It is sad our Queen has died.

On a personal level it's sad for her family.

At a public level it's a momentous occasion for us because she was our head of state so we need to know what's happening next.

But do we really need this ten day event? When the PM left he just gave a wee speech. This is going on forever. Loads of things cancelled, BBC on wall to wall Queen setting.

It's a bit unnecessary isn't it?

Better off trying to figure out what we want from Bonnie Queen Charlie or whatever the fuck he's calling himself, than all this rigmarole.

Or AIBU?

She wasn't just our Queen ,she had territories over seas where she was head of state. It's not just us that would like to say good bye .She lived an extraordinary life and has seen alot of change. She deserves a funeral that will do her justice. You don't have to watch/listen if you don't want to.It's easily avoidable, I have seen nothing (don't watch tv) but will watch Monday.

And several of those territories are now considering their future as they don't want a monarch. Empire is nothing to be proud of.

They've even postponed Guinea Pig Awareness Week. If just one unsuspecting child is killed by an escaped guinea pig then I say it's time for another revolution.

WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE GUINEA PIGS

I wonder if for a lot of people it isn’t really grief at the death of the Queen but a perhaps subconscious reawakening of feelings of grief at the loss of one’s own mother or grandmother. (Not relevant to me personally as both grandmothers died before I was born and I celebrated when my b of a womb donor died).

I have been quite unmoved, apart from feeling sad for the family, except for one moment when out of the blue I felt really sad for a while. It was someone calling in to Classic FM to say she had seen the plane + coffin taking off in Edinburgh and QE2 leaving Scotland for the last time. I dont know why that got to me - I think it was probably the concept of “the last time”. Anyway, I’m over it now.

I am a republican, but it's not really the funeral itself that I object to (I get that, if nothing else, it marks a big moment in history), it's the avoidance of inheritance tax on massive private wealth, the cancellation of medical treatment and other essential services, and the performative, competitive grief from businesses and organisations (see above for guinea pigs). It's all that stuff that's introducing an element of bathos to the proceedings.

Bloody hell the cancellation of operations etc . Disgraceful

There will be back and forth about who said they had to but the Palace is now rowing back saying operations shouldn't be cancelled
Bit late now . Why didn't they anticipate all this disruption ?

Because yes they focused and planned for years - but only on the pomp and the tour to make sure the peasants get the message that Charles is King - got that serf?

Did they give a second thought to the impact on ordinary people and families re THEIR family funerals and operations . Did they hell . They could have prepared detailed instructions to local authorities instead of allowing competitive mourning cause damage to people.
It's a shit show

So you haven't heard that fracking has been given the ahead, despite there being no evidence that it is safe?

That was publicly announced, keep up! Things that have needed attention while they were selecting another unsuitable for the PM role STILL need attention. It's clear a cross party coalition is needed to try and sort out all the current crises. The point I'm not clearly making is that this is time that they are still not working for the general public.

On the point of queues, as someone on C4 news pointed out, with the current tech they could have assigned visit times where nobody needed to queue for hours. Instead just turn up at their allotted time. Less resources would have been needed if they had done that. Which of course us public pay for. I wonder if the world leaders will be expected to join the mourners in lining up to wait their turn to see the box.

Novella4 · 15/09/2022 10:48

@chaosmaker
That's too sensible

I think they want the queues to reinforce the 'we all love the royals ' message .
Booking online ! Can you imagine - they'd hate that .
Let the subjects queue ( though it can't be that long as people have babies with them) . Nice bit of advertising for them

chaosmaker · 15/09/2022 10:55

@Novella4 Clearly. It's the emperor's new clothes, sleight of hand, bread and circuses all done up in one expensive package.
My doctor's appointment on Monday is cancelled (fortunately not as urgent as some other people's will be but still important to me) and service users I care for are not able to access their usual services as, you know, bank holiday. They are missing out on sessions that are more vital to them than it is for others to be able to grief signal.

Arou · 15/09/2022 10:59

Lol at the Mourn Hub comment 😂

Totally agree. It’s too much.

Cosmic47 · 18/09/2022 16:14

No you're not, I'm not a royalist, and I'm sick.of it all already....wall to wall coverage on the TV, shows cancelled etc... Shops closed tomorrow.... Not all of us will be watching the funeral tomorrow, and don't get me started on the sheep standing in the queue in London.....😴
