AIBU?

To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

Only on MN would there be a proper handbags-at-dawn argument over whether PB was psychopomp and/or a worthy custodian of the afterlife…. Keep it up fellow MN’ers, this is gold!

Also agree with whoever said King Charlie’s true colours showed over the ink pot incident - this is a man who allegedly insisted on his godgiven birthright to a mistress, needed an equerry to apply his toothpaste and demanded a range of eggs so he could select the one with the desired consistency.

On that basis alone, I’m enjoying the “King Cnut” memes way more than the cringe tastic PB ones.

I was just pointing it out to someone who was ignorant of the concept and seemed fretful that it was offensive. I'm helpful like that. .Obviously I have better things to do with my time but I'm not doing any of them right now. How about you?

Yarboosucks · 12/09/2022 22:44

Oh thank God! There are some people left who have not lost the plot!

Deguster · 12/09/2022 22:44

@limitedperiodonly I’m expressing appreciation, you silly moo! Im
supposed to be working, but this is way more entertaining…

PlanetNormal · 12/09/2022 22:44

I have a suggestion for people who are irritated by the mawkish tasteless drivel which is posted on Facebook by grief tourists and semi-literate halfwits. Stop using Facebook. Problem solved.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 12/09/2022 23:07

Isn’t there a song about Lady Marmalade?

And does anyone else desperately want to be in a Goth band called Psychopomp?

And is anyone here familiar with synchromysticism?

Paddington, harbinger of the afterlife……

Oh my days, no judgement but a whole lot of wide eyed wonderment…..

As Dirk Gently says …… “everything is connected……” ………

SD1978 · 12/09/2022 23:09

Twee and ridiculous. Based on one fecking comedy sketch, and naff all else. The rotting marmalade sandwiches are also ridiculous

Why is Paddington the grim reaper🤣

😂

anon666 · 12/09/2022 23:13

Secretly yes, but I put it in the same kind of category as those stupid smug "Be like Bill" memes.

Stuff I hate but don't want to upset any of my well meaning friends who have got poor judgement at times.

It's harmless enough if a little twee.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 12/09/2022 23:15

Luckily my youngest doesn't watch TV, he's autistic and I can just imagine what he'd think the whole Paddington memes , marmalade sandwiches and clipping for someone who's died

That's not a stealth boast BTW, he's too busy on bloody Minecraft and roblox

ImaginingDragons · 12/09/2022 19:39

The one I particularly dislike is her sitting on an Elizabeth Line train heading towards a bright light - is Shenfield the gateway to the afterlife now?

Superb, I haven't seen that one yet 😂😂😂

Wait until all the Queen/Paddington Christmas memorabilia

I saw some Paddington tree baubles in Next today.

I've got a great one for you poetry haters, shared on my local Facebook page:

Paddington sat down sadly
On a green and quiet glade
And pulled a sandwich from his little hat
Made With the nicest marmalade

He had heard sad news this very day
That the Queen's life had come to an end
He cried because that day they met
She had become his bestest friend

They had shared some tea
That very day when to the Palace he had been invited
He remembered he could hardly speak
He was so very very excited

He offered her his sandwich
Made with such love and care
She smiled at him and with a grin
She showed that little bear

That inside of her handbag
There was something she had made
And that She too kept a special sandwich
Made of the finest marmalade

Although he was just a little bear
And she a regal queen
Watching her take that sandwich out her bag
Was the best thing he had seen

He wondered if any body else would miss her
Now that she had gone
And his heart was filled up to the brim
When he turned his little phone on

He saw that Facebook had been flooded
With her pictures old and new
And that he himself that little bear
Was also in them too

Although today he is the saddest
That he has ever been
He will always lovingly remember
The day he had tea with the Queen

Oh wow. Just wow.

I don't resent this shite, but I do find it very cringe

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2022 23:18

I don't understand that one. Unless Paddington is also dead.

This is what I think. Paddington isn’t supposed to be dead. So it makes no sense.

sunglassesonthetable · 12/09/2022 22:09

Offended might be too strong but its certainly very weird.

I used to think the number severe mentally ill in this country was quite low, based on the number of high security MH units... but after the last few days, it may well be common.

There is no after life, Phillip has rotted away, QE2 is headed that way and a bear isn't taking her to anyone.

Even if you believe in a Christian God and heaven/hell, there is nothing in scripture to suggest a mythical bear is a harbinger of the undead.

God alive chill out. And stop making offensive comparisons between mental health and liking some PB memes.

Seriously?

Its not fuckin normal to think an imaginary bear is going to escort you to your life long love after your both dead... even more so, if you have zero connection to the two people in question.

I guess you put a bear and some sandwiches out?

Marvellousmadness · 12/09/2022 23:19

Oh give over
Just dont read them if you dislike them so much.

I want to crawl inside my own arse from the cringe . Although that's not the worst one I've seen

@Deguster Sorry and thanks. My sense of humour temporarily wafted off to a better place. But it's back now.

No idea. Get off FB if they're bothering you.

People on SM complaining about SM. It's a very small circle.

ChagSameachDoreen · 13/09/2022 07:00

They're dreadful.

They appeal to a mawkish streak in certain strata of British society - the same sort of bizarre collective mentality that's behind all the "armies" for sick children.

We need to get a fucking grip on ourselves. The monarchy is part of the system that is making the poor poorer.

ChagSameachDoreen · 13/09/2022 07:01

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 19:31

'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?'

I don't understand that one. Unless Paddington is also dead.

It's like he's been conferred the status of some latter-day Chiron or psychopomp, leading the dead into the next life. Utterly senseless.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2022 07:06

Oh God! The masses! Dreadful people who take package holidays and buy their jewellery from Argos. My cleaner's one of them. I never say anything though because she's terribly good.

😁

phishy · 13/09/2022 07:10

I wonder if the meme lovers realise Paddington was an illegal immigrant who came to Britain as a stowaway on a boat.

They did back-to-back war songs on VE Day - I hated Vera Lynn by the end of it.

My favourite tribute so far.

People off their box at 3.18am pay tributes to the queen at Buckingham Palace with a Lego Princess Leia

You've made my day! 😂

Also, further down the thread, there are some other great examples of awkward interviews. The danger of 24 hour news rolling cycle

Member869894 · 13/09/2022 07:15

It's mawkish as is most of the media coverage about the late Queen but hardly offensive.

lollipoprainbow · 13/09/2022 07:24

It was a strange sketch, could she see paddington it was it animatronics? Her face was quite bemused but I guess she was told to act like that. She did well.
