What are your thoughts on websites changing their colours to black and white in response to the Queen's death?

I'm not an ardent royalist, but I think it's a nice touch in amongst this significant event.

I've noticed some websites haven't and in a way I find it disrespectful. The Guardian hasn't bothered to do this, which isn't a surprise. But AIBU to think showing a little unity in this time wouldn't be amiss? Mumsnet hasn't done it either.

I'm slightly bemused by the number of companies with a condolences banner on their website. Bathroom suppliers, garden centre, national tyres? Of course once some start doing it every one else does. It feels like a totally empty gesture. Do most people care if Dobbies are remembering HRH?

PooWeeBum · 09/09/2022 22:07

I have an elderly family member receiving end of live care, I didn’t appreciate trying to order a Chinese tonight and Deliveroo having a big banner reminding me of death, in fact I cried

Namenic · 09/09/2022 22:10

I’m pro royal and I don’t think companies should necessarily do this.

Applebark · 09/09/2022 22:11

The way that Ann Summers did?

Rachie1973 · 09/09/2022 22:12

Bet you comment on people not wearing poppies too.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/09/2022 22:12

I’m as monarchist as they come but I couldn’t even begin to care about this.

allinatizzy · 09/09/2022 22:13

We should probably keep a list of the offenders and put a hex on them or something. If hexes are a step too far, ask them on Twitter, FB, etc. why they're not falling into line.

Gingerkittykat · 09/09/2022 22:13

You will be happy to know that Anne Summers has changed their website as a mark of respect.

I can maybe see wanting websites to change their websites on the day of the funeral as a mark of respect since it is officially a day of national mourning but otherwise I am already sick of all the black banners and tributes.

Have you not got any actual problems to worry about?

Even if you don’t personally there are many far more pressing concerns at the national and international level than the colour of website banners.

RiftGibbon · 09/09/2022 22:14

People on Facebook have done it too. Ridiculous .

Madeintowerhamlets · 09/09/2022 22:15

What’s wrong with the Guardian?

PinkBuffalo · 09/09/2022 21:39

Our work has changed the intranet to all blacked out videos apart from a picture of the queen and all blacked out round the edges
it just looks like a really bad connection i thought there was something wrong with the internet when I logged on
It makes it really hard to look at

There are genuine accessibility issues around changing a website to black and white or greyscale. It can make it really hard for some people to read / navigate

Twopandemicpregnancies · 09/09/2022 22:17

On a related note, I am totally sick of my inbox being full of statements about the Queen by companies. I don’t need my contact lens provider to tell me how devastated they are by her passing. Because some companies have done it now they all are and it’s just ridiculous

Like when they put flags on their faces and other ridiculousness

Sickoffamilydrama · 09/09/2022 22:29

You'll be pleased to know I've just done our social media OP but then our business is linked to the funeral industry. I

I'm not sure Anne summers needs to!

alwaysdarkestbeforedawn · 09/09/2022 22:30

The Guardian have greyed out the banners surrounding their headlines/stories. The live updates were red yesterday.

I think it’s a nice mark of respect but I wouldn’t think any less of companies who don’t do it.

I don't care.
It is virtue signalling.

So much this

TheNestedIf · 09/09/2022 22:36

It's not necessarily that companies can't be bothered. These things look like a simple change to the user, but it's not always the case behind the scenes. It depends how a website has been designed to serve its primary function, or whether it has been constructed at speed with less focus on future-proofing, or whether the people who know where all the knotty bits of code are are still involved.

johnd2 · 09/09/2022 22:37

If the guardian wanted to change the blue banner at the top then the whole colour palette would need updating and checking for colour contrast etc. It's not something you can just do at short notice as it involves too many variables.
The website banner isn't really changed for anything, the colours of the story cards are predesigned and attached depending on the tone and tag.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/09/2022 22:46

Unless a website immediately linked to the Queen I’d likely immediately exit any website which has changed it’s logo to black. It’s no loss to me or anybody I have spoken to in real life, I know a few people who are upset the footballs be cancelled but that’s the extent of it. There’s no need for websites to ‘honour’ a woman who was just doing her job, just like the rest of us do when we leave the house, because she lived to the privileged aged of 96. It would be different if she’d died young but she was older than most of us will ever get.

Thistleinthenight · 09/09/2022 22:51

Oh yawn. People have lost the plot. Yes it's sad when such a large figure has died, but get a bit of a grip.

Ahf22 · 09/09/2022 22:59

do you all claim it’s virtue signalling when companies put rainbow banners and logos up during (never-ending) pride “month”?

fivehundred · 09/09/2022 23:01

(1) Open browser console on any website (ctrl + shift + i)
(2) Type in document.querySelectorAll("*").forEach(el => el.style.setProperty("background-color", "black"))
(3) Instant mourning

You're welcome
