I've had to cancel a holiday to repair my car - (was paying monthly) anyhow I phoned the travel agent and asked how much the cancellation charges would be. They said it's £150 per person. Fine £450 in total. Just been refunded now and instead of £2500 I've been given £300! Fuck! I'll be straight on the phone in the morning but fuck!

The whole package was booked through Hays - will speak to them in the morning

I have previously got a full refund from Hays after I was due to go on holiday with a family who then cancelled and left me with the remaining balance to pay. I explained the situation in a polite email and they phoned me and say that on this occasion they would refund the balance and cancel the holiday. It's worth a try. And if it doesn't work, keep trying, as it might also depend on who receives your email. If you would like a copy of the email I sent please let me know.

Daisymaybe60 · 13/09/2022 10:32

Phew, I’m happy for you, OP. If this is the way Hays normally operate, you’d think the person you spoke to would have warned you - it would have saved a lot of worry!

@popcornfrenzy

sick of company trying to cheat people.
it is theft
the directors of all companies that do this should be charged.

watch it stop then

mynameischloe · 13/09/2022 11:07

I'm so chuffed you got your money back, OP!

No judgement! Just you were savvy enough to buy Travel insurance but not to squirrel anything away for emergencies and now to lose hundreds (albeit better than thousands!)

I used to buy annual travel insurance as it worked out much better value, and I've had it through bank accounts too. Maybe the OP has one of these? I think it is a bit needlessly nitpicky when it isn't actually relevant.

Notmyfirstusername · 13/09/2022 11:17

OP, really glad it worked out for you.
To Smug PP’s talking about emergency savings before booking a holiday, please remind yourselves that things change. OP may have had savings when the holiday was booked, and then several events happened in a row to deplete the savings, which couldn’t be replaced due to the cost of everything rising.
That sort of thing will be happening more and more in the next few years, try to have a bit of empathy

You're pretty much bang on the money here - I've been paying for this for almost 18 months and things were a lot rosier when I started. Lesson learned though and will build my savings pot back up - I just wanted to do something nice for the kids as it's a bit doom and gloom at the moment. Thank god they didn't know

Oh wow, I'm so pleased it all came through. I felt genuinely sick for you when I read your earlier posts.

Best to ignore the obvious trolls.

Well, I find it intriguing that you were prepared enough to pay in advance but not to have a functioning crystal ball that would have foreseen all that. It really is very basic witchcraft OP, try to buck your ideas up.

Glad it all got sorted, and I hope you manage to sort another holiday soon Brew

AdoraBell · 13/09/2022 12:37

Hope you get it sorted very soon OP

CoastalWave · 13/09/2022 12:44

I am genuinely confused though - if you're rich enough to not mind losing £450 on cancelling a holiday, how can you not afford to mend the car?!

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Who spends £2k+ on a holiday if you haven't got £1k (I'm going top end!) to fix a car?

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/09/2022 12:53

So glad to hear you got more money back. Thank goodness. Hope your car works for many years after you get it fixed.

It seems obvious to me that the answer to your question is people who have had a change in financial circumstances. A lot can happen in 18 months.

I’m just so sorry you had to cancel. And then for this to happen.the worry must have sent your system insane. I no you want to do something next summer and I think this is a brill idea.I also know that even saving for that might seem impossible.
could you try something smaller.so rounding up every transaction you make and putting that extra round up into a sep acccount. Yeh,might jot equal a holiday but that total amount next year could be a present for the you all or even a day out.
alos at the end of summer lots of things come cheaper.so camping gear in the sales and equipment for summer activities.that way you can get them for a fun next summer. We got a really good tent bundle by doing this at the end of summer holidays.and body boards and wet suits.

Folklore9074 · 13/09/2022 13:37

Really glad this has worked out OP. And baffled that some people can not understand that financial circumstances change over 18 months.

popcornfrenzy · 13/09/2022 13:52

@CoastalWave the car needs a new engine so really not a small fix. Been quoted £1.5k and now I'll have the money to pay as I need the car more than the holiday.

OP posts:
TammyOne · 13/09/2022 14:10

Oh bad luck about the holiday, and losing money, but at least you can get the car fixed. What is flipping wrong with people with all the judgement though?!
OP booked a holiday well in advance and paid in instalments, which is sensible!
I probably would have kept the holiday and bunged the car repairs on one of my credit cards, so judge that bitches. 😜
