Time to abolish the BBC?

The queen has died - fine; express sypmathy for the family etc - but I do not need to be told the same news and potted history of her live on repeat 24/7 - on every single radio station.
Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.
But if anyone can reccomend a decent UK tald radion station that is not obsessed with tellilng me that the queen has died 100 times an hour, much appreciated.

Inappropriate - our Queen has just died! Have some respect!

Dotcheck · 09/09/2022 06:58

For heavens sake, it’s news. It’s BIG news- of course it will be on rotation. Remember covid? Cost of living crisis? It is what they do. If you want to listen to something else, try Spotify

Monday55 · 09/09/2022 06:59

You can flick through the radio channels until you find one that's not reporting about the Queen's passing?

autumnleaves17 · 09/09/2022 07:00

I can recommend a good book 😊

heldinadream · 09/09/2022 07:00

The BBC does incredible and amazing work reporting and reflecting society all over the world, it's one of the few institutions that has truly global significance.

It'll be a very sad day if it's ever abolished, but I suspect it's robust enough to outlive your nonsense.

Bretonbear · 09/09/2022 07:02

I agree OP but streaming is now your friend.

Welshrarebitontoast · 09/09/2022 07:04

Netflix
Disney
Paramount
Amazon
Now TV

Library

Charity shop book section

All viable options if you can not live with a historical even being shown as it happens on the BBC.

As is the off switch.

sashagabadon · 09/09/2022 07:04

I live the BBC. Think they are doing an excellent job. I will dip in and out as I have a busy job. I guess if you usually watch daytime tv all day then yes it might get a bit repetitive!

Verbena1 · 09/09/2022 07:05

Absolutely no need to listen to BBC if you don’t want to, the choice is there. The BBC is duty bound to reflect important national news.

Numbat2022 · 09/09/2022 07:06

No, the BBC does not need to be abolished for reporting incredibly important news. Yes it is a bit much, but we all knew this would happen - I've been expecting the wall-to-wall coverage all my adult life.

Don't you have a digital radio? There are so many other stations, I'm sure you'll find one that isn't talking about it (although maybe not today...)

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 09/09/2022 07:06

Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.

There are absolutely loads of non-bbc radio stations though.

Sunnyqueen · 09/09/2022 07:07

Except its not just the BBC at all by any stretch. Its all that's showing on itv last night and this morning as well as all over capital radios.

Iheartmykyndle · 09/09/2022 07:09

Cbeebies is on as normal, maybe you could watch that.

Mrsjayy · 09/09/2022 07:10

There is radio stations other than the BBC maybe use the time to broaden your horizons you are being ridiculous but you probably know that.

tigger1001 · 09/09/2022 07:10

It will be like this for days.

There is just no need for the blanket coverage for days on end.

Netflix/streaming is your friend

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 09/09/2022 07:11

Don’t you have a playlist on Spotify you can listen to?

Amrapaali · 09/09/2022 07:11

Yes abolished. But not for covering the queens death. That's a one in a generation event and yea does need to be covered. But most of it is vacuous shite anyway. Just filling up airtime with anecdotes and ephemera.

But generally the BBC is really not fit for purpose. Especially as a news organisation. Reporters and correspondents chipping in with their own opinion on world events. Shocking the first time I heard it

Shitzngiggles · 09/09/2022 07:11

We have so much choice these days with regards to TV and radio so there will be plenty of other channels to choose from if you're not interested in the coverage of a very important event. So don't understand why you can't just find one of those.

EarringsandLipstick · 09/09/2022 07:11

I disagree. This is a historical moment and has worldwide significance.

In Ireland, where views on the monarchy are to say the least, mixed, our flagship morning news programme began an hour earlier at 6 and is fully focused on the Queen's death. Obviously there won't be the same level of coverage but it's treated as significant.

I think it's exactly the BBC's remit to do this, and if people don't want to watch the coverage, they don't have to.

Kazziek · 09/09/2022 07:14

If you want to abolish the BBC for the coverage, you'll also need to abolish ITV, C4, C5, Sky, CNN, etc, etc. Including the sports channels!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/09/2022 07:15

Love the bbc, turn over OP

LookItsMeAgain · 09/09/2022 07:16

This is part of the protocol that was agreed years ago. It's generally accepted that when a head of state passes away, the media outlets in that country will do blanket coverage of the mourning and funeral etc.

That is all that is happening here.

If you don't like the BBC doing what they are obliged to do (I think it's even written into the terms & conditions that they have their broadcast license), you are free to select Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ or any other service provider to watch what it is you are missing.

It's not every day that a monarch who has reigned for 70+ years passes away. This is history and you're complaining that they are doing their job???

I give up!!!

PuppyMonkey · 09/09/2022 07:18

I’m no royalist but even I don’t begrudge just leaving them all to it for these next 10 days of mourning or whatever it is. There are plenty of podcasts out there you could listen to instead.

CecilyP · 09/09/2022 07:19

If you’d flicked through the main channels, you’d have noticed they were all the same except those that just showed a blank screen. This has been synchronised and had been planned for years.
