I would say
Dishwasher
Sky tv

OP posts:
LT2 · 09/09/2022 09:30

Sky TV (We cancelled it this year as hardly ever used it)
A second car. Haven't needed it as we've always worked at the same place so far. Has saved us a lot!
Alexa
Ring doorbell
A lot of what has already been said - fake nails, eyelashes etc.
Tumble dryer
A shed
Ipads

worldeater · 09/09/2022 09:37

A BBC licence.

Dishwashersaurous · 09/09/2022 09:37

Games console
Football shirts

TheVanguardSix · 09/09/2022 09:37

Car
tumble dryer
tablet/iPad
ring doorbell
nothing ‘smart’ like lighting/heating/tv/meter
(I’m a low app dependency person)

And my choices are actually based on the reality that I don’t need these things. That said, I have lots of things I don’t need that I really enjoy like my dishwasher, my bike, my toaster. 😁
I have a Eufy. I like my Eufy. Very much.

AllThatAndMore · 09/09/2022 09:40

Microwave! We have a lovely big kitchen with plenty of space but I would rather heat up my food by stove/oven . Most people think I’m crazy but it’s my preference 🤷‍♀️

Lullabies2Paralyze · 09/09/2022 09:41

My parents don’t own a TV….much to my embarrassment as a child (and I’d get annoyed by family members jokingly asking if I’d asked for a telly for Christmas)

I think it’s more common now as people don’t want to pay tv licence and more people just watch Netflix etc. but back in 90’s and early 2000’s when I was a child/teenager it was quite mortifying. Didn’t even want to bring friends home when I was a teen as there was no music channels or Disney channel to watch lol.

aurynne · 09/09/2022 09:46

A watch
A large TV
Netflix
Makeup
Any facial/body health products (creams, lotions, etc)
Hair straighteners
Tumble dryer
Children

Blinky21 · 09/09/2022 09:50

Alexa, we were given one years ago but it's still in the box, games console, food processor

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 10:11

People always seem surprised but you can just toast bread under the grill

We have just had a new kitchen installed, and the grill is in the (electric) oven. It takes so long to warm up to grill anything that it would use far more energy to make toast under the grill than in a toaster. And you have to stay next to it to keep an eye on it. I would not want to be without a toaster.

I cook from scratch, but still wouldn’t be without a microwave. It is often used to reheat hot drinks because we haven’t drunk them quickly enough. I also use it to make porridge, reheat food (a bit difficult to reheat a slice of lasagne in a pan and far more energy efficient than heating the oven just for a piece of lasagne), melt butter or chocolate for baking, sterilising dishcloths and washing up sponges and a myriad of other things.

I wear a watch because I don’t always have my phone on me or want to get it out to see the time.

@jewishmum what do you use instead of toilet roll?

Sparklingbrook · 09/09/2022 10:16

Not a 'surprise' really as that's how we did it in the olden days. Things moved on and we got toasters that are more economical and quicker.
You can boil your water for tea in a saucepan if you like, but kettles are better.

mam0918 · 09/09/2022 10:19

Probably lots of things, Im a touch technophobic and dont see the point of a lot of modern gadgets.

If it wasnt for family forcing stuff on me I wouldnt have a smart tv or smart phone etc...

I still have all my records, CD, VHS etc... I just think everything use to last better and be less complicated to set up, understand and learn.

Maybe Im old before my time but I dont have space in my brain to learn all this shit.

I cut outgrown clothes into squares and have a big stack of them, I wet them with water and mild soap and use as toilet wipes. This is only possible for me as I already cloth diaper and have a free onsite laundry.

I know what you mean. I have a house full of vinyl/cassettes/CDs but nothing to play them on.

So I bit the bullet and got Spotify and an Alexa (very simple) and now I can listen to anything I want in seconds. No scratches on the record or CDs, nothing to wear out. And I have one giant mixtape which I can subject any of my car passengers to. Grin

you’re in the US then?

do you have “diaper” services like you see on tv where they come pick up a bag, wash and dry it, and return it to you? I can see how that would facilitate reusables.

o/t but I’ve just had to google the origin of the word diaper. It’s such a strange word 😂

ItsyourSam · 09/09/2022 10:33

I grew up without a tv too. My parents used to say it was full of rubbish and life was better without one! I didn't agree then but I do now. My children have also grown up without tv.

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/09/2022 10:34

airpods or similar. Surely you just lose them?

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 10:37

We grew up without a TV, and hated it when I went to school on Monday and everyone was talking about the latest Dr Who episode.

I don't agree that TV is completely full of rubbish. It does show a lot of rubbish, but it still has a lot to offer. We don't watch TV, we watch specific programmes on TV.

Reallyreallyborednow · 09/09/2022 10:40

no you can track them. Make them beep so you can find them.

love mine. I have pro’s and the noise cancelling function is invaluable 😂😂😂

TeenDivided · 09/09/2022 10:56

Like so many on here:
Dishwasher
Tumbledrier
Subscription TV
Alexa
Ring doorbell

Also, and this may be more unusual, downloadable music.

Getoff · 09/09/2022 11:14

Why wouldn't you want a dishwasher?

I actually inherited a dishwasher with my kitchen, but it hasn't been used for more than twenty years. If I could find another use for the space it occupies, I would replace it with something else.

It takes me literally a few minutes to wash up in the sink. I think it would actually take longer to load and unload a dishwasher, but that may be unreasonable, as I've never actually tested that theory.

Say I'm cooking for two, that means two plates, a large frying pan and a pot. Maybe one oven dish. At most five items. On average about one minute to wash each under a running tap. (Cutlery is about five seconds per item, so little time it's not even worth adding to the estimate.)

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 11:23

Interestingly, on another thread, the OP asked what is necessary in a self catering one bedroom holiday let. And the vast majority said they wouldn't consider anywhere without a dishwasher.

Reallyreallyborednow · 09/09/2022 11:25

I am 50 and have done without a dishwasher until now. My new house has one.

life changing. Biggest is my hands are less painful, dry and cracked. Second is it takes far less time, I run the dishwasher once a day, or every other day. Everything sits in the dishwasher until it’s washed and is then put away. No drying dishes hanging around, damp tea towels drying, no doing batches of washing up after cooking or baking as I don’t have room. Also much cheaper to run and doesn’t use all my hot water.

my mum doesn’t see the need for a dishwasher and it’s a massive difference when she visits. We use three times the hot water, she washes up five or six times a day, there’s always pots cluttering up the sink.
