£160 per month for the gym? Bonkers yes?

I’m keen to join our local gym so that I have something to get me out of the house over winter. I really want to use the spa. Our local exclusive ‘club’ is £160 per month for one adult. That’s for gym, indoor and outdoor pool and newly built ‘spa retreat’. Is this what people are paying these days? Am I totally out of touch- anyone paying this and think it’s worth it?
There was absolutely no budging on the price either.

I'm £27 pcm for Glasgow Club (Council run gym), access to classes in approx 20 locations, access to multiple pools and gym. It's a bloody bargain and I hope nobody running it reads this thread!

I don't know if I am the riffraff 😁, but everyone is friendly, and I love it.

If its David Lloyd don't do it. I used to belong there .... never again.

I pay £160 for 4 of us now and i much prefer it to the top end one we used to belong. And we still have a sauna/ steam room/ jacuzzi.

Interested I am a DL member

....why?

Macbeth8 · 10/09/2022 02:05

I pay 195.
Actually regretting joining the 12 montj contract
.was on a tempoary one before.
It includes kids though
And yes David Lloyds
Interested in the negative comments about David Lloyds can someone enlighten me?

ivykaty44 · 10/09/2022 02:22

its an investment in your health & fitness so if you’re going to use it 3/4 x a week then why would it Be bonkers

people spend £400 a month on lease hire cars when they could by a car outright to do the same job.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/09/2022 02:24

I pay £65 a month for my David Lloyd membership which is the off-peak old farts' rate. It includes gym and indoor/outdoor pools (outdoor one is heated to same temperature as indoor and open all year round) and classes. But not the 'Spa Retreat' area which looks lovely but would take it over the hundred mark.
It's a nice place, the pools are good, it's clean and well kept but not very friendly.

Discwriter · 10/09/2022 02:54

I used to be with DL. Around £250 for all of us, off peak - 2 adults and 2 children. It was way too much, and yes, agree with PP saying people were not very friendly. We're at Bannatynes now, all classes, swimming, sauna etc for £120 for all of us again. Much better value for money and I absolutely love going. And they tell you the price upfront!

There was a woman on here yesterday paying £700 a month so £160 seems comparitably reasonable.

Ha ha. I thought of that too.

Whether £160 is reasonable depends on whether it fits into your budget and how much you use it. Plus what else is available locally in terms of facilities etc.

If you don't have a lot of spare money and/or rarely go, it's probably a waste of money.

But if you go several times a week, can comfortably afford it from your disposable income, and it's suitably located so you do go, and there isn't a similar or closer gym available significantly cheaper, then it's not hugely unreasonable.

Plus it's likely that gyms are going to get more expensive, due to the cost of their heating water for showers, pools, jacuzzis etc. So it might be that, if you sign up at this rate, in a year or two's time, it looks quite good value.

Miacarla · 10/09/2022 04:21

Mine is £65 a month for gym, classes, steam room etc, pool and 4 hours free secure parking per visit. I often go and see a film at the cinema upstairs after my swim 😂. I'd love an outdoor pool though.

Anon778833 · 10/09/2022 04:42

I was just going to say this must be David Lloyd!

Nat6999 · 10/09/2022 04:47

I paid £55a month 20 years ago for Virgin Gym in Sheffield

SierraSapphire · 10/09/2022 06:20

I used to pay £95 / month for a David Lloyd with an outdoor pool but no spa. I loved it, it felt luxurious, and would also spend lots of time working in the cafe (self-employed), and the outdoor swimming made it worth it for me. It's a completely different experience from my current gym where I go, do the exercise and leave to shower at home. I only left because my working patterns changed though Covid and it was too far away for me. Really depends what you want from a gym. If it's just to exercise and leave, probably not worth it. If it's somewhere you go to relax for longer, possibly with friends and family, then maybe.

itsgettingweird · 10/09/2022 06:26

I pay £32 for gym, pool, sauna etc and classes.

It's corporate and £37 full price.

Seems a lot to me but if it's a spa retreat and you use it every weekend (and can easily afford it) then it'll end up good value.

garlictwist · 10/09/2022 06:35

That's insane! I just googled joining my local gym this week. It's 30 quid a month and I decided that's too much. I will just go jogging and cycling as I do now for free!

Shoxfordian · 10/09/2022 06:37

I used to pay 160 for David Lloyd and it had a spa but there were a few things I didn’t like so much - they often let kids in the pool when it was meant to be adults only and the spa was often noisy with people on their phones - I know nobody is likely to be taking a photo of me with who let the whale in but I don’t like the idea that they could be 🙄🤣

I cancelled my membership earlier this year because I didn’t go enough to justify it although it was nice being able to take a friend to the spa and I did like having the option

Day20 · 10/09/2022 06:51

You must have a cheaper gym than that OP. What does "Spa" facilities consists of?

A spa along a gym obviously is a fancy gym. It's all relative but personally £160 is way abouve my budget.

pompomdaisy · 10/09/2022 06:53

I paid £16 a month but was hardly going so cancelled it. If you can afford £160 then fine. If you can't it's silly.

PileofLogs · 10/09/2022 06:54

I’ve been a member of a club like this and it was lovely- spa, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, sauna etc etc. I went almost every day and used lots of the facilities- definitely worth it for me in that context.

It doesn’t seem a crazy price if that’s what’s on offer, so the question is whether it’s actually what you want. If you just need a basic gym, you’d be hugely over-paying.

Magenta82 · 10/09/2022 06:57

When I was a David Lloyd member I was going probably 6 days a week. I was single and would probably do at least 10 classes a week plus use the gym a few times, have a PT session at least once a week and use the spa whenever I could.

I feel like I got good value for money, but I was single and didn't really do much else, I wouldn't have a membership now because I have a baby, a partner and a house to renovate.

FrankGrillosFloof · 10/09/2022 06:58

I pay more than that but the gym is pretty much my life. I’ve made loads of friends there who I meet socially and holiday with.

It’s a lot of money but it’s relative to your income and what you get out of it.

Startuplife · 10/09/2022 06:59

I’m about to start paying £129 for David Lloyd and having seen the facilities I think it’s worth it.
I’m mainly into doing classes and used to pay an obscene amount in central London for similar style classes to their Blaze class.
Being able to spend the day by the outdoor pool in the summer sold it to me if I’m honest.
But then before we moved I was paying £45 a month to our local Better leisure centre and the quality of the classes was extremely poor so I feel that was bad value in comparison.

Nevertouchakoala · 09/09/2022 23:16

It’s for your health so money well spent that’s one dinner out I guess so maybe have one dinner out less a month

Oh how the other half live 😵😭.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2022 23:38

Council gym £34.99 per month. Can use all gyms in the local authority and swimming pools. Go 5 days a weekl

I have a similar deal but it's £28 per month as 'buddy rate' as my husband is already a member.

emmathedilemma · 10/09/2022 07:11

Ouch! My “health club” - small gym, 25m pool, sauna and steam room, tennis courts available in summer, and classes is £78 although I don’t pay full price as I do it through work. I pretty much only use the gym so I’m considering moving as I’d be cheaper going to pure gym and paying for an occasional swim at the “council” pool.

Subeccoo · 10/09/2022 07:13

I pay 29 for pool, steam, sauna, classes and gym.
I realise this is ridiculously cheap and I'm dreading the day they replace it with the new one they've got in planning but hope they honour previous members!

Subeccoo · 10/09/2022 07:14

I use it every single day so works out at les than a quid a go for me 😅
