I’m keen to join our local gym so that I have something to get me out of the house over winter. I really want to use the spa. Our local exclusive ‘club’ is £160 per month for one adult. That’s for gym, indoor and outdoor pool and newly built ‘spa retreat’. Is this what people are paying these days? Am I totally out of touch- anyone paying this and think it’s worth it?
There was absolutely no budging on the price either.

I'm not remotely ashamed to say a large part of the reason I'm happy to pay is the difference in demographic.

Clearly

You can't really compare without an idea of location in the UK, that would probably be cheap for London!

Does it include fitness classes?

It wouldn’t!!! I pay £29 a month for a brilliant gym in Shoreditch thats open 24/7, spotlessly clean and has great facilities.

£19.99 a month for JD Gyms, I go 4-5 times a week so it's a bargain.

Some of these prices are horrendous! To be honest, I'd pay for for the gym to be 5 mins away than for luxurious facilities. You just won't go if you have to drive half an hour to get there.

Well that's part of what I pay for as my gym is less than five minutes walk from my flat! I go at least once a day and usually twice - sometimes I even nip over at lunchtime and get a yoga class in too just for a change of scene and I shower there more than I do at home (they have a water conditioner which is a lot better for washing my hair than central London tap water).

I could go cheaper, but the classes are second to none, the pool/sauna/steam room are lovely as are the showers and changing rooms including the towels and toiletries, the gym equipment is top notch and the place is also spotlessly clean and tidy - I would be massively shooting myself in the foot if I binned it off as I just wouldn't go as much.

I pay £30 a month and this is to use any of their gyms, swimming, spa facilities and use their classes. I'm in central Scotland so I guess it is area dependant. There are some real nice gyms my way for less but don't have pools or spas 😊

ZenNudist · 10/09/2022 16:26

Guess you are in am rich area

I pay £30 for council pool and gym / classes.

This is a major positive when it comes to gyms, especially if you’re a woman. For example, I do rack weights. I used to be a Pure Gym member before I started earning really well and could afford better, and at the average budget gym there is no limit on members, there will be maybe two or three racks, and these will be hogged for most of the day by shitty gym bros who a) rarely let women get a look in and b) stare at them the whole time if they do manage to get a turn. Whereas at my gym there are twelve racks shared among fewer members, and frankly the standard of member is just better, everyone is respectful of each other, and I get to do my sets without feeling like meat at a zoo. I suspect the reason many women eschew exercising in gyms is being made to feel uncomfortable.

Riffraff?

my DL is full of rough types and the tennis coach has recently been sacked for drug dealing in the car park

love DL, but yeah the “riffraff” is there too 😁

just a slightly posher riffraff

Member of golf club spa facilities are small pool, sauna, steam room , jacuzzi, gym and classes £78:00 . Which when you go is excellent value.. ( although not been for two months , so not quite as good value).

iwanttoholdyourhand · 10/09/2022 23:27

Im also a member of DL as is my husband and 2 children we pay around £370 per month. I think it's great value and we go at least 3 times per week and daily during school holidays. There is an amazing spa, kids clubs, soft play, outdoor pool etc. I also work there too in their business hub while the kids are having their sessions.

I thinks it's good value. I have made some lovely friends there too my children absolutely love it too.

FirewomanSam · 11/09/2022 08:10

I pay around that for my David Lloyd membership and it’s the best money I spend each month. I play tennis and do the Blaze classes which make it feel better value for money (similar Bootcamp-type classes like Barry’s in Central London are £20 a pop) and I absolutely LOVE the spa retreat. Mine doesn’t have an outdoor pool but there are other clubs nearby which do, so I go to those when I fancy an outdoor swim. I have made use of other clubs when travelling for work too and it’s so nice to have that option.

It’s incredibly expensive but for me it’s worth it. I work from home and can be incredibly isolated in my role so I love having somewhere else to go and I love how friendly the place is. I always seem to get chatting to someone and swapping numbers to play tennis together or whatever. They have spaces where you can work too, so sometimes I take my laptop there for a change of scene. It’s definitely a ‘club’ rather than just a gym so it really depends if that’s what you’re looking for. If I just wanted to use a treadmill and some weights after work a couple of times a week then I wouldn’t bother with a DL, there are much cheaper options out there.
