Do women really age worse than men?

CoalTit · 14/09/2022 17:10

I just read a novel where the protagonist thinks at one point how women age worse than men, and it took me back to a couple of boyfriends in the nineties saying that as if it were just something that everyone knows. I was really surprised that anyone would think the sex that goes bald ages better. Do any women think men age better than women?
YABU: yes, women age (physically) worse than men do.
YANBU: no, men as a class age just as badly as women.

I mean, how many men are getting botox in their 30-40s?

Loads actually. It's very much a growing market. Also fillers to reshape their noses and jawline. Your point?

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 16:15

You're getting it mixed up.

Men go for younger women because younger women are hotter.

Men may 'go for' younger women but the younger women don't go for them.

Because younger men are hotter.

It's already widely accepted that men age better. But surprise surprise a load of middle aged women don't agree.

Well if you're a woman who thinks older men are so very attractive, fill your boots. They're a dime a dozen after all and most of us won't be fighting you for them.

Exactly!

If older men are your thing you're very lucky. There's absolutely no shortage of them. And there's a reason for that.

Perhaps some do. But as I said upthread, my SIL (55) looks so much better than my BIL (54) and they’re both very fit. Similarly, I hate to say this, but I (48) look better than my DH (50). I’m not fantasizing, he hasn’t aged well, although his face is unlined. I’m slim and take care of myself.

Neither my SIL not I use Botox, fillers. or heavy makeup. We do cover our greying temples though. 😂

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 16:39

I'm not talking about 50-60yo men. I'm just talking about the reality that most women start to lose their looks before men. Often around early 40s when the man still looks great if he's looked after himself.

It's a stupid thing to argue about and I'm not out to knock my fellow women down. It's just that if you tell me black is white I'm going to disagree.

Cameleongirl · 17/09/2022 16:40

And a friend (51) looked amazing in leather trousers the other day. She’s slim and well-groomed. Her husband is balding and has a pot belly!
He’s been head over heels in love with her for 25 years. 😍

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 16:42

But as I said, part of it is down to cultural aesthetics. A male body can be firm and not showing any deterioration at 40, whilst most women won't be quite as pert. However, women who had a slim frame with small boobs will likely carry it off better, or athletic women who will stay firmer. But again, our cultural aesthetic doesn't find muscley women as attractive.

But it's not a 'reality'. It's your perception. You're obviously entitled to that, but so are the rest of us who say that in our experience, the opposite is true.

I'd actually love to think there were lots of hot men my age out there. But there just aren't.

True. But the saying goes 'men age like wine, women age like milk'.

Muscle is seen as more attractive in men and is the one thing that can prevent things going droopy. That's my point. If we liked voluptuous men and muscular women then the reverse would be true.

Scianel · 17/09/2022 16:47

Yep. I was just thinking how any of my current celebrity crushes are around the late twenties to early thirties range.

Whereas I look wistfully at old pictures of James Spader and think, oh, you used to be so beautiful...

TokidokiBarbie you sound a bit out of touch. The ripped, muscled look is really hot for women just now and it's a look that's very achievable for older age groups as well.

What women do you know who lose their looks in their early 40s!?! Because that is a good part of my friend group demographic and seriously, none of them are losing their looks!
Its not really till my age - later 40s that your face starts to change.

And YY to pp talking about unfit middle aged men. Sick of men in their late 40s and early to mid 50s on OLD who have not taken any care to keep in shape at all. So many men this age just completely let themselves go, yet still seem to think women will find them hot.

So your perception is based on 'sayings' now, is it? Misogynistic sayings too.

And you keep reiterating the same point without acknowledging that the vast majority of men aren't fit and muscular. Even if what you are saying is theoretically true, it's of little relevance in reality.

Plus, you're focussing on this while ignoring everything else. A full head of hair is generally considered attractive, yet men frequently lose all or most of their hair as they age. Women's hair thins too, but nowhere near on the scale of male pattern baldness.

Also, men tend to gain fat in their belly, which is most unattractive, whereas female fat gain tends to be more evenly distributed. That's the reality for most men outside these mythical old hunks in 'proper lifting gyms'.

Are you a man by the way?

blankwall · 17/09/2022 16:54

But the saying goes 'men age like wine, women age like milk

Yes, but that saying was invented by the equivalent of the fat bellied, flabby men middle aged men I come across on OLD who seem to think women will find them attractive, because you know, 'men age like wine.' Deluded, deluded older men think this.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 17/09/2022 16:54

@TokidokiBarbie I have not seen such a load of utter tripe and complete bollocks posted on here in a LONG time. 😂 Hilariously, I think you believe your own bullshit don't you? Grin

Bless....... 😊

Exactly. These deluded fat middle aged men with more hair on their arse than their head, yellow teeth, and a hairy paunch hanging over their trousers are determined they will get a 27 year old Taylor Swift lookalike on OLD.

And - quite understandably - these young gorgeous women, laugh at them and turn them down (after spitting out the sick that just came up in their mouth,) and the men are aghast, because they think they're 'hot' because they have been peddled the bizarre myth that men age better than women.

LOL! I can't believe anyone in the 21st century still believes this? Are people that obtuse and badly educated??? 😂

Why do you keep making a false comparison between an older man who works out and 'most' woman?
You need to compare either two people who both train hard or two people who don't and let nature and lifestyle take its course.
You also need to understand that there are more than two types of female body. You seem to think women are either attractively voluptuous, therefore with fat that will sag, or athletic so less saggy, but unattractive anyway. This shows very little knowledge or awareness if the female form.

A 'trend' where? I had thought that whole Kardashian big arse thing was a bit last decade, but then it wouldn't surprise me if geezers' dating sites were a bit behind trend.

More likely punternet.

Not at all. Some bloke on a forum won't make me question what I can see with my own eyes.
The only thing that touches a nerve for me is the blatant attempt to manipulate women into thinking they should be grateful for the attentions of Mr Potato Head because he's so much better looking than them. Like if you just keep telling us you're gorgeous, we'll believe it. Its tedious and it doesn't work. Do better boys.
