£160 per month for the gym? Bonkers yes?

I’m keen to join our local gym so that I have something to get me out of the house over winter. I really want to use the spa. Our local exclusive ‘club’ is £160 per month for one adult. That’s for gym, indoor and outdoor pool and newly built ‘spa retreat’. Is this what people are paying these days? Am I totally out of touch- anyone paying this and think it’s worth it?
There was absolutely no budging on the price either.

Some posh gyms will charge that to keep the riff raff out. They only want clients who can comfortably afford to pay that amount. And there are clearly enough to keep them in business!

Decidualcast · 09/09/2022 23:12

I agree - depends how often you will use the facilities and price relative to your income. I’d do a trial. I took a membership to a very posh member’s club in London, which had the most fabulous gym and classes, and luxurious changing facilities. I soon got bored. I pay 80 a month for unlimited classes at my yoga studio. It’s the best money I spend every month as I go daily and it leaves me feeling great.

That's how much my friend pays for her gym. She said so that she can find herself a wealthy husband 🤷🏽‍♀️

StrangerThanMostFiction · 09/09/2022 23:15

Wow, really?! That's a horrifying amount. I'm on a break as I've had to economise, but my gym is £40 off peak, £60 any hours. Gym, pool, some classes, steam room, sauna and whirlpool.

Nevertouchakoala · 09/09/2022 23:16

It’s for your health so money well spent that’s one dinner out I guess so maybe have one dinner out less a month

BigBearLittleBear · 09/09/2022 23:18

I used to pay £76 per month for one with a gym, two pools and few other things. I wasn’t getting value for money and was paying over the odds for pools that I didn’t use. I now pay £25 per month for a small independent one. It’s no frills but has what I need.

One dinner out? £160?!

washingbasketqueen · 09/09/2022 23:20

I pay £24 per month. /4 hour gym, includes all classes. No pool or spa but I wouldn't use one anyway (unless I was at a lovely spa retreat).

DareDevil223 · 09/09/2022 23:29

I pay £150 a month for unlimited gym and classes and four PT sessions a month which is now seeming like very good value.

womaninatightspot · 09/09/2022 23:30

I've started paying 21 quid for council gym / pool. I plan on showering there loads to cut down oil bill at home.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2022 23:38

Council gym £34.99 per month. Can use all gyms in the local authority and swimming pools. Go 5 days a weekl

Itstarts · 09/09/2022 23:43

£40 pcm peak time including all classes/pool and children's swim. £1 pp to take the kids to the soft play inside too. Free physical training service. SE London. Only £10 extra to use any of the brand gyms in the country, including a localish one with trampoline park for the kids.

mondaytosunday · 09/09/2022 23:44

Yes my friend just stopped hers it's £250 for a couple! They did use it several times a week but she felt it was an expense too far these days.

mondaytosunday · 09/09/2022 23:44

Not exclusive just a chain (but London).

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/09/2022 23:47

And there's me thinking of pushing the boat out for £80 a month instead of £20 because I want access to a pool at least twice a week - to travel to the nearest public pool would cost £3.30 plus £4.95 each time (and I'd have to bugger off within 35 minutes most nights because of bloody swimming clubs).

I suppose if you can afford it easily and don't mind the lock in contracts, it's a choice where others might opt for nights in the pub for a similar cost. But I don't think I'd spend that much unless I had oodles of money.

Greyarea12 · 09/09/2022 23:53

Oh my god!! There's no way I would pay that much per month. I pay £25 a month for the use of gym, fitness classes, pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room plus my dds swim lessons and any childrens sports classea. That membership can be used in all of their 6 locations in and around the area in which I live.

TinySaltLick · 10/09/2022 00:03

Everyone will be here providing comparison points, but the price reflects the luxuriousness, the location, the staff, the exclusivity. Of course even in central London you can go to pure gym for 30 a month - it's just what you value the other dimensions. 160 isn't crazy for a health club with all the extras in Central London, but if you are going once a week to use a treadmill then it's absurd pricing - where do you sit on the spectrum

Seraphinesupport · 10/09/2022 00:08

Waaay too much! My local is a gym, 3 pools including outdoor, spa and saunas for £40 a month broze or £60 gold membership and that's a nice hotel

almondflake · 10/09/2022 00:10

I pay £44 a month at Nuffield gym for classes 7days a week , full pool facilities, sauna ,hot tub , steam room and all gym equipment ,free weights etc and Wi-Fi ,there's a Costa on site too and now a new spa . With it being a chain I can use any in the country too . I must admit after seeing all your membership prices it's not too bad for what I get

MrsFezziwig · 10/09/2022 00:14

For my £16 a month I get a clean environment, and decent choice of classes and equipment. Not luxurious but I don’t care about that, not interested in any sort of social interaction beyond the bare minimum, I live really close so don’t use the showers etc.

The obvious disadvantage is that because it’s so cheap I have zero incentive to make myself go because I’d be wasting money if I didn’t.

CampervanKween · 10/09/2022 00:24

Cheadle David Lloyd? I mean, the spa is lovely ngl.

MissDollyMix · 10/09/2022 00:31

I pay £80 a month but that’s a discounted rate and it’s part of a couples discount too so DH has to pay £80 too. It’s a lot of money but it a a nice clean, quiet gym with two pools, sauna etc and lots of classes to choose from. I look forward to going, it’s my happy place and for us it’s worth the financial sacrifice. That’s what it boils down to, if you can afford it, is it value for money for you?

RJnomore1 · 10/09/2022 00:32

I pay £20 to the council gym but I just want to go knock my pan in at spin and up the road.

If I was got hanging about swimming and spa using I’d be looking for something different. We don’t have a David Lloyd for miles though.

MarshaMelrose · 10/09/2022 00:43

I pay £490 a month,

Yikes. That's £6,000 a year. You could have your own gym built for that.

Binkybix · 10/09/2022 01:50

Outdoor pools are lovely, but it is a lot. I’d consider it if the location was good if I had enough time to make regular use of it
