To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

I like the queen and Paddington picture but It was powerful on its own without the comments about being taken to her husband etc.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/09/2022 07:32

They don’t really bother me but I find it quite odd that all this came from one sketch and now he’s somehow the nation’s mourning mascot.

Pugdogmom · 13/09/2022 07:44

I can think of loads of things to get offended about if I was bothered, but not a fecking bear. 🙄

That’s missing the point a bit. Paddington is great! I was a huge fan as a child, he’s a much loved children’s character and not offensive at all.
But connecting him to the Queen after she died-that’s what’s a bit strange.

Is it though?

The Paddington/Queen Platinum Jubilee Film only came out a few months ago.

bellabasset · 13/09/2022 08:38

I thought that the Paddington bear was a lovely touch from the Queen that her great grandchildren would have loved at the Jubilee. Kate has said that Louis is sad about his granny but he knows she is with grandpa. So perhaps it has a use in explaining the loss of a loved one to a young child. But it's been overdone now.

But the marmalade sandwiches, jars of marmalade, loads of flowers in plastic, balloons, candles are all over the top. Why not one rose with a message and donations. I think that donations could have done so much to help children and families.

O do give over. What difference, overall, does it make to you? Let people express themselves how they wish. At least they're not writing poetry.

If your "self expression" involves a real-life, recently-deceased person whose life or close family you've never been involved with and who haven't consented, then it's not ok.

Seeing that "makes a difference to me" because it encourages a culture where people can project and impose their own unhelpful, mawkish sentiment on strangers in the name of "self expression".

Deguster · 13/09/2022 08:56

Just going to leave this here.

Oh god unclench.

Since when have people not done this?

FiveLittleDucklings · 13/09/2022 09:20

I think they are cute.

Mywatchis · 13/09/2022 09:30

Oh dear god.

So Paddington has passed to the marmalade heaven then?

Ladybyrd · 13/09/2022 10:28

@Deguster The illustrations were bad enough, but for the love of god, make the poetry stop.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 10:40

I actually dreamed last night I was working in a Royal plate factory at a marketing meeting discussing whether we should include Paddington on the Coronation plates. I was arguing against it but King Charles was insisting that it was the right thing to do. On waking I'm 50:50 I can see both sides!

Deguster · 13/09/2022 11:20

So you prefer the illustrations @Ladybyrd eh? Perhaps you’d like to lash out a tenner on one of these beauties?

Ladybyrd · 13/09/2022 11:59

@Deguster Oh, that's classy.

It'd be a shame if they got into trouble for copyright infringement.

Honestly, it all makes me want to vomit. It was a lovely scene in the jubilee celebration. It would have been nice to leave it at that.

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 13/09/2022 12:55

Anyone remember the fabulous Stewart Lee sketch about the ET balloon amongst the Princess Diana flowers?

Eagerly awaiting his take on Paddington.

SillySausage21356 · 13/09/2022 13:18

Well I get what you mean to an extent.

However, I think you are being unreasonable to feel borderline offended this type of stuff

turningpurpleygreen · 13/09/2022 15:00

Yanbu

If i see another Paddington / Queen meme

🙄

turningpurpleygreen · 13/09/2022 15:02

I just feel like the majority if people love a good death. Its like they're enjoying it almost.

Saint tom
Philip
Queen

Any ole celeb who dies is suddenly a hero and somebody to obsess over

Why?

Deguster · 13/09/2022 15:47

Yep @turningpurpleygreen - competitive grief orgy. See also Diana. It’s very distasteful.

newnamethanks · 13/09/2022 16:04

Poems? Nooooo, stop it now. Maybe that's why we have a royal-appointed Poet Laureate, so we only have to hear one poem per occasion.

shockthemonkey · 13/09/2022 16:04

Is this one OK then?

newnamethanks · 13/09/2022 16:09

I'm assuming there will be a Del Boy flogging Paddington and HM t shirts to the funeral queue. Will he/she make a fortune or be lynched?

limitedperiodonly · 13/09/2022 16:11

@shockthemonkeyI find that one acceptable. Just my opinion.

BlueThingie · 13/09/2022 16:12

shockthemonkey · 13/09/2022 16:04

Is this one OK then?

At least this one has a connection to something the Queen actually liked. All these memes about Paddington- what’s wrong with horses, gin & Dubonnet and the Commonwealth?
