To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

Absolutely agree with you 100%. Twee and ridiculous. A lifetime of service and devotion to leave behind a legacy that is associated with a make believe bear by the masses.

God alive. Is that why there could be 5 miles of people waiting to walk silently by her coffin? Did you see the people doing that tonight?

Get of FB ffs. You're literally getting irate about memes.

Caravanheaven22 · 12/09/2022 21:39

You are so right. Making me rage.

vera99 · 12/09/2022 21:40

It's the Royalists and the advance of social media that will be their ultimate downfall , that and Harry and Meghan.

This is what I subconsciously see everytime I see the Paddington meme

Surely they are better than those with Death/Grim Reaper?

(like that one on Deviant Art with her meeting Death at ghostly Kings Cross, asking him to "hang on a minute", going over & giving Voldemort's maimed soul a good kicking and then saying "right now off we go" .. there are many more)

Queen had a wicked sense of humour & loved children, so not only shows humour but shows kids she wasn't alone.
I don't know.

charliee112 · 12/09/2022 21:49

I cannot stand that little bastard bear so I equally can't stand the memes with the queen!

Pikafuckingwho · 12/09/2022 21:51

To be honest it’s ruining Paddington for me. I much prefer him to any member of the Royal family. I can’t bear all the sycophancy and the cap doffing it’s making my toes curl. Charles true colours shone through when he hissed at the poor chap about the bloody ink pot.

Andrew piggy backing on the entire drama to try and get back in the public eye is the most nauseating.

I hope the Paddingtons get donated to children charities rather than end up in land fill.

Norriscolesbag · 12/09/2022 21:52

Some of the stuff on Facebook is so twee and cringe it’s unbelievable. It’s making me wonder about some of my friends who are sharing it to be honest, I didn’t realize some were so hard of thinking.

Horatioshelmet · 12/09/2022 21:55

Sorry #hun. 😂😂 was so 😂 that in the Fb group it was posted on that anyone saying anything derogatory about it (like “where is the apostrophe in that’s) was being vilified!

I loved the Queen and have been very said but a pissed up tattoo in Benidorm? Nope.

Oh God! The masses! Dreadful people who take package holidays and buy their jewellery from Argos. My cleaner's one of them. I never say anything though because she's terribly good.

I wonder if he (I think it's a bloke) went to Benidorm especially for the tattoo or he was on holiday and had a brainwave?Perhaps UK tattoo artists are refusing to do them. Grin

I'm loving the idea of Paddington as psychopomp, complete with marmalade sandwich in case you get hungry on the journey. That's the sort of transitional guide I can get behind, although I'd prefer a slice of pizza, if he's asking.

crymeout · 12/09/2022 22:03

@Bernadinetta I'm creased 😂

NotSonicTheHedgehog · 12/09/2022 22:04

Wait until all the Queen/Paddington Christmas memorabilia

Paddington isnt a toy, he is a fictitious character who can be anything you want it to be, it can be a bear leading you to the afterlife to meet your husband, it can be in toy form, there can be stories about him

Out of all the things you could be offended about, you're offended about some cartoons of a fictitious bear?

Offended might be too strong but its certainly very weird.

I used to think the number severe mentally ill in this country was quite low, based on the number of high security MH units... but after the last few days, it may well be common.

There is no after life, Phillip has rotted away, QE2 is headed that way and a bear isn't taking her to anyone.

Even if you believe in a Christian God and heaven/hell, there is nothing in scripture to suggest a mythical bear is a harbinger of the undead.

Jeremy Clarkson and his family must be rubbing their hands with glee

God alive chill out. And stop making offensive comparisons between mental health and liking some PB memes.

ScreamingBeans · 12/09/2022 22:09

It's beyond cringey. Embarrassingly naff. I've unfriended anyone who has posted it tbh, they're clearly idiots.

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 12/09/2022 22:12

‘borderline offensive’ give yer head a wobble op and get a bloody grip.

MakkaPakkas · 12/09/2022 19:34

Is Paddington dead!?!?

I don't think he's dead as such; more like a custodian of the afterlife. You know, sort of the boatman (boatbear) on the River Styx kind of thing.

But with flying corgis and bunting.

It's the stuff of nightmares really.

Tweetle · 12/09/2022 22:13

It's demeaning. It adds to the narrative that she's this old dear - she was THE fucking Queen!!!!

My rage is getting let out in this thread when it's more about the sexism - 'she reminds me of my nan or my grandmother or my old mum etc...'

Is anybody going to say that about the King? No. But a woman has to be someone's wife/daughter/sister/mum/nanna to actually matter.

Navigatingnewwaters · 12/09/2022 22:15

MakkaPakkas · 12/09/2022 19:34

Is Paddington dead!?!?

He’s apparently the Grim Reaper

Deguster · 12/09/2022 22:23

Only on MN would there be a proper handbags-at-dawn argument over whether PB was psychopomp and/or a worthy custodian of the afterlife…. Keep it up fellow MN’ers, this is gold!

Also agree with whoever said King Charlie’s true colours showed over the ink pot incident - this is a man who allegedly insisted on his godgiven birthright to a mistress, needed an equerry to apply his toothpaste and demanded a range of eggs so he could select the one with the desired consistency.

On that basis alone, I’m enjoying the “King Cnut” memes way more than the cringe tastic PB ones.

BeautifulWar · 12/09/2022 22:23

The crap memes and awful 'poetry' has driven me away from SM. It'll blow over but I find it an embarrassing insight in to grown adult's minds who think this is good!

TimandGinger · 12/09/2022 22:24

YANU. I honestly half expect the news to say that the Queen is most famous for the Paddington sketch. It’s so lowbrow.
