£160 per month for the gym? Bonkers yes?

I’m keen to join our local gym so that I have something to get me out of the house over winter. I really want to use the spa. Our local exclusive ‘club’ is £160 per month for one adult. That’s for gym, indoor and outdoor pool and newly built ‘spa retreat’. Is this what people are paying these days? Am I totally out of touch- anyone paying this and think it’s worth it?
There was absolutely no budging on the price either.

DL is a wannabee country club. I'd do the odd 3 month membership for outdoor pool and spa facilities but don't tie yourself into their 12 mo th contract. It's also hard to get out of.

It's nice but it's often busy. I prefer my £35 pm gym with a hotel like pool, steam room and jacuzzi.

DL is also full of drug dealers vs the middle class in my area 😂

Lalliella · 10/09/2022 08:35

Do you not have any other gyms around? We have loads in our town now.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/09/2022 08:36

One of our local DLs has the top of the range spa. My friend joined as she lives in walking distance.
If I understood her correctly, you can join without spa membership which is cheaper. The spa is amazing, I've been as a guest (you have to payback£25 as a guest for the spa ). Depends whether you think you'd use the spa regularly enough but it is fab.

Don't know if the outdoor pool is part of the regular gym package or the spa add on but that would swing it for me. Appreciate British weather means you can't use it all the time but I was lucky the day I went and we spent the afternoon by the pool in the sun, felt like iI'd had a little holiday.

Their gym equipment is far superior to many gyms too .

So yes it's a lot if money, but you get a lot more than I get at my gym. It depends whether you think you would use all the facilities and have time to make the most of it. I live too far away to think I'd use it enough for fitness stuff and there is the additions time/fuel costs so a non-starter for me.

SamPoodle123 · 10/09/2022 08:43

It depends, you can find gyms that cost less for sure. But to give you an example, we pay 500 for our gym monthly. This includes two adults and one child. And we get a deal as joining as a couple!! Crazy, but it is the closest gym and well used by our family. Esp when weather gets bad.

rookiemere · 10/09/2022 08:43

It depends how much you're going to use it, and what bits you intend to use.

I have DL membership at £90 a month which I'm in the process of cancelling. I love the outdoor pool but now I'm back in the office a couple of times a week I only use it once plus one class. My friend goes most days and works there, so for her it's worth the cost.

Upwiththelark76 · 10/09/2022 08:47

Pure Gym £20 a month or JD £22. No pool though but very well equipped gyms and access to classes .

If money is no object then go for it . Personally I think it’s a crazy price .

Itsokay2020 · 10/09/2022 08:58

I pay £51 a month for Bannatynes, I use it at least five times a week for classes, gym and occasionally the pool. I really like it, only a short drive away and it’s clean etc

There are rumours of a DL being built within the same distance, and I am tempted so it has been interesting to read some of the comments

i do think you get what you pay for - I have always paid around the £50 mark, the demographic always seems a little older. I avoid the ‘muscle’ gyms as I get irked by the excessive grunting and slamming of weights 🤣

lljkk · 10/09/2022 09:02

Most gyms do daypasses. I'd budget £160/month for daypasses (£12-£20/day?) & for a few months, see how much I actually went, to decide if I want to go more often. For instance, if daypass is £20, you need to go > 8x/month (>2x / week when you aren't on holiday) to get your money's worth with a membership.

HandbagsnGladrags · 10/09/2022 09:04

Do they have a corporate discount you could take advantage of? If you pay a year up front is it cheaper?

Mine is £930 per year for similar facilities but works out at less than £5 per month based 7 usage. Will you get enough use out of it to justify the cost?

Gigia · 10/09/2022 09:05

I pay £54 for Virgin Active, gym, pool, unlimited classes, anytime access, sauna and steam room so it seems very expensive to me

BertieQueen · 10/09/2022 09:08

David Lloyds? Stay well away. Was a member for 6 years and honestly it was not worth it.

The one i use to go to is all over my local social media due to having an on going problem with drain worms they are not dealing with correctly, many people have been ill recently from swimming there. Cleaning issues have always been a big problem throughout the whole centre.

Classes were always fully booked, kids clubs were very poor, staff were rude and unhelpful. Honestly have a very long list of negatives.

One major problem was the lockers in the changing room were always being broken into at least once a week. We had things taken that couldn’t be replaced. David Lloyd also wouldn’t pay out.

Also took money out of my bank account for someone else’s membership.

Couldn’t pay me to be a member again.

BaileySharp · 10/09/2022 09:13

At that price I'd have to be going daily I think and using the spa and everything! It's too much for me but if you can afford it and think you'd make use of it why not I suppose

Chesneyhawkes1 · 10/09/2022 09:14

I used to be a member of David Lloyd. Was expensive but I loved it. Only left when I moved away.

If they opened one near me I'd join the same day!

queenofthewild · 10/09/2022 09:17

Depends if classes are included.

Lots of dance or yoga classes are £10 a session where I live. Joining a gym ended up being a cheaper way for me to do classes then it felt like the pool was an extra free bonus.

If you're not going to go most days it's not worth it though.

crossstitchingnana · 10/09/2022 09:24

I pay £34 a month for swimming, sauna, jacuzzi, classes, squash, badminton and gym. It's a council leisure centre.

Inklingpot · 10/09/2022 09:31

Comparing private gyms with council ones purely on a cost basis is pointless because they are too different.

I used to belong to a council one which was £52 per month. Classes, swimming and any racquets were extra money, and the pool was in a different location anyway. If you went every day, your monthly cost would easily exceed £150.

There is no council gym where I live now, the nearest council pool is several miles away and there are only adult sessions about 3-4 times a week outside working hours.

Paying £130 for classes, facilities, swimming, gym floor and racquets under one roof doesn’t seem particularly extortionate to me.

I agree - I was just saying my council gym is cheap because I only really want to do spin so it suits me well and that if I did want all the other things then yes I would pay a lot more.

OneTC · 10/09/2022 09:50

I don't go to the gym but to me that seems like crazy money unless you're going to get at least 4 x a week out of it. The spa/pool/sauna aren't really of interest but the gym bit could be but I can't imagine myself wanting to pay more than 30/m to use some machines

I climb. I get unlimited access for 55/m. I have to go 5 times in a month to make it more economical than a single admission, but I normally go 3 x a week. It has a pretty good gym attached that you don't pay extra for

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/09/2022 09:53

I work at a leisure centre. It has a 33m pool, a smaller pool, a sauna and steam room, a large gym, squash courts, a sports hall for badminton, football etc., a spin room and a dance studio with lots of fitness classss if all types. oh and good coffee. It is a big tatty but everything is included except swimming lesson. £75/month.

Greengagesnfennel · 10/09/2022 10:01

It's nowhere near what I am paying these days.
£30.50 pm for use of 5 gyms in different locations and 2 swimming pools. (One 50m). The gyms are massive well maintained multi room things and you get 2 free personal trainer sessions to set your training plan. After that it is extra to get 1:1. Sauna but no spa. NW. Classes would be a higher monthly fee (I think maybe nearer £40-45pm) but I don't do them.

Darbs76 · 10/09/2022 10:03

Absolute no way I’d pay that. Even £40 I’d consider expensive. Especially as most people don’t even use them after the initial month

Which DL is this?

MrsJBaptiste · 10/09/2022 14:47

£19.99 a month for JD Gyms, I go 4-5 times a week so it's a bargain.

Some of these prices are horrendous! To be honest, I'd pay for for the gym to be 5 mins away than for luxurious facilities. You just won't go if you have to drive half an hour to get there.

NerrSnerr · 10/09/2022 14:52

We pay a lot for the 4 of us to use David Lloyd. It's less than an mile from our house and we use it most days. I do classes 4-5 times a week, swim with the children 1-2 times a week, husband swims alone 7 days a week and the kids do the kids classes 2-3 days a week. It's worth it if you can use it.

£75 for something 'a bit tatty' takes the piss IMO. I'll stick to my £90 fee and have elemis products, a nice cafe and no riff raff. I'm not remotely ashamed to say a large part of the reason I'm happy to pay is the difference in demographic.
