I know it's not reasonable to kill a robin but wtf do I do?

I have a robin who thinks it lives in my house. If I open any of the windows at all, it flies in and then (if I am in, which I am a lot because I wfh) it panics and flies around shitting everywhere. I am so so so over it. What do I do? I love fresh air and like having my windows, but it just comes straight in and I keep finding bird poo all over the place and I have a one and a three year old and I don't want crap all over the place. This morning, I caught it and chucked it out - and I actually just want to kill it now. I know it sounds silly, but I hate having random bird poo everywhere (it stains the carpets, it's GROSS). Is there anyway of humanely convincing it that it doesn't live here? (Yes, I've googled and I know about the fact that it's a sign of approaching death, which doesn't improve my mood.)

Robins are super territorial- I would buy one of those Christmas Decoration ones, glue it to a board and put it somewhere he likes to go.
Hopefully, he will spend his time fighting that and ignoring your house.

@MyNoseIsCold @PlumPudd
Thanks for the giggles! Brilliant. :-)

Have you recently committed any awful crimes in Gotham City?

It may be trying to prove to Batman that it can bring you to justice all by itself.

Octagoneaway · 09/09/2022 11:39

When an over aggressive blue tit was attacking my lounge window to fight itself, I tied on a plastic bag and the fluttering of the bag was enough to discourage the bird from coming near. Could you try something similar?

lapasion · 09/09/2022 11:45

Find out whose dead nanna it is and return it to them in time for Christmas.

RobertsRadio · 09/09/2022 11:51

I'm so jealous Op, maybe not of the shit, but I love Robins. I would definitely try the feeding station idea.

Caroffee · 09/09/2022 11:52

Don't open your windows widely, narrow the gap so the robin can't get in.

DameHelena · 09/09/2022 11:56

FFS don't take it out of its territory!
Just get some flyscreens. Cheap ones from Amazon will do. What a fuss.

Popaholic · 09/09/2022 11:59

My mum always said she would come back as a robin. Are you sure it is not the reincarnation of a dearly departed?

or is there a rich vein of witchcraft in your family history (maybe it is a familiar…)?

assuming not … put a window feeder full of tasty mealworms and robin food on a different window. It will go there instead of your open window.

gamerchick · 09/09/2022 12:00

For Christ's sake put some fly screens up and open your windows all you want. This is a simple fix and it doesn't cost a fortune.

CoastalWave · 09/09/2022 12:02

I'm afraid I'd just have to buy one of these and be done with it! Pet robin here we go!

Pet sparrowhawk?

The bastard sparrowhawk murdered the tame Dove that used to visit us.

RIP Dave, gone but not forgotten 🕊️

MarsupiIami · 09/09/2022 12:05

Start putting mealworms (wilko sell them at a reasonable price) somewhere further away from your house. Your neighbours' window?

Wouldloveanother · 09/09/2022 12:05

Borrow a cat, let the robin fly into the living room and see it. The cat will go berserk trying to catch it for a bit, but shouldn’t be able to. You can then release the robin and I bet it won’t come back.

most interesting thread ive read for a while on here!

Tierne · 09/09/2022 12:07

You cant kill it, cage it or release it far from home.

That means you have to accept it.

You need to set boundaries with the robin.

Why dont you create a fun bird playground outside your window?

MenaiMna · 09/09/2022 12:07

We have these on all our windows, they are very easy to customise and install overcthe opening section of the window. Window cleaner can pull them off to get their work done. Ex: easy-flyscreens dot co dot uk other suppliers are available like the Range, the large evil south American river conglomerate, even jml

1Dandelion1 · 09/09/2022 12:07

Look up the magnetic fly screens on Amazon, they are cheap and easy to install and take down. In the summer they are god send as they keep mozzies out and the autumn they keep the spinders out.

AdamRyan · 09/09/2022 12:08

I'd suggest opening the window to a room with an easy clean floor and then shutting the door so it can only get into that room. Hopefully once it's checked out that bit of its territory it will leave for the day and it won't be shitting all over the house

Kennykenkencat · 09/09/2022 12:09

I know it's not reasonable to kill a robin

Not reasonable and not legal

Put up fly screens and CDs hung from a string and reduce any possibility of it thinking that it’s reflection is another bird in the house.

Robins are territorial and it was probably waiting for you to get home from your holiday to confront the bird it saw in the window.

Also I think you would have to drive it a few hundred miles to keep it from coming back into your garden

Sunnyqueen · 09/09/2022 12:09

Quite strange you'd rather kill it than just put a fly screen up that loads of people use and is very cheap and easily available.

Breakfastisjustporridge · 09/09/2022 12:14

I normally just tell spiders they are ok to live here as long as I don't see them, it works.
Try nicely asking the robin to stop coming into your house.

DrEmilleShofhousen · 09/09/2022 12:15

“Fun bird playground” 🤣🤣🤣

Vecnasnurse · 09/09/2022 12:16

I'll lend you my python to drape over the window. He's a fast little bugger and would probably enjoy a tasty robin.

DrEmilleShofhousen · 09/09/2022 12:16

Can you put a cat cuddly toy on the window ledge inside, facing out?

Shannith · 09/09/2022 12:17

Definitely have a go with playing male Robin sounds.

Here

And some cds in the windows. Birds of prey shapes www.google.co.uk/search?q=sparrow+hawk+silhouette&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#imgrc=-rrKI05SJ7RYfM&imgdii=VWGxIm5sbTTmGM

Or play the sound of sparrohawk hunting cries.

Pretty much clears the field of birds when they are up hunting.
