ok, am really not sure what the consensus will be here, so here goes...

dd goes to swimming lessons. there are about 35 children doing classes of different levels. the spectators' are is very hot and cramped. there is v little room for an adult to sit on the floor, and only about 25 seats.

last week, for some reason, there was a large number of siblings watching the lessons with their parents. many of these were occupying a seat. one mum had 2 sons with her. they took up 3 seat. also, a dad let his 2yo have a seat to herself.

meanwhile, i was struggling to keep tabs on my 3yo, while standing, as she edged close to the safety rail between us and poolside.

now, i know children are people too and should be treated with respect but do you think it was fair to allow children to occupy so many seats , in the circs?

Pipe and Hunker - surprised you had to ask tbh - see previous posts below, which make it clear what I'd do:

Only skimmed the thread, but tbh I'd rather my ds got to sit down than me (although he'd probably perch on my lap) - and I definitely would rather he had a seat than some random adult.

Quattro, your ds is making my point exactly imo - why should he move? Rather than you, for example, which achieves the same end result >>> little old lady gets a seat.

Just out of interest - has anyone changed their original views on whether children should vacate their seats for adults, or not, following this thread?

I'm just intrigued to see whether a MN discussion actually has any impact on emotive subjects such as this one....

Sonnet · 08/02/2008 13:39

I am old fashioned and have brought my DC's up to give up seats to adults. SO YANBU.

clam · 08/02/2008 13:44

Haven't changed my mind at all. In fact, was thinking about this post in town this morning when I was encouraging my son to hold open shop doors for others. Same principle to my mind..... along with apologising if you collide with someone, regardless whose fault it is. But think you may have re-opened a can of worms here.....

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 08/02/2008 20:08

I don't mean to open any worm cans or indeed respark the original 'argument' but I just wondered if people ever really do change their minds based on the views of others, or whether both sides just disagree with 'the other' and will not be shaken on it - hence discussion on MN being pointless. Well, you know what I mean!

SugarSkyHigh · 08/02/2008 20:23

have not read whole trhead. But i WOULD and DO certainly request my DC to give up seats when necessary..... and would HOPE others would do same.

but hey, i was 8 months pg and no one gave ME a seat on a bus, (no, not any healthy looking business man nor any strapping young woman) so my conclusion is that people are just BASTARDS

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 08/02/2008 21:05

This is not my thread btw!

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/02/2008 00:51

What does piss me off is people travelling in the rush hour with children, so you have about three under fives (who don't pay) lounging on three seats. Why can't one sit on the mother's lap and the other two share?

Mine give up seats.

"We were here first..." Isn't that what Hitler said when he invaded Poland?

Quattrocento · 09/02/2008 00:55

Have I changed my mind?

No, not at all.

Teachers instill selfishness in school children by suggesting they grab free Tube seats, regardless of elderly strapping hanging.
