybody is ignorant of this.Queen Elizabeth inherited the empire, she did not create it,yes she profited from it.The Queen had no power, her power was symbolic. She would have had a rebellion on her hands if she tried to free all the territories. Were my ancestors her ancestors slaves, certainly!Did Queen Elizabeth personally own slaves, no.Do I hold her responsible for her ancestors reprehensible behaviour, certainly not.Am I bitter absolutely not.One thing that the monarchy should do is to return the Royal jewels to their country of origin.

...We've all gone crazy
Mourning all day and mourning all night
Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right...

Starsinyoureyes13 · 15/09/2022 00:52

Maybe getting a hobby or doing home improvements should help.

1994girl · 15/09/2022 00:53

It's ridiculous

GuyMontag · 15/09/2022 00:53

@MarshaMelrose I don't really get the motivation behind posters like you.

I mean, we're all going to be fucked in no kind way over the coming winter. Even people who can afford it are going to be spending more than they'd like to. Unless they're uber rich with rising assets to compensate Which I doubt you are. Because the uber rich don't post on Mumsnet.

So you either really don't understand the situation we're in, or you're too thick to care, but either way you wouldn't be engaging on the subject.

So, why are you here, saying the things you do that are so very obviously nonsense? You know we can see you, right?

Facebook will be unbearable after the funeral with all the grief tourists putting up their pics and clips to show they were at Buckingham Palace, or in the queue, wherever. I've not been on there for a week and think i'll give the next 2 weeks a miss too. God forbid I dont appear to grieve in the correct way and get told off. Not that I'd comment on there, it must be gaslight city on this subject.

70 years of service is a big deal so I 'get' all the pomp and ceremony. I dont personally know a single person in real life who cares tho. Not even mentioned at work

A natural diamond takes billions of years to form, they don't belong to people, countries or anyone they belong to the ground where they were dug up.

@Euridicefortuna You do realise a lot of the jewels were sold to the royals? They were stolen but they definitely weren't traded fairly.

Take that up with the poster who was just concerned about things being sneaked through. The whole point of your thread was to agitate people so go agitate them about household expenditure.

YABU... this is a momentous historic event affecting literally the world. There's plenty of other TV channels or in fact the option of turning your TV off, it would be easy to avoid the 'malarkey' if you wanted to make the effort!

Just how exactly is it affecting the rest of the world other than people paying their respects and a bit of tv rescheduling.

And actually, payment increases for the plebs sounds good to me. I wonder how much I'll get?

MissingNashville · 15/09/2022 01:11

I think most people can avoid a lot of it if they want to.

My days are normal. Kids at school, partner working at home, shops are open. I’ve watched a film on Netflix and seen a friend without mentioning the Queen. I’ve chosen to watch the catchup bits about the Queen on iPlayer, chosen to engage in a few Royal threads but I could easily have gone the whole day without any of it. Other than Monday for the funeral which is bank holiday, it can be business as usual for many if that’s what they want. 🤷🏻‍♀️
