Do women really age worse than men?

CoalTit · 14/09/2022 17:10

I just read a novel where the protagonist thinks at one point how women age worse than men, and it took me back to a couple of boyfriends in the nineties saying that as if it were just something that everyone knows. I was really surprised that anyone would think the sex that goes bald ages better. Do any women think men age better than women?
YABU: yes, women age (physically) worse than men do.
YANBU: no, men as a class age just as badly as women.

In general, men age much worse than women.

I see attractive, stylish women well into their 40s, 50s and above every day.

Unfortunately, I hardly ever see men about whom I can say the same.

CallMeNutribullet · 17/09/2022 11:08

It's bullshit. It's just that wrinkles and grey hair are tolerated for men more than women.

I've read so many posts on here about how sexy Sean Connery was in his 50s-60s. Never heard that about a similarly aged woman.

You've never heard men saying they find the likes of Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Helen Mirren or Kim Cattrall sexy?

I'm a man.
What have you got to offer?
I'm marrying a woman 12 yrs younger. My ex-wife was 7 yrs younger. All the dates I've ever had have been with women more youthful than myself.

I think most people age badly post 40.

Are you Alan Partridge?

Marrying a younger spouse isn't an achievement.

Flutterbybudget · 17/09/2022 12:46

Well, I find older men far more attractive than I do their female counterparts 🤷‍♀️

Excellent. The more people who are willing to take them on, hopefully the less of them will be out there making a nuisance of themselves imposing their unwanted attention on those who aren't. You're taking it for the team!🙂

A great body without a head isn't attractive, or much use, so even if men can maintain a good body as they get older its not much use if they have a balding head and unattractive face. If we start swapping heads around we could all be stunners.

If you read the thread, you'd see my other posts saying it's just an example.

If a 74 year old guy can have a body that a 35yo would be proud of then that's something. A guy of 50 is going to likely find it easier to maintain his physique that his female counterpart and facially he's defo going to be better off as we have thinner skin and age worse in the face.

It's not a slight to women. It's just reality.

Where are all these 50 year old men with glowing skin and hot bodies?

I never seem to meet them.

By contrast, I see attractive women that age and well above all the time.

cawfeee · 17/09/2022 14:09

@TokidokiBarbie . I think the point is that they don't do those things, most men of that age breeze by on the assumption that they don't need to bother, women don't get that luxury.
I've seen women in their 50s with fabulous bodies that are putting in the effort to keep in shape, Jennifer Aniston and Davinia McCall spring to mind, it's not an option open only to men.

Male beauty standards revolve around being lean and muscular. Female beauty standards revolve around being voluptuous. It's pretty much an unambiguous fact that the latter will be more affected by age. A muscular male body with low bodyfat won't sag like a curvaceous female body will.

Most men are far from lean and muscular. Most are overweight and their fat sags just the same.
Women can have the curves considered to represent female beauty while having low body fat, its about hip to waist ratio which can be preserved well into middle age.

Christy Brinkley age 68
Goldie Hawn age 76 and Kurt Russell age 71

Sorry guys.

Perhaps women your own age find you unattractive. Based on your posts, that seems highly likely.

I think most people age badly post 40.

Including you, presumably.

Maybe try some proper lifting gyms? Men often look at their best at around 40, whilst most women are defo not as hot as they were in their 20s.

People who get fat like Kurt Russell etc are a different matter.

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 15:55

A better question would be: 'which sex better conforms with accepted body standards as they age?'

The answer is men, but only because of the different standards. But nonetheless they tend to look better, hence the sayings. If it weren't true, men wouldn't be looking to trade in for a younger model would they? 🤷‍♀️

I've been in many a gym in my day, and can't say I've been blown over by all those raving hunks in their 50s. Quite the contrary. Don't know if they were 'proper lifting gyms' however.

And no, most men don't look better at around 40. The reality is that way more men are going to go down the Kurt Russell route than the 'proper lifting gym' route. By contrast, women are much more likely to take care of themselves and remain attractive well into middle age and beyond.

That's very poor logic.

I am 53. Physically, I find younger men way more attractive than men my own age, although that could be down to my not venturing into 'proper lifting gyms' where all the hard bodied older hunks hang out (apparently). However, I'm under no illusion that much younger men would fancy me, because they can get hot women their own age. Similarly, men in their 50s might fancy younger women, but unless they have something special to offer, the attraction won't be reciprocated because the women won't fancy them.

In general, women are a lot more realistic than men in this sort of thing.

You're making some very naive assumptions there.
Firstly, that men's (usually unsuccessful) quest for a younger model is based on their own level of attractivenes. Men don't chase young women because they're too good-looking for older ones. Maybe some think they are, but more usually because they couldn't care less what women want, only what they want.
You only have to look at them in action continuing to lech over young women in clubs who are either visibly disgusted by them or openly laughing at them, sometimes both, to see how little women's attraction to them matters.
Typically, older men who manage to get young women aren't attracting them on the basis of their appearance, but despite it.
Secondly, that older women are with older men because they still find them physically attractive. Very few women would objectively consider an old male body as attractive as a young one. It's just that some women believe same age men are a better match in terms of life stage etc, or appearance matters less to them.

You're getting it mixed up.

Men go for younger women because younger women are hotter.

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 16:17

It's already widely accepted that men age better. But surprise surprise a load of middle aged women don't agree.

TokidokiBarbie · 17/09/2022 16:18

I mean, how many men are getting botox in their 30-40s?

If you did venture into a lifting gym, it would only confirm your view that young men are very much more attractive. They are full of young men with great bodies.
The older ones often tend to be stocky and square, as though they've just hardened up their fat. And they're just as bald.

Scianel · 17/09/2022 16:23

I've made no comment on whether old men find young women hotter. I'm sure they do.
I'm commenting as a woman, who may not be young now, but was once. Its from that perspective I'm saying that old men can 'go for' what they like. Unless they're rich and/or very successful they've no more chance of getting a hot young woman than I have of becoming the Queen of Sheba.
