I've had to cancel a holiday to repair my car - (was paying monthly) anyhow I phoned the travel agent and asked how much the cancellation charges would be. They said it's £150 per person. Fine £450 in total. Just been refunded now and instead of £2500 I've been given £300! Fuck! I'll be straight on the phone in the morning but fuck!

I wouldn’t think holiday insurance would cover no longer being able to afford the holiday. It’s outrageous if you’ve been misled by the tour operator. Do you have the cancellation discussion in writing or was it over the phone? If so, hopefully it’s been recorded.

popcornfrenzy · 13/09/2022 03:35

I doubt insurance would cover it - the conversation was by phone. I'm hoping it's recorded too.

I'm so sorry, OP. I would be hysterical in your position.

I really hope it works out for you.

popcornfrenzy · 13/09/2022 03:39

Had they told me flights wouldn't be refunded then I wouldn't have cancelled it but they said I would lose £450 only as that was the deposit to secure holiday and that as per the company the holiday is with. It's written in the booking terms that any non-refundable items would be payable when I booked but I only paid £450 when I booked the holiday the rest was done on a monthly direct debit with Hays

I honestly feel sick - I've lost my holiday and also can't afford to get my car fixed either. I know this is a bit of a first world problem but I'm wondering what I've done to deserve everything being thrown at me at the moment.

@bahlong omg the same thing has happened - they must do 2 payments! The £2k has just landed in my account - I've just cried with relief 😂

Was just reading your thread OP and got to the end - I was hoping that would be the case!! Brilliant. Huge relief for you.

Hope you can get some sleep now, and the dratted car is fixed soon too.

Thrilled to hear this, OP. It's probably money held as deposit (it sounds like maybe 10% of the total bill?) and then the sum. Really glad for you, though sad you'll miss the holiday.

Firstshoes · 13/09/2022 04:36

GrinGrinGrinthank goodness. So relieved for you!

MistyRock · 13/09/2022 05:01

I had something similar, but the other way around. I bought some flight tickets, the money came out, then the money went back into my account except for 1 ticket cost, then over the next few days they gradually took the rest again. Bizarre and annoying as I couldn't get a true amount of what I had in my account.

carefullycourageous · 13/09/2022 05:20

Pleased for you!

So happy to read this. Yippee!! Hope you've got some sleep now.

I think they return the payments to you in the instalments you have payed. We cancelled a holiday with TUI sue to covid and we were expecting £1800 back and got £600 then £1200 I think there was about 12 hours between the refunds.

popcornfrenzy · 13/09/2022 05:57

It's such a relief! I've not been able to get any sleep as I'd worked myself up into a state. Upside is I've cleaned the downstairs downside is today is going to be a real fucker cause my alarm goes off very soon.

Hey, congratulations OP, glad you got your money back and sorry for your sleepless night waiting.

You are probably feeling a bit ‘addled’ from lack of sleep so I wondered if you have had a chance to consider saving yourself future stress by carrying on paying the same monthly amount that you were previously paying the travel agent into a savings account to give yourself an ‘emergency fund’?

HuntingoftheSnark · 13/09/2022 06:37

@popcornfrenzy so glad this had a good ending. Hope you're not too exhausted today.

popcornfrenzy · 13/09/2022 06:38

@Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight that's really not a bad idea - I really wasn't missing the money so will continue.

I’m going to take a punt.

You don’t have insurance anyway, do you?

Popaholic · 13/09/2022 07:00

So happy for you OP. I genuinely felt gutted for you reading your initial posts!
Hope that car gets fixed and you get some decent sleep tonight.

Ouch hate no sleep, I’m miserable monster but I’m sure 2k I thought I wasn’t getting would keep me going🙂

LobeliaBaggins · 13/09/2022 07:12

I am glad you got this back. It's not a first world problem either, as you said!. Hope you get the chance to go on holiday in the future.

That’s a weird assumption but irrelevant anyway insurance doesn’t cover you changing your mind.
