Websites not changing their banners to black.

What are your thoughts on websites changing their colours to black and white in response to the Queen's death?

I'm not an ardent royalist, but I think it's a nice touch in amongst this significant event.

I've noticed some websites haven't and in a way I find it disrespectful. The Guardian hasn't bothered to do this, which isn't a surprise. But AIBU to think showing a little unity in this time wouldn't be amiss? Mumsnet hasn't done it either.

In chrome, open the developer tools. Use the inspect tool to select the part of the page which would be more respectful if it were black. On the right the panel will show all the styling classes which were used to render the page. Pick the colours you find disrespectful and replace them with #000000.

There you go, you’ll feel better very quickly.

Now, can I please get back to mourning ?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/09/2022 00:18

I think it's meaningless performative bullshit. These companies don't really care they are just changing their headers so they aren't the ones who haven't. It makes not a jot of difference. I think the whole concept of national mourning is unnecessary. I respect the late Queen for her service to the nation but I don't think changing a website colour really says anything meaningful.

Metrette · 10/09/2022 00:20

It’s easier with some content management systems than others.

i really wouldn’t get my knickers in a twist about it.

Especially digging at the Guardian which has done very respectful coverage.

certain newspapers with black banners have been far less respectful

Thanks. This is mostly what I was trying to open a discussion about - the fact that some relatively obscure websites have done it but some of the more mainstream ones haven't.

I noticed last night that some Premier League football clubs had changed their colours on Twitter, so I think I expected it to be more widespread today.

But apparently I need to get a life, according to people commenting on mumsnet on a Friday night.

The more mainstream, the more users / customers you could potentially impact by making a change that is unnecessary to the actual function of the website. It's a risk assessment. If the people running the website think that the change could break an actual function of the website, they have to calculate whether not making a cosmetic change that may upset a few people is worse than being unable to inform / trade at all.

The grief pice can just piss off as far as I'm concerned.

starfishmummy · 10/09/2022 00:31

Not bothered either way

Iv not liked to see the websites who haven't just simply done the banner.

Its actually made me think less of those businesses.

I'd rather give my money to a local British business pays a fair and proportionate amount of UK tax that contributes to the UK public services (which incidentally helps to fund the Royal family) but can't afford to pay their web designer to change their website colours.

Whereas Amazon aggressively avoid paying UK tax and contribute a disproportionately small percentage to the UK public services (and therefore the royal family) and drives UK businesses to bankruptcy but are somehow better because it can afford to virtue signal by slapping up a trite "condolences" notice on a black banner.
Because Amazon are definitely bothered about the death of a monarch that they don't even like making a financial contribution to.

Panpastels · 10/09/2022 01:07

Ffs I will glad when we are back to just moaning about fuel bills.

Stompythedinosaur · 10/09/2022 01:31

Changing the colour on a website achieves about as much as declaring your support for the Ukraine on your Facebook profile picture.

It is a gesture to make the person doing it feel better. It isn't about anyone else.

It isn't disrespectful not to do it.

TokidokiBarbie · 10/09/2022 01:37

It's a nice gesture but I hate when people try and force/police these things. Misses the point.

Like all the doorstep pot bashers during covid. One neighbour (who sits on her fat arse all day) knocked on my door to say she'd seen the lights on and wondered why I wasn't out there clapping. I'd just got back from a 13hr shift so she got pretty short shrift.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/09/2022 01:39

There's a brilliant thread on Twitter where people are posting shots from websites which are virtue signalling, putting tributes to the Queen which are either cringy or totally inappropriate. Anne Summers did a very tasteful one, photo of the Queen with "Thank you, your Majesty" which is fine except that ots on the Home Page where there are also adverts for explicit lingerie and vibrators. The Lego website has a lego model of the Queen which looks like an alien crossed with a frog.

NovaDeltas · 10/09/2022 02:51

It's a load of bollocks and I have lost any respect for brands that did it. Like all public grieving, it's a way of making someone's death all about you.

DdraigGoch · 10/09/2022 02:58

When the Duke of Edinburgh died, the National Rail Enquiries website went full greyscale. It was painful to look at, and attracted many complaints from the visually impaired. So if done, it should be limited to just a black banner or logo.

sjxoxo · 10/09/2022 03:13

Didn’t even notice this was a thing! I couldn’t give a monkeys about colour of website. We’ll get another thread shortly by someone saying they can’t tell if it’s their real banks website or a scam 😂

Should we all be wearing black, painting our front doors black & living with our curtains closed for 6 weeks?? Hope you already are op 😂 come on!! It’s 2022

Draughtycatflapreturns · 10/09/2022 03:20

I think the internet should be turned off so that we can all go outside and do a big “grief conga” up and down the country.

Pilipalapal · 10/09/2022 03:33

Fucking hell 😂

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/09/2022 04:08

Oh do fuck off... It's a massive ball ache on my site, loads of work as I'd have to change the pissing text colours as well!

No.

Pilipalapal · 10/09/2022 05:01

You could download a monochrome extension for your web browser, then every site will appear reassuringly respectful.

StoneofDestiny · 10/09/2022 05:20

Utter nonsense - seriously, we aren't North Korea!

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 10/09/2022 06:15

Ahf22 · 09/09/2022 22:59

do you all claim it’s virtue signalling when companies put rainbow banners and logos up during (never-ending) pride “month”?

Yes, of course it is.

hellcatspangle · 10/09/2022 06:21

Couldn't care less.

Daisycrown · 10/09/2022 06:44

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 10/09/2022 00:01

The same businesses who haven't changed to the black banner are probably the same ones that change it for things like BLM.

Hmm how so? Please elaborate.....

changingstages · 10/09/2022 06:53

Couldn't give a flying fuck

gogohmm · 10/09/2022 06:54

Why? Plus ever thought they may not have their website person in! Yes I've been struggling to attempt to edit mine from my holiday ... only I know how to do it (small place)
