Do women really age worse than men?

CoalTit · 14/09/2022 17:10

I just read a novel where the protagonist thinks at one point how women age worse than men, and it took me back to a couple of boyfriends in the nineties saying that as if it were just something that everyone knows. I was really surprised that anyone would think the sex that goes bald ages better. Do any women think men age better than women?
YABU: yes, women age (physically) worse than men do.
YANBU: no, men as a class age just as badly as women.

Don't. My daughter works in a care home and she's caught the residents at it. Fair play to them but was a shock for her as she wasn't expecting it!

Maybe it was Mr Boombastic getting fantastic?

Bloody hell. @Kashmirsilver , you old rogue!

The guy in the below picture is 74. You could swap his head with that of an attractive 40yo man and he'd look great. Now try and find me a 74yo woman with a comparatively good physique who you could swap out with a 40yo woman.

That's what I mean about men's physiques being more possible to maintain due to muscle mass

I don't get it, this guy just looks old and muscly, but still old. Not attractive to me in the least.
I'm guessing the jeans hide a multitude of sins, like saggy balls, grey pubes and a dick that doesn't work. Are we supposed to be impressed?

You could show an older woman with a fantastic pair of legs, or great boobs, but the rest of her may still look oder - it's the whole package people usually assess when looking for attractiveness.

I'm a man.
What have you got to offer?
I'm marrying a woman 12 yrs younger. My ex-wife was 7 yrs younger. All the dates I've ever had have been with women more youthful than myself.

I think most people age badly post 40.

And yet here you are hanging out on Mumsnet....

Who's this guy calling himself Barbie whose only purpose here is to whine about feminism and tell us why 74 year old men are sexy?

Some people are only 'sometimes' Barbie. Maybe the rest of the time a 74 year old man?

The annoying thing for me is that on social media if a man looks like he has aged there are tonnes of comments saying "oh that's what married life does to you" and if a woman looks good it must be due to botox etc. Even when men dont age well apparently that is still womens fault 🙄

Bankcockbabe · 16/09/2022 12:19

I think men age better. Gota be honest, I think many men have an easier life, he lack of having gave birth and stress, has helped them to look younger

😂 Yep, it’s always the woman’s fault. Nowt to do with eating/drinking too much and lack of exercise.

Or, in my v. fit BIL’s case, bad luck on the gene front!

CoalTit · 16/09/2022 16:11

You're asking the wrong question. Te very concept of asking if someone "ages worse" than another assumes that aging is a bad thing. People age, it's natural.

I asked for women's opinions because I came across the statement by a man, not for the first time, that women age worse than men do. I had never solicited an opinion on the matter before I started this thread.

Do you actually mean are older men generally seen as more attractive than older women by society ?

I wanted women's take on an opinion I'd heard expressed several times by men as if it were a well-established fact. The opinion is that women age worse than men. I don't know exactly what prompted the men to opine.

They always come on to opine when they think we need reminding how ugly we are when we get older compared to them.
Its to make us think we don't have as many options as they do, and so should accept their substandard looks and inadequate performance and be grateful for it. Its very transparent.

Do you always take subjective opinions as established fact if they are expressed by men?

J0y · 16/09/2022 16:39

@5128gap so true the bar is so low, some women are so susceptible to being shamed for being single.
Not me though @Kashmirsilver I am proud of being single. Dont mind at all if strangers shut me down with "what have you got to offer a man?"
Ooh that showed me.

Happyhapoydog · 16/09/2022 16:42

Is that a joke?? Not from what I saw on the beaches of Italy they don’t - massive HAIRY blokes with beer bellies hanging out… hair on their backs, chests, out of their ears!
in my experience a lot of men just get grumpy and miserable too… women take up hobbies, exercise, learn new stuff

JOFFCV · 16/09/2022 16:47

I wonder what @Kashmirsilver 's 12 year old younger bride to be would think if she knew he was hanging out on Mumsnet with his emoji's winding women up. Bit embarrassing really and a big turn off.

JOFFCV · 16/09/2022 16:48

Not 12 years old - 12 years younger.

User135644 · 16/09/2022 16:55

I wouldn't say either gender age better. Women tend to massively inflate their appearance though with plastic surgery, extensive make up, beauty regimes etc which the average man just doesn't do. This tends to make women look better but if you remove all the make up and plastic surgery then less so.

Palmfrond · 16/09/2022 17:25

The 74 year old guy with the huge muscles , assuming it’s not photoshop, is definitely juiced up, which at his age, any age really, is probably not a very good idea at all.
Mens testosterone drops off a they age, so no, they can’t maintain muscles like that without taking steroids. And frankly a man of any age with that kind of body is I would suspect of being on steroids.

After all the chat I had to trawl back to see.

I've been going to the gym for aeons doing weights. That 74 year old is 100% on the juice or photoshopped.

@TokidokiBarbie that's a shameful post and the most blatant failed attempt at making a point ever. Getting that low body fat % is possible at any age but not that level of muscle mass. Arnie bless has looked like that at 70 but has spent a lifetime on the juice.

ReneBumsWombats · 16/09/2022 18:57

I've just remembered the last guy I saw who thought his girlfriend's age was the only significant thing about her.

Alan Partridge.

My neighbour has used his economic advantage to marry a young Thai woman, he's in his 60's, bald and short, not wealthy, just wealthy in comparison to where she has come from.
She has just turned 35, he wants you to know.
🤮🤮🤮

J0y · 16/09/2022 21:03

Omg, so tragic. Do any men look at that and think, go you, loved for who you are excellent good fortune!

It's their choice, they're both consenting adults. But personally, I'd be creeped out knowing that my spouse was essentially waiting for me to die so they can get on with their life - because that's the reality of their situation!

I've read so many posts on here about how sexy Sean Connery was in his 50s-60s. Never heard that about a similarly aged woman.

Yuk!! He wasn't even attractive when he was younger! Envy
