£160 per month for the gym? Bonkers yes?

I’m keen to join our local gym so that I have something to get me out of the house over winter. I really want to use the spa. Our local exclusive ‘club’ is £160 per month for one adult. That’s for gym, indoor and outdoor pool and newly built ‘spa retreat’. Is this what people are paying these days? Am I totally out of touch- anyone paying this and think it’s worth it?
There was absolutely no budging on the price either.

I think it depends on how often you would realistically use it. That is on the expensive side but if you were going 5 or 6 times a week and got some enjoyment out of it then it is money we'll spent. If you think you'll only go once or twice a week then there will be better options.

Dragonskin · 09/09/2022 22:41

David Lloyd?

countdowntonap · 09/09/2022 22:44

I pay £150 for my gym and spa and feel it’s good value for money when I consider how much I use it.

OrigamiOwls · 09/09/2022 22:47

Wow that seems expensive! Gym with pool is £40 a month here, without a spa retreat tho. I guess it depends on how much you use it as to whether it is worth it to you.

Justsleep · 09/09/2022 22:48

Yes, bonkers. And imo a total rip off. Dh gyms 5 days a week in very well equipped and maintained gym with use of sauna, steam, pool etc and it’s between £40 and £45 a month, can’t quite recall the actual amount.

Hymnulop · 09/09/2022 22:49

I mean it sounds amazing so if you can afford it then go for it. I pay £45 per month for unlimited classes then £7 a time if I want to use the gym. Using the pool is around £4 a time but I'm not much of a swimmer. There is no spa bit.

DeliaDinglehopper · 09/09/2022 22:49

£30ish for a basic gym with a small pool. £160 sounds like a David Lloyd type place with proper spa facilities.

Applebark · 09/09/2022 22:49

That's about £5 per day. Every day.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/09/2022 22:50

I pay £55 for gym and pool. Would not pay any more

DecayedStrumpet · 09/09/2022 22:53

You can't really compare without an idea of location in the UK, that would probably be cheap for London!

Does it include fitness classes?

primeoflife · 09/09/2022 22:53

It's because everyone is showering and washing/drying their hair at gyms now

SocksAndTheCity · 09/09/2022 22:53

I think it sounds fine but then mine is £185.

It's still amazing value to me because I go so often, so I'm happy to pay it (although an outdoor pool would be even better Smile).

MrsFezziwig · 09/09/2022 22:53

My off peak membership of a council gym includes classes, gym, sauna, steam room and pools. £16 per month.

HollaHolla · 09/09/2022 22:54

I’m £53 a month for Bannatynes. Central Scotland. That’s a joint membership, though - so £106 in total. You can’t get that deal any more, so we’re hanging onto it!! I transferred the second person from my ex partner to my brother.

historygeek · 09/09/2022 22:55

There was a woman on here yesterday paying £700 a month so £160 seems comparitably reasonable.

HollaHolla · 09/09/2022 22:55

Should say mine includes gym, indoor pool/sauna/steam room/jacuzzi, and all classes, including online anytime ones. I there 3-4 times a week, so feel it’s worth it for the classes.

Lemons1571 · 09/09/2022 22:55

£88 pcm here - south central England for a gym pool and spa facilities. All classes included. It’s lovely.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 09/09/2022 22:57

If its David Lloyd don't do it. I used to belong there .... never again.

I pay £160 for 4 of us now and i much prefer it to the top end one we used to belong. And we still have a sauna/ steam room/ jacuzzi.

abovedecknotbelow · 09/09/2022 23:02

Do you want indoor outdoor pool gym and spa retreat though? Are they giving you access to other DL's. You can get the price down for what you will actually use.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/09/2022 23:07

Considering I know plenty of people who spend at least £5-£10 a day on lunches and coffees at work, it’s really pretty reasonable if you’re planning on using it several days a week and will make use of all the facilities. But there are budget gyms like Puregym and The Gym all over the place starting at about £25 a month if you think you’d only go once a week and do basic stuff. I pay £490 a month, but I go at least five times a week and it includes three hours a week with my fab PTs, plus I can’t put a price on having good health and looking fab.

Notlosinganyweight · 09/09/2022 23:09

Sounds like David Llyod to me. It depends what you use. If you are there pretty much everyday then might be worth it.

I pay about 30 just for gym. It is less for council gym and I'd get pool and sauna, but I'd have to pay to park, which doesn't make it cheap at all. I use it x2 a week as that is all I have time for, but I'm glad of those two sessions.

I would shop around as there are pretty good gyms out there for less.

Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent · 09/09/2022 23:10

160 x 12 is £1920 per annum. Let’s assume you’ll go 100 times - a couple of times a week over 50 weeks, which smooths out any time away for holidays, illness, working away, other commitments etc. That makes it £19.20 for every trip, maybe more if you need to pay for parking.

To me, that sounds a lot just to get out of the house. Are there any decent council ones within reach? Actually even an adequate one will probably cost a quarter of that.

karalimed · 09/09/2022 23:10

Well it depends what you want out of it.

I used to pay £30 for Pure Gym, now I pay £120. The £120 gym is less busy, has better classes and facilities, has windows(!) meaning that I actually enjoy going and go more often.

I hated every minute spent at the £30 gym, I feel calm and relaxed at the £120 gym, so it's worth it to me.

Dreikanter · 09/09/2022 23:10

Depends what the “spa” bit includes. And how much would you use the outdoor pool? (I’d be more interested in how big the indoor pool is).

Our local council outsourced gym and swim with exercises classes and sauna is £30 per month. £50 with spa but I’ve no idea what the “spa” bit covers. Pool is 6 lane 33m so good for proper swimming (but don’t get me started on lane discipline).

Aroundthetwist · 09/09/2022 23:11

I pay this for David Lloyd in Farnham (a little more in fact) and have been a member for a year.

I like the club, I go to another close by too, but I can take or leave the spa - it was a novelty at first, but there is always something broken and the demographic was a bit different to what I was expecting.

The tennis courts are nice and the gym and pool too, the spa part can be bought as a day pass once in a while if you like - I’ll probably do that if I renew.
